The Development And Evaluation Of Nurse-Created Video Modules To Encourage Healthy Behaviors Among Women With Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (Pcos), Rebecca Akers
Doctoral Projects
Problem Statement: Women with PCOS have a higher prevalence of overweight and obesity, a problem that is directly linked with many of the symptoms and long-term health problems experienced by these individuals. Research studies indicate that lifestyle modifications, including dietary changes and increased physical activity aimed at promoting weight loss, are often the initial approach to treatment, but many women fail to adopt those health-promoting behaviors, which may be due to insufficient teaching and support provided by healthcare professionals.
Purpose: Utilize Pender’s Health Promotion Model to develop and evaluate a set of educational video modules focused on encouraging women with …
Use Of Behavior Management Training To Improve Nurses' Confidence In Managing Patient Aggression, Chasity Long
Use Of Behavior Management Training To Improve Nurses' Confidence In Managing Patient Aggression, Chasity Long
Doctoral Projects
Workplace aggression and violence toward healthcare workers are documented extensively throughout the literature and unfortunately, this behavior has increased during the COVID-19 pandemic. Challenges brought on by the pandemic, such as visitor restrictions and short staffing, have only exacerbated patient aggression and violence. Workplace aggression and violence can cause not only psychological or physical injury to nurses and nursing staff, but it also impacts patient care, job satisfaction, absenteeism, and nurse retention. Training programs to improve nurses’ assessment skills to predict aggressive behaviors and de-escalate violent situations can help nurses better predict and manage patient aggression. A behavior management training …
Promoting The Adoption Of Double Gloving Among Nurse Anesthetists: An Educational Intervention Based On The Theory Of Planned Behavior, Nguyet Tran
Doctoral Projects
Abstract
Background: The role of anesthetists in the transmission of pathogenic and non-pathogenic organisms from their work station to the patient has been well established in research. The proposed study aims to test the efficacy of an educational intervention in promoting double gloving in an effort to minimize the risk of cross-contamination.
Methods: This pilot study explored if multi-component educational intervention facilitates the adoption of double gloving and the prevention of cross-contamination in the anesthesia workstation. Student Registered Nurse Anesthetists (SRNAs) and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) were followed in three evaluation phases; the first test was done before the …
Promoting Positive Sexual Health Behaviors Among Rural College Students: Results Of A Targeted Sti Prevention Program, Julie Loyke
Promoting Positive Sexual Health Behaviors Among Rural College Students: Results Of A Targeted Sti Prevention Program, Julie Loyke
Doctoral Projects
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are a significant public health concern, with 26 million new cases diagnosed annually in the U.S. Emerging adults aged 18 to 25 years, which are included in the age group of Americans who have the highest rates for the three most common STIs: chlamydia, gonorrhea, and HPV (cdc.gov., 2020). Unfortunately, there is a paucity of research on the effects of STI education interventions on the attitudes and knowledge regarding STIs in this age group, especially in rural youth. While STI rates are high among adolescents and young adults nationally, rural youth have different behavioral risk factors …
Supporting Adoption Of Atraumatic Care By Rural Hospital Nursing Staff Through Education, Angie Sowers
Supporting Adoption Of Atraumatic Care By Rural Hospital Nursing Staff Through Education, Angie Sowers
Doctoral Projects
Problem Statement: While atraumatic care is often practiced in children's specialty hospitals, it is less likely to be a part of the care provided in rural hospitals (Li et al., 2018). Nurses in this setting may not feel equipped or supported to provide atraumatic care.
Purpose: The purpose of this DNP Project is to support increased knowledge and utilization of atraumatic care by nursing staff providing care for pediatric patients in rural community hospital through a professional development education program. Methods: An educational program development project was created, implemented, and evaluated to support the utilization, awareness, and knowledge of atraumatic …
A Nurse Led Heart Failure Education For Self-Care Symptom Monitoring And Management, Lynda Browning
A Nurse Led Heart Failure Education For Self-Care Symptom Monitoring And Management, Lynda Browning
Doctoral Projects
Title
Nurse-led education heart failure education for symptom monitoring and management
Abstract
Problem Statement: Over six million adults in the United States have heart failure (CDC.gov,2020). According to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), almost 20% of heart failure patients hospitalized are readmitted under 30 days (AHRQ, 2013). The American Heart Association (AHA) (2022) recommends a visual symptom tracking tool for self-care symptom monitoring to increase patient adherence and reduce readmissions. Despite this recommendation, the AHA tool for symptom monitoring is not fully incorporated into the discharge of every heart failure patient often because of nursing management …
Creating Rural Nurse Retention Strategies For Nursing Administrators, Susan Lesser
Creating Rural Nurse Retention Strategies For Nursing Administrators, Susan Lesser
Doctoral Projects
Rural area nurse retention has been referred to as a crisis for decades; this crisis has been exacerbated by several factors including the COVID-19 pandemic, resources being directed towards larger hospitals, the inability to recruit and retain healthcare providers to rural areas, and the aging workforce (Rossetter, 2020). The researcher in this Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Project investigated the elements that encourage rural nurse retention and sought to develop retention strategies that are rooted in the literature and anchored in the concerns of rural nurses. Retention strategy recommendations were drawn from results from the Revised Casey Fink Nurse Retention …
Ontrack: A Program Evaluation, Justin Mynatt
Ontrack: A Program Evaluation, Justin Mynatt
Doctoral Projects
OnTrack is a program that provides coordinated specialty care (CSC) services for patients who have experienced their first episode of psychosis (FEP). Appropriately identifying and aggressively treating this vulnerable population, while providing support to both them and their families is critical for improved outcomes. Appropriate treatment of FEP patients can improve their quality of life, preserve brain matter, improve overall functioning, and lessen the burden of the clients’ family who may be involved in their care, such as caregiver strain or financial hardship. The purpose of this project is to evaluate the success of OnTrack, a FEP program, at improving …

Political Astuteness In Tn Nurse Practitioners: Strategies To Inform, Tracie Gooch, Tracie Herrell
Doctoral Projects
Abstract
Political astuteness among nurse practitioners practicing in states like Tennessee where their scope of practice is restricted needs evaluation to promote policy and scope of practice change to increase access to quality healthcare in rural and underserved areas to decrease healthcare disparities in vulnerable populations. There is a scant amount of literature that specifically addresses political astuteness in nurse practitioners. The purpose of this project is to assess and provide strategies to inform nurse practitioners on political astuteness and activity. A cross sectional survey included the administration of an online version of the Political Astuteness Inventory (PAI), compared results …
An Evaluation Of Implementing Enhanced Recovery After Surgery Protocol Throughout The Perioperative Phase: A Quality Improvement Initiative To Enhance Patient Outcomes After Colorectal Surgery, Jerica Hill Dnp
Doctoral Projects
Abstract: The Enhanced Recovery After Surgery protocol (ERAS) is a multimodal collaborative approach implemented throughout the perioperative phase to enhance patient outcomes. The key mechanism for effectiveness in the ERAS protocol is the attenuation of the surgical stress response combined with treatments that support the return of functions that delay recovery in traditional methods. The purpose of this scholarly project was to evaluate the results of the ERAS Pilot program currently initiated at Baptist Memorial Hospital to improve patient outcomes undergoing major abdominal surgery. Prior to the implementation of the ERAS protocol there was no standardized method in place at …
Effectiveness Of An Open Access Scheduling System In A Community Mental Health Center, Callie Crockett
Effectiveness Of An Open Access Scheduling System In A Community Mental Health Center, Callie Crockett
Doctoral Projects
Abstract
Open Access Schedule (OAS) systems are a new way to schedule patient appointment in an outpatient medical setting. In theory these systems will provide many benefits that are not seen in a traditional scheduling model, such as decreased wait times to see a provider and more provider flexibility. However, little research has been done to examine how effective these systems are once they are put into practice, particularly in the mental health setting. The purpose of this project was to examine a recently implemented open access scheduling system in a community mental health center in rural Northeast Tennessee and …
