Practicing Leadership Skills Through Peer Mentoring And Teaching: The Lived Experience Of Bsn Students, Alicia Bright
Practicing Leadership Skills Through Peer Mentoring And Teaching: The Lived Experience Of Bsn Students, Alicia Bright
Nursing | Faculty Scholarship
Although leadership theory is introduced in baccalaureate nursing curriculum, opportunities to practice and develop leadership skills are limited for undergraduate nursing students. This study explores the experience of advanced nursing students who provided mentoring and tutoring to beginning nursing students. The experiences they describe are interpreted in light of literature on leadership education in undergraduate nursing schools, as well as that of peer mentoring and peer teaching. These advanced students described opportunities to practice and reflect on leadership skills and attributes. Peer mentoring and peer teaching programs may be an effective and efficient way of helping nursing students gain leadership …
Nursing Campus Therapy Dog, Deborah A. Hall
Nursing Campus Therapy Dog, Deborah A. Hall
Nursing Theses and Dissertations
An acknowledged bond has existed between humans and animals throughout history. Therapeutic physical and psycho-social effects of these bonding relationships have been noted in health care settings. Professional nursing education is known to be one of the most demanding and stressful fields of study. Students begin to experience extreme stress early in their nursing education. An animal-assisted intervention with a therapy dog is an innovative and inexpensive action that can help decrease the stress, anxiety, and depression students experience in higher education.
The focus of this dissertation portfolio was an animal-assisted intervention with a nursing campus therapy dog. The initial …

Jack Mezirow’s transformative learning theory provides a framework in which to explore learning experiences that facilitate the Registered Practical Nurses (RPN) who returns to school to upgrade their credentials to that of a Registered Nurse (RN). It is through self-exploration and critically reflection upon previous nursing knowledge that RPNs can begin to enhance their knowledge and transform their practice. Mezirow claims there are precursor steps that adult learners contemplate as they engage in the process of perspective transformation which is initiated by disorientating dilemmas. RPNs who return to school to upgrade their credentials to that of an RN need to …

Quality Advancement in Nursing Education - Avancées en formation infirmière
Global Health is widely being adopted by universities and higher education institutions in Canada and around the world. The current global climate has given rise to an emphasis on the necessity of global health education for nurses. Nursing educators as well as nursing students are seeking guidance as they integrate global health as part of their learning, teaching, research and practice. In September 2015, the member states of the United Nations adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): seventeen goals to end poverty, protect the environment, and ensure health and well-being for all. These seventeen goals will guide the world’s development …

Background
Simulation usage has proliferated throughout nursing education. Although nursing programs have sought integration of simulation to substitute traditional clinical learning hours, the variability of regulations between states raises questions about consistency of learner outcomes.
Methods
The Boards of Nursing (BONs) of the United States and the District of Columbia were queried by internet, phone, and email to discover regulations and guidelines for the use of simulation in nursing education.
Results
More than half of the BONs reported regulations for simulation use, but they varied greatly. Some had regulations defining a percentage of traditional clinical hours that could be replaced …

The Relationship Between Nursing-Faculty Incivility And New-Graduate-Nurse Self-Confidence During Transition To Practice: A Correlational Study, Martha Kershaw
CUP Ed.D. Dissertations
Decreased self-confidence is seen in nursing students who experience nursing-faculty-to-nursing-student-incivility and in new-graduate-nurses during their transition to practice. Using a quantitative correlational design, I examined the relationship between nursing-faculty-to-nursing-student incivility and new-graduate-nurse self-confidence including the extent to which the relationship exists and whether the relationship existed for some groups more than others, specifically male and female nurses, and nurses who graduated from associate’s degree and Bachelor of Science programs. Through the surveys completed by 212 registered nurses who had been practicing less than three years, the participants reported on their experience with nursing-faculty-to-nursing-student incivility using the Perceived Faculty Incivility Scale …

Standardized nursing education can help equip nurses with appropriate skills needed to care for certain patient populations. Pediatric neurofibromatosis type-1 (NF1) patients have unique health needs, and often seek care at institutions where no NF1 training has been provided. The purpose of this project was to explore existing nursing NF1 knowledge and knowledge perception in a pediatric oncology infusion center within a large bay area children’s hospital, a location where nurses have varied NF1 education and have recently been asked to care for this population. Malcolm Knowles’ adult learning theory was used to design an NF1 educational tool for nurses. …
Assessing The Long-Term Effects Of A Cultural Immersion Experience On Nursing Practice, Karen H. De La Cruz
Assessing The Long-Term Effects Of A Cultural Immersion Experience On Nursing Practice, Karen H. De La Cruz
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Cultural immersion has been identified as a preferred method of teaching cultural competence in undergraduate nursing education. Multiple qualitative and quantitative studies have shown that baccalaureate nursing students enjoy international learning experiences and, based on self-efficacy evaluations, feel they have increased cultural competency following immersion experiences. However, there is little evidence to indicate concepts learned during undergraduate cultural competency course work is retained or integrated into nursing practice after leaving the milieu of academia.
To inform future cultural competency educational efforts, I conducted a qualitative phenomenological study to provide a baseline of evidence regarding the impact of a cultural immersion …
Prevalence And Use Of High-Fidelity Simulation In Family Nurse Practitioner Programs, Christina Rosa Pendrak Pepin
Prevalence And Use Of High-Fidelity Simulation In Family Nurse Practitioner Programs, Christina Rosa Pendrak Pepin
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Family nurse practitioner (FNP) programs represent almost 60% of all accredited primary-care NP programs in the U.S. in 2015. Increased enrollments and creation of new NP programs has led to a shortage of appropriate clinical sites and the increased competition for quality clinical sites. FNP programs have turned towards utilizing innovative ways to address this shortage including the use of high-fidelity simulation. However, a lack of literature supports substituting traditional clinical hours with high-fidelity simulation. Only 45 articles were found over a 35-year period describing the use of high-fidelity simulation in an FNP program and of those published since 2014, …

Interventions For Promoting Earlier Enrollment Into Hospice And Palliative Care Among Patients With A Terminal Illness, Jody K. Kampa
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Background: Although research supports palliative care (PC) to improve symptoms and quality of life for patients with terminal illnesses, these services are underutilized. While 80% of people prefer to die at home, the majority still die in an acute care facility, sometimes receiving aggressive interventions that may increase suffering up until the very end of life. Earlier referral to PC or hospice care can improve symptom management and facilitate end-of-life (EOL) wishes. Purpose: The purpose of this critical review of literature was to identify barriers as well as evidenced-based interventions to promote earlier enrollment into hospice and PC among patients …

Developing Staff Education Regarding Colorectal Cancer Screening Practice Guidelines, Ruth Airiohuomo Aboiralor
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Colorectal rectal cancer (CRC) is the 3rd most common cancer in men, the 2nd most common cancer in women, and the 4th leading cause of cancer death. Lack of screening or delayed screening for CRC is the major cause of undiagnosed cancers that become malignant and eventually become fatal. Nurses at the project site are not in compliance with CRC screening guidelines due to inadequate knowledge of the screening guidelines recommended by the American Cancer Society, which creates a gap in practice. The purpose of this project was to develop staff education on CRC screening guidelines. The practice focused question …

Simulated Clinical Experience: An Investigation Of Emotion Understanding And Management, Neena White Jones
Simulated Clinical Experience: An Investigation Of Emotion Understanding And Management, Neena White Jones
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Many investigators have documented that lack of emotional intelligence (EI) in professional nursing correlates with patient dissatisfaction, negative patient outcomes, and litigation. However, much less information is available to nurse educators for an effective instructional strategy to increase EI skills, specifically emotion understanding and management (the most influential branches of EI) in nursing students. Grounded in the theory of EI and the theory of simulation, the purpose of this quantitative quasi experimental study was to introduce educational technology as a useful strategy for influencing EI in a convenience sample of 88 second semester students in a baccalaureate program. Research questions …

Targeted Education For The Prevention Of Vaccine Refusal, Catina Lashawn Davis
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Vaccinations are important factors in the eradication of most communicable diseases. Tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap) vaccine has been found to decrease the incidence and further spread of pertussis, and even nullify its existence, yet many postpartum mothers opt not to receive the vaccination even if eligible to do so. It was unknown whether clinical nursing staff at the project site had sufficient knowledge about Tdap vaccine to educate postpartum mothers to accept the vaccine. The practice-focused question explored whether an educational program and a toolkit implemented for nursing staff members on the postpartum nursing unit would improve Tdap vaccination …
