Treatment Outcomes Of A Tailored Smoking Cessation Programme For Individuals Accessing Addiction Treatment Services, Milan Khara, Chizimuzo T.C. Okoli

Nursing Presentations

Background: Individuals with substance use disorders (SUD) have disproportionately higher smoking prevalence and tobacco-related mortality than the general population. This high prevalence of smoking warrants a need for targeted tobacco treatment efforts.

Objectives: To examine smoking cessation outcomes and predictors of successful smoking cessation among individuals with SUD accessing a tobacco dependence clinic (TDC) within Addiction Services.

Methods: Based on clinical guidelines, participants of the TDC received behavioural therapy combined with tailored pharmacotherapy for tobacco treatment (at no cost). A retrospective chart review from 678 participants enrolled in the TDC between Sept 2007 and Dec 2011 was analyzed. 7-day point-prevalence …

Equity, Evidence & Ethics: Assessing The Implications Of Outdoor Smoke-Free Policies For Vulnerable Populations, Natasha Jategaonkar, Ann Pederson, Chizimuzo T.C. Okoli, Wendy Rice, Phoebe M. Long, Joan L. Bottorff, Natalie Hemsing, Lorraine Greaves

Nursing Presentations

Smoke-free policies in outdoor settings are becoming increasingly common. Economic and social conditions tend to influence tobacco use patterns as well as exposure to secondhand smoke. Thus, active and passive smoking are both health equity and social justice concerns.

Smoking on the Margins is a multi-component,mixed-methods project that applies an ethical framework to outdoor smoke-free policies in order to identify both concerns and opportunities to promote health and health equity.

Justification for smoke-free policies

Smoke-free spaces are primarily justified on the basis of three goals:

1) Reducing exposure to secondhand smoke;

2) Encouraging people to quit smoking; and

3) Preventing …

Effects Of A Smoke-Free Law In Parks And Beaches On Smoking Behaviour: Methods To Determine Effectiveness, Chizimuzo T.C. Okoli, Ann Pederson, Steve Chasey, Anna Liwander, Andrew Johnson

Nursing Presentations

OVERVIEW

As part of a comprehensive approach to tobacco control, smoke free laws have resulted in reductions of indoor air pollution, improvements in respiratory and cardiovascular health, reduction of smoking uptake by youth, and increasing tobacco use cessations in various jurisdictions.

Although many studies have demonstrated the beneficial effects of smoke-free policies in indoor spaces (e.g. restaurants, bars, workplaces, hospital settings, etc.), little is known about the effectiveness of such policies in outdoor public spaces.

On September 1st, 2010, Vancouver’s smoke-free by-law for the city’s parks, beaches, and facilities came into effect.

The aims of this study are …

Outcomes Of A Tailored Smoking Cessation Program For Individuals With A Substance Use And/Or Psychiatric Disorder, Chizimuzo T.C. Okoli, Milan Khara Mar 2012

Outcomes Of A Tailored Smoking Cessation Program For Individuals With A Substance Use And/Or Psychiatric Disorder, Chizimuzo T.C. Okoli, Milan Khara

Nursing Presentations

BACKGROUND: Tobacco use remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality globally. Although there has been a steady decline in the overall smoking prevalence in North America during the last decade some subsets of the population continue to smoke at high rates, particularly individuals with a history of substance use disorders (SUD) and/or psychiatric disorders (PD). Studies suggest that individuals with SUD’s and PD’s often have disproportionately higher smoking-related mortality. Studies further suggest that in clinical samples an estimated 75% of individuals with PD and up to 90% of individuals with PD concurrently smoke. This high prevalence of smoking among …

Smoking rates among Aboriginal adolescents are the highest of any population group in British Columbia, Canada. Recent studies suggest that substance use is affected by gender and ethnic identity among youth. The purpose of our study was to explore the association of gender and ethnic identity with smoking behaviour among First Nations adolescents. This study is based on a convenience sample (i.e., an on-hand, readily available sample) of 124 youth (123 First Nations and 1 Métis) recruited at youth drop-in centres, health fairs, and cultural activities. We obtained information on demographics, smoking history, Bem Sex Role Inventory (BSRI), composite measure …

Medically Ill Smokers And Planning To Quit, Audrey Darville Jan 2012

Medically Ill Smokers And Planning To Quit, Audrey Darville

Theses and Dissertations--Nursing

Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of preventable disease and is the cause of nearly 1 in 5 deaths in the United States. The prevalence of smoking has had a leveling off effect after many years of significant decline. Certain subgroups of the population, such as those with low income and certain illnesses, continue to smoke at disproportionately high rates. Reasons for these disparities in smoking rates are complex. Developing a better understanding of the issues related to persistent smoking particularly for those with medical illness and limited access to cessation resources can help focus interventions to help these high …

Symptom Assessment And Management In Patients With Heart Failure, Kyoung Suk Lee Jan 2012

Symptom Assessment And Management In Patients With Heart Failure, Kyoung Suk Lee

Theses and Dissertations--Nursing

Patients with heart failure (HF) must monitor and recognize escalating symptoms to manage worsening HF in a timely manner. However, routine symptom monitoring is not commonly performed by this population.

Providing a symptom diary along with an education and counseling session may help HF patients promote symptom monitoring and interpretation. The accumulated information about changes in daily symptoms will allow patients to easily compare current symptom status to the past without depending on memory and can rapidly capture worsening HF. To date, few studies have tested the effect of a daily symptom diary.

The purpose of this dissertation was to …

Tobacco Treatment In College Health, Joanne Brown Jan 2012

Tobacco Treatment In College Health, Joanne Brown

DNP Projects

ABSTRACT: Tobacco Treatment in College Health

The college years are a critical time in the development of smoking behavior and tobacco use. Smoking is linked to 30% of cancer deaths, 80% of deaths from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and early cardiovascular disease and death. Effective treatment interventions at this time provide an opportunity to drastically reduce premature morbidity and mortality.

This document follows the progression from the discussion of the problem to evaluation of an intervention. The first manuscript is a review of existing literature on Internet interventions with young adults, including methodology, theoretical frameworks and outcome measures for tobacco …

Characteristics Of All-Terrain Vehicles And Their Operators On Kentucky Farms, Jessica L. Wilson Jan 2012

Characteristics Of All-Terrain Vehicles And Their Operators On Kentucky Farms, Jessica L. Wilson

Theses and Dissertations--Nursing

All-terrain vehicles (ATVs) were first developed and marketed in the U.S. in the 1970s. They have soared in popularity for occupational and recreational uses since that time. In 2008, there were approximately 10.2 million all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) in use in the United States. In 2001, it was estimated that 23 million Americans rode ATVs; 69% were adults and 31% children (CPSC, 2003). Deaths and injuries from ATVs have increased over time. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Kentucky led the nation for ATV deaths from 2002-2006, with increasing numbers of fatalities annually.

ATV use on farms is increasing …

From Introduction:

Kass argues that an ethical approach in public health is one that places the fewest burdens on individuals’ health without significantly reducing the potential benefits of intervening. Yet many population health regulations are highly intrusive, compromising individual liberty and imposing penalties for non-compliance. Moreover, the benefits of these regulations and the burdens they impose may not be shared equally. When developing interventions, the state has, therefore, an obligation to consider the benefits and burdens, particularly on those vulnerable to health inequities and other disparities.
