Hospital Nurse Burnout: A Continuing Problem, David P. Paul Iii, Lama Bakhamis, Harlan M. Smith Ii, Alberto Coustasse

Alberto Coustasse, DrPH, MD, MBA, MPH

RNs are a critically important component of the U.S. healthcare system. RN burnout – the feeling of exhaustion from working long hours without rest – is a real concern, having been reported in many hospitals. We examine the background, causes and consequences of burnout among RNs in U.S. hospitals, in order to identify solutions to this problem. Findings indicate that Burnout Syndrome in RNs can be analyzed in terms of four clusters of characteristics: individual, management, organizational, and work. The consequences of burnout include increased RN turnover rates, poor job performance, and threats to patient safety. RN burnout in hospitals …

Implementation Of Motivational Interviewing Training In An Undergraduate Nursing Curriculum: Identifying Adolescents At Risk For Substance Use, Denise Seigart, Max Veltman, Janet Willhaus, Colene Letterle

Janet Willhaus

Motivational interviewing (MI) has been increasingly utilized by health care practitioners for many years. MI has been practiced by social workers, nurses, physicians, psychologists, substance use counselors, and many other health care practitioners. Unfortunately, many health care practitioners do not have adequate training in motivational interviewing, and therefore feel ill equipped to utilize this approach when faced with clients who are in need of assessment and coaching. This paper discusses our experiences with a pilot project to implement MI training within an Adolescent SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention, Referral to Treatment) content addition to the undergraduate nursing curriculum. It includes discussion …

ABSTRACT
Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common cardiac arrhythmia, the incidence of which is growing as the population ages. This disease is a significant cause of mortality and morbidity and is associated with comorbidities such as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Current AF treatment guidelines recommend identifying possible reversible causes of AF such as OSA. The Atrial Fibrillation Quality Care Program is an outpatient transition clinic designed to provide individualized evidence-based care to patients with a new diagnosis of AF. A lack of consistency in screening for OSA was found to be present in this outpatient clinic. This …

Individuals in not-for-profit group homes in Western Massachusetts diagnosed with an intellectual or developmental disability with multiple prescribing providers were …

Improving Patient Wait Times, Patient Satisfaction, Staff Satisfaction And Patient Reported Review Of Systems Completeness Through Increased Use Of Eclinicalworks Kiosk Technology In Pediatric Primary Care, Jessica Gatto Apr 2018

Improving Patient Wait Times, Patient Satisfaction, Staff Satisfaction And Patient Reported Review Of Systems Completeness Through Increased Use Of Eclinicalworks Kiosk Technology In Pediatric Primary Care, Jessica Gatto

Jessica Gatto

Background: Timeliness of care is considered one of the core aspects to quality health care. Patient wait times that exceed 20 minutes may decrease the quality of care by decreasing patient satisfaction. Generally, previous quality improvement studies have been successful in reducing patient wait times and increasing patient satisfaction using a check-in kiosk.

Local Problem: Patient wait times in a pediatric primary care setting were found to exceed 20 minutes. Additionally, an existing check-in kiosk was not being utilized 100% of the time during the patient check-in process, potentially leading to longer total patient wait times and corresponding decreased …
