Perceptions And Experiences Of Intimate Partner Violence Among Hispanic College Students, Racquel Vera
Perceptions And Experiences Of Intimate Partner Violence Among Hispanic College Students, Racquel Vera
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Intimate partner violence (IPV) is recognized as a serious, growing problem on college campuses. IPV rates among college students exceed estimates reported for the general population. Few studies have examined the impact of IPV among the Hispanic college student (HCS) population or explored how HCSs perceive and experience IPV.
Focusing on young adults (ages 18 to 25 years), this mixed methods study was designed to explore the perceptions and experiences of IPV focusing on levels of victimization and perpetration in relation to gender role attitudes and beliefs, exposure to parental IPV, acculturation, and religiosity. A sample of 120 HCSs was …

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Abstract
Attention to place in public health policy development at the provincial level often overlooks the specific and unique needs of rural places. The principle aim of this research was to explore whether and how “place” was considered in the context of rural Ontario public health policy implementation for chronic disease prevention (CDP) programs. A secondary analysis of focus group and interview data along with the policy documents from three rural Ontario public health unit sites for the primary Renewal of Public Health Systems (RePHS) study was conducted. Based on a review of the literature on rural health policy and …

Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus Education Effectiveness For Athletic Trainers At A University Community Physical Activity Center., Afton Cope
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a problem nationally and affects many people from all walks of life. Community associated MRSA is often ignored and not viewed as significant, thus there is a lack of education on the topic. One area that is at a particular risk for the transmission of Community Associated MRSA is physical activity centers. Education in these areas could improve the knowledge of community acquired MRSA among employees and decrease the likelihood of infection at physical activity centers. In this study a pre-test was given. After the pre-test an educational powerpoint on MRSA was presented and then …

Understanding Faculty And Non-Traditional Student Perceptions Of Self-Directed Learning In A Practical Nursing Program, Carmen Marie Rogers
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study was designed to identify and investigate nursing faculty and student perspectives of self-directed learning in a practical nursing program. It also explored the degree to which student's perceptions of self-directed learning exhibited factors consistent with that of critical thinking. This study is important because self-directed learning and its critical thinking elements are essential in providing safe, competent, effective, and efficient nursing care within practice and education. Using an explanatory case study design the practice of self-directed learning within a practical nursing program was examined through the use of: classroom observations, interviews with nursing faculty, nursing students, and document …

Perceptions Of A Dedicated Education Unit In The Mississippi Delta, Jacquelyn Felecia Brownlow
Doctoral Projects
The highest health care disparities in the country plague the Mississippi Delta. A weakened economy, minimal access to healthcare and an outdated traditional clinical learning environment place enormous strains on nursing education in this area to provide more nurses. The office of Nursing Workforce reported a 14% to 16% nursing turnover in the Delta compared to the national average of 13.5%. As a result, the health care organization has encountered high nurse turnover, increased staffing shortages, and a decrease in nursing quality indicators. As an effort to improve clinical education and bridge gaps between education and practice, several schools in …

An Educational Approach: Increasing College Freshmen's Knowledge Regarding Sexually Transmitted Infections, Jennie Mcclain
Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports
According to the Centers for Disease Control (2009), young adults account for only 25% o fsexually active persons in the United States, but account for 50% of the newly diagnosed cases of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Some young adults may not have received appropriate or credible information on sexual health by which to make knowledgeable decisions that may influence the rest of their lives. High schools are not required to offer comprehensive sex education. Therefore, some students may have received abstinence-only sex education. Risk reduction and disease prevention are important in college health. This evidenced-based practice project included the creation, …

The Lived Experience Of Transitioning From The Foster Care System To Adulthood, Carla Renee Parker
Doctoral Dissertations
Approximately 408,000 children were in foster care in the United States at the end of fiscal year 2010 (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2012). Some children return to their families of origin; however, some children remain in the foster care system until they reach age 18 or 21 and must leave, which is called “emancipation” or “aging out” (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2012). Transitioning foster youth are at risk for many negative consequences including poverty and homelessness. These negative consequences are associated with significant health implications, such as mental health problems and risky sexual behaviors. …

Christian Villanueva - Trauma Exposure Reported By Women Recently Deported From The U.S. To Mexico, Christian Villanueva
Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program 2013
In 2012 the U.S. deported approximately 200,000 individuals to Mexico; a significant proportion of these individuals were women. The combined effect of previous traumatic experiences with that of being deported to Mexico is detrimental to women’s health. The trauma suffered through this process results in high levels of stress that lead to a variety of mental and physical health problems for Mexican women, disproportionally compared to men, who entered into and are deported from the U.S. The purpose of this study is to describe the life history of trauma exposure of women who have recently been deported from the U.S. …

Prisons have become the primary health care provider for some of the poorest and sickest women in the United States. By virtue of both biological sex and gender, incarcerated women have health needs different from those of their male counterparts. The purpose of this qualitative investigation was to understand better women’s perceptions of how prison has affected their physical health. We conducted this investigation in a maximum- security women’s prison in the United States using focus group methodology (12 focus groups, made up of 65 women). Women described several specific prison- based factors that affected their physical health: limited and …

The Perception Of Health Assets Of A Rural Idaho Community Based On The Community-As-Partner Model, Cherno Bah
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
To improve the health status of rural communities, it is important to recognize and utilize all available health assets the community has to offer. When considering health assets, community members often fail to recognize resources such as economic status, communication, education, recreation, and politics, and instead focus only on obvious resources such as available physicians, Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) services and access to health clinics. The purpose of this study was to identify what community health assets are perceived among members of the rural community of Grangeville, Idaho and how these assets might be categorized according to the nine sub-systems …
