Perioperative Handover Using Isbar At Two Sites: A Quality Improvement Project, Patricia Kitney Dec 2018

Perioperative Handover Using Isbar At Two Sites: A Quality Improvement Project, Patricia Kitney

Journal of Perioperative Nursing

Background:The use of ISBAR handover principles assists in enabling the provision of best care to perioperative patients1. Reviews of post-operative handover research studies confirm the positive association between the quality of handovers and the decrease in adverse patient events2,3. Other reviews identify that globally handovers can be highly unpredictable and unreliable3–6. Therefore, the argument for standardised handovers to reduce the probability of adverse patient events in comparison to unstructured handovers, which have been shown to increase the chances of adverse patient events, is worth investigating.

Method:The method used was a multisite quasi-experimental design involving audits of perioperative handovers …

The Politics Of Abortion And Maternal Health: A Discussion Paper, Ihsan Ullah, Ayaz Ayub, Edwin Van Teijlingen Dec 2018

The Politics Of Abortion And Maternal Health: A Discussion Paper, Ihsan Ullah, Ayaz Ayub, Edwin Van Teijlingen

Journal of Asian Midwives (JAM)

Abortion should be legally allowed for women because it can save mothers from childbirth-related complications and death. Legal abortion is one of the safest methods to terminate a pregnancy when there is a risk to the mother’s health by childbirth or severe deformity of the fetus or it is unwanted. Unfortunately, approximately half of all abortions worldwide mostly in nations where abortion is severely restricted and are performed in dangerous settings. These risky abortions are a significant contributor to maternal morbidity and disability. Limiting a woman's access to an abortion does not stop abortion; rather, it just encourages more risky …

Patient Experience Journal

Patient engagement has been identified as both a goal and strategy to lower health care costs and improve health care outcomes. However, a lack of consensus and clarity exists as to how the process of patient engagement is implemented in clinical practice. Research addressing the underlying and crucial components of effective patient engagement is limited, leaving a significant gap as to how providers engage patients as active collaborators in their health and health care.

This study provides specific, detailed insight and description into the processes through which advanced practice mental health nurses engaged low-income depressed mothers in a mental health …

The Qualitative Report

Current approaches to assessing medication exposure fail to capture the complexity of the phenomenon and the context in which it occurs. This study’s purpose was to develop a typology of subgroups of patients who share common patterns of medication exposure. To create the typology, we used an exemplar sample of 30 patients in a large public healthcare system who had been prescribed the pharmacogenetically actionable opioids codeine or tramadol. Data related to medication exposure were drawn from large data repositories. Using a person-oriented qualitative approach, eight subgroups of patients who shared common patterns of medication exposure were identified. The subgroups …

Clinical Handover Of Immediate Post-Operative Patients: A Literature Review, Samantha Clarke, Karen G. Clark-Burg, Elaine Pavlos

Journal of Perioperative Nursing

The transfer of professional responsibility for some or all aspects of patient care, within and between professional groups on a temporary or permanent basis, is termed clinical handover. Communication during clinical handover is considered a challenging patient safety problem. A key principle of transfer of professional responsibility for patient care is the minimum amount of information or content that must be contained and transferred in any particular type of clinical handover.

Aim: The purpose of this literature review was to establish the scope of the literature about clinical handover from the operating room to Post Anaesthesia Care Unit (PACU) published …

Pornography As A Public Health Issue: Promoting Violence And Exploitation Of Children, Youth, And Adults, Elisabeth Taylor

Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence

The pornography industry is expanding exponentially as a result of ongoing technological advances. The ability to stream videos over the internet and the ubiquity of the smart phone have meant that pornography producers are able to use algorithms to target potential consumers, to cultivate new sexual tastes and to deliver content to a more diverse audience over mobile devices. The advent of virtual reality pornography with interactive sex toys and sex robots imbued with artificial intelligence promises to unleash a further step-change in the extent to which pornography influences ‘real-world’ sexual culture. The critical analysis of pornography undertaken over decades …

Evidence-based guidelines for the management of surgical smoke and bioaerosols for perioperative nurses are necessary to improve the quality of care for patients and to ensure a safe environment in operating rooms. A survey of 377 operating room (OR) nurses throughout Thailand was used to assess the incidence of health problems related to surgical smoke exposure, as well as the current practices for these substances. A high percentage of OR nurses reported little or no use of smoke evacuation tools such as central smoke evacuation systems (100 per cent), portable smoke evacuation units (82 per cent), wall suction with inline …

Is Your Graduate Nurse Suffering From Transition Shock?, Erin Wakefield Mar 2018

Is Your Graduate Nurse Suffering From Transition Shock?, Erin Wakefield

Journal of Perioperative Nursing

The term ‘transition shock’ is a relatively new concept used to describe the experience of moving from the comfortable and familiar role of the preregistration nursing student to the professional registered nurse (RN)1. The initial and most dramatic stage in this theory of role adaption occurs over the first four months of professional practice.

Transition shock has foundational basis in Kramer’s theory of ‘reality shock,’ which describes the phenomenon of studying for many years to practice a particular role, and then finding the professional reality is different than expected. Reality shock has four phases – the honeymoon phase, the shock …
