The Effect Of Self-Help Support Groups On Self Esteem And Blood Glucose In Young Insulin-Dependent Diabetics, Linda L. Woertz Aug 1982

The Effect Of Self-Help Support Groups On Self Esteem And Blood Glucose In Young Insulin-Dependent Diabetics, Linda L. Woertz

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Successful adaptation to diabetes is probably a function of many factors: the stress involved, the rewards, the motivation of the individual, and the self concept. The more optimal the self concept the more optimal the behavior may be. By helping the patient shape a positive self concept, a base can be built for blood glucose control (Bruhn, 1977, pp. 93-97). One method of improving self concept or self esteem may be through the development of self-help support groups for diabetics.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of self-help support group intervention on the levels of self …

The Effect Of Nursing Discharge Counseling Sessions On The Pre-Discharge Anxiety Level Of The Neurotically-Depressed Female In A Community Hospital Setting, Deborah Snyder Galasso

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Discharge from the hospital has been identified as a time when patients are in need of additional nursing support. The prospect of leaving the protective hospital environment to return to the home environment with its life stresses can cause anxiety. This study was designed to test the effect of a nursing intervention, discharge counseling sessions, on the anxiety level of the neurotically-depressed female prior to discharge.

The null hypothesis guiding this study was: nursing discharge counseling sessions will have no significant (α=0.05) effect on the pre-discharge anxiety level of the neurotically-depressed female in a community hospital setting. The State-Trait Anxiety …

The Effect Of Pre-Admission Crisis Nursing Intervention On The Anxiety Level Of Elderly Persons On Admission To A Nursing Home, Doreen C. K. Lee Jun 1976

The Effect Of Pre-Admission Crisis Nursing Intervention On The Anxiety Level Of Elderly Persons On Admission To A Nursing Home, Doreen C. K. Lee

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The experimental study attempted to determine whether pre-admission crisis nursing intervention had any effect on the level of anxiety of elderly people when they were transferred from an acute hospital to a nursing home.

The literature review related to trends in numbers of nursing homes and in the increase in longevity. Several articles indicated that the aged, as a group, lacked power to alter their situations. The need for patients to express their feelings and participate in their own decisions was stressed in various studies. Other theories discussed theoretical aspects and goals of crisis intervention. Several articles suggested that crisis …

A systematic, random sample of medical records was taken from two hospitals arbitrarily included in the study on the basis of bed capacity and distance from mental health facilities.

Each medical record that was reviewed has been placed in a category based on whether an emotional disorder was identified in it by the medical personnel, or whether it contained recorded behaviors that could indicate …

Parent-Mediated Contingency Management In The Normal Child, Lena Lantry Jun 1974

Parent-Mediated Contingency Management In The Normal Child, Lena Lantry

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Today there is great need in the community for a preventive nursing intervention tool that would reach a greater number of children who have behavior problems not serious enough to require clinical help, yet disruptive enough, to impair the quality of their lives. Specifically, there is need for a tool that could incorporate in its design an economy of manpower and means and yet preserve the dignity and security of its beneficiaries.

In 1972, researchers Miller and Reiswig demonstrated the effective use of parent-mediated contingency management with four families in the community by the case study, method. To further develop …

The Effect Of A Repressive-Inspirational Discussion Group On The Self-Esteem Of Selected Elderly Individuals, Rebecca Hollesca Gucilatar

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This study was conducted to determine if the use of a repressive-inspirational discussion group has significance in changing the level of self-esteem of institutionalized essentially normal elderly individuals.

A review of literature indicates the need for a group method that can help in developing and maintaining self-esteem in the elderly. Different studies reveal the need for self-esteem in the aged. The development of self-esteem is necessary so that elderly individuals can cope with situations in daily living and maintain physical and mental health.

An experimental method was utilized in conducting this study. A sample of twenty elderly individuals was selected …

Leadership Techniques In Groups With Chronic Schizophrenics, Judith L. Jensen, Leona W. Mcgrew Apr 1973

Leadership Techniques In Groups With Chronic Schizophrenics, Judith L. Jensen, Leona W. Mcgrew

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The study was designed to assess the level of anxiety experienced by chronic schizophrenic patients when two different methods of leadership were used in group therapy. A search of literature revealed suggestions for modification of leadership approach due to the tenuous anxiety tolerance of chronic schizophrenics but no studies were found directly related to the amount of anxiety resulting from different leadership approaches.

A structured group in which the leader maintained a directive role was compared with a nonstructured group in which the leader maintained a nondirective role in the group process. The randomized sample included five male and five …
