Screening For Suicide In Veterans With Cancer, Dina E. Mcneil
Screening For Suicide In Veterans With Cancer, Dina E. Mcneil
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Veterans are at a higher suicide risk than the general population. Veterans with cancer are at a 47% higher risk for suicide. The Veterans Health Administration has an annual suicide screening requirement, but no requirement for more frequent assessment in this high-risk population. Clinical staff may also be hesitant due to fear and anxiety, serving as a barrier to screening. The objective of this project was to educate oncology clinical staff about risk factors for suicide in veterans with cancer, the use of the Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS), referral processes, and local resources, and intended to increase the number …
A Behavioral Intervention Checklist To Reduce Re-Hospitalizations In Residents With Mental Illness, Jeffery Davis
A Behavioral Intervention Checklist To Reduce Re-Hospitalizations In Residents With Mental Illness, Jeffery Davis
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Skilled nursing facilities are an essential component of the continuum of care and, with the rapidly aging population, represent an increasing cost to the healthcare system. The policies beginning in the 1960s promoting the deinstitutionalization of mental health institutions have resulted in increasing numbers of individuals with serious mental illnesses now residing in skilled nursing facilities. The complex needs of individuals with mental illness have been associated with an even greater cost of care, deficient quality, and safety concerns. This quality improvement project analyzed the impact of an evidenced-based, structured behavioral intervention checklist on rehospitalization rates in individuals with mental …

Depression remains an increasingly prevalent and underdiagnosed disorder affecting approximately 21 million adults in the United States with only 66% seeking treatment (NIMH, 2022). Untreated depression can lead to worsening mental and physical health which negatively impacts a person’s quality of life. The implementation of routine depression screening in primary care is recommended by the US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) to improve early detection leading to improved outcomes (USPSTF, 2023). Despite increased depression prevalence and USPSTF recommendation, there remained an absence of routine depression screening in a primary care practice in Midwest Illinois which led to the development of …

Implementing The Timed Up And Go Test To Prevent Falls, Shamika Allen

Falls are the most reported injury within the geriatric population. Behavioral health patients have the most injurious falls, with falls impacting multiple things such as staffing, cost, injury, and quality of life for the patient (Ocker et al., 2020). Currently, the standardized fall assessment for new patients upon admission is the Morse Fall Scale (MFS). This fall assessment was intended to assess the level of fall risk for patients who are on an acute medical floor during their hospital stay. The Timed Up and Go test (TUG) is a fall assessment that has been used in geriatric patients to assess …
Cbt Technology Implementation With Pediatric And Adolescent Populations, Tracey W. Kreipe, Heath Gage, Sandra Obiebi

Abstract
Digital therapy is a growing healthcare intervention improving limited access to specialty care for specific populations and geographic areas. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) applications focus on treating anxiety and depression and assist pediatric and adolescent patients in learning behavioral techniques as they wait for 3-6 months or longer to see a mental health provider. Such delays are attributed to the national shortage of mental health practitioners and the further scarcity of fewer psychiatric providers in rural areas, causing the potential for adverse patient outcomes. The setting for this 8-week quality improvement project was a pediatric care clinic that sees …
Empowering Nurses To Recognize Post-Stroke Depression In The African American Community, Deidra Frisbie, Robin Simon
Empowering Nurses To Recognize Post-Stroke Depression In The African American Community, Deidra Frisbie, Robin Simon
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
African Americans (AA) have the highest prevalence of stroke and death compared to other racial groups in the United States. Post-stroke depression (PSD) affects approximately 1/3 of all stroke patients and is underdiagnosed in the African American community.
Aim: By using a mHealth mobile app and a Psychiatry provider list at discharge, PSD can be identified, and interventions initiated, thus decreasing the sequela of PSD in AA.
Methods: Nurses were provided education on PSD, expressions of depression in African-Americans, cultural humility, implicit bias, and the importance of the nurse's role in developing a therapeutic relationship.
Results: Quantitative analysis revealed the …
Implementation Of Routine Screening To Detect Early Cases Of Depression And Anxiety In Hispanic Adolescents In The Primary Care Setting, Latoya Hayward
Implementation Of Routine Screening To Detect Early Cases Of Depression And Anxiety In Hispanic Adolescents In The Primary Care Setting, Latoya Hayward

Depression and anxiety are among the leading causes of illness and disability in adolescents and are two of the most prevalent mental health conditions in Latino youth. If left unrecognized and untreated, these conditions can lead to decreased quality of life and increased rates of suicide. Researchers recommend early mental health screening to occur in the primary care setting. Through routine screening using evidence-based screening tools (PHQ-9 and GAD-7), the primary goal of this quality improvement project was to increase early detection of depression and anxiety in primary care and initiate early treatment. Project methods included implementation of new workflow, …

Depression is one of the most underdiagnosed and untreated disorders affecting more than 16 million people in the United States each year (Henry et al., 2020). Unmanaged depression can lead to emotional suffering, decreased productivity, reduced income, impaired relationships, and an increased risk for comorbidities (Sinisalchi et al., 2020). It can affect anyone, however, individuals who are non-white, female, undereducated, disabled, pregnant or postpartum, have low socioeconomic status, or lack social support are at an increased risk (United States Preventative Services Task Force, 2019). The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville We Care Clinic provides primary care to minority patient populations who …
