Relationships Between Personality Factors And Job Satisfaction And Importance For Operating Room And Surgical Unit Staff Nurses, Darla J. Anderson

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This comparative study was designed to explore relationships between personality factors and the satisfaction and importance of selected job factors for staff nurses employed in the operating room and on surgical units. The forty-six subjects were female, registered nurses who were employed full-time either in the operating room or on the surgical units of a 516-bed medical center.

The conceptual basis for the study was found in the motivational theories of Maslow, Herzberg, and Argyris, which ail point to the higher level of satisfaction experienced by individuals who have the opportunity to fulfill their needs for personal growth.

The Effect Of Individual Preoperative Interviews In Addition To Group Preoperative Teaching On Preoperative And Postoperative Stress, Barbara J. Wilde Jul 1974

The Effect Of Individual Preoperative Interviews In Addition To Group Preoperative Teaching On Preoperative And Postoperative Stress, Barbara J. Wilde

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this experimental study was to investigate the effect of preoperative individual interviews in addition to the regular group and incidental preoperative teaching, on preoperative and postoperative stress. This effect was measured by the Multiple Affect Adjective Check List (MAACL), number of postoperative analgesics, and number of postoperative catheterizations for urinary retention.

It was hypothesized that patients receiving the individual interview would (1) have lower preoperative MAACL scores on anxiety, hostility. and depression, (2) have lower postoperative MAACL scores on anxiety, hostility, and depression, (3) show a smaller difference between the preoperative and postoperative MAACL scores, (4) require …

A Study Of The Relationship Between Preoperative Anxiety And Postoperative Vomiting, Taye Grace Emori Sep 1965

A Study Of The Relationship Between Preoperative Anxiety And Postoperative Vomiting, Taye Grace Emori

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The identification of anxiety as a causative factor in post operative vomiting was the purpose of this study. It was hypothesized that the more anxiety a patient experienced before surgery, the greater would be his chances of vomiting immediately after surgery.

The establishment of an underlying basis and need for a study of the relationship of anxiety and postoperative vomiting were made through a review of literature. The factors which researchers believed were contributory to postoperative vomiting and the possible inclusion of anxiety as one of them were studied.

Three physiologic measures (systolic blood pressure, heart rate, and eosinophil count) …

A Comparative Study Of Discomfort Experienced By Surgical Patients On Three Selected Postoperative Days, Lillian Barker Bartlett May 1965

A Comparative Study Of Discomfort Experienced By Surgical Patients On Three Selected Postoperative Days, Lillian Barker Bartlett

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A descriptive survey was conducted to compare the discomfort experienced on three selected postoperative days to determine if there is one day identified by the patient as the most uncomfortable and to assess the symptoms of which he might complain. A checklist of twelve symptoms common to postsurgical patients was administered on the evenings of the second, third and fourth postoperative days by the researcher. Findings indicated that nineteen or 56 per cent of the thirty-four patients interviewed stated that the second day was most uncomfortable, nine or 27 per cent the third and six or 17 per cent the …

The Relationship Of Central Venous Pressure To Hemorrhage In Open Heart Surgery, Mable Reynolds Jun 1964

The Relationship Of Central Venous Pressure To Hemorrhage In Open Heart Surgery, Mable Reynolds

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The problem of this study was to review 100 open heart surgical cases in a selected hospital to determine the changes occurring in central venous pressure in relation to blood loss.

The review of literature revealed that central venous pressure is an important factor in determining immediate postoperative care of open heart surgical patients. If central venous pressure falls below the normal range of 5 to 10 centimeters of water, hemorrhage is suspected. If central venous pressure is elevated between 15 and 20 centimeters of water, cardiac tamponade is suspected.

The descriptive survey method of research was used. Medical records …

Effects Of Music Therapy And Personal Interaction On The Preoperative Patient, Phyllis Jean Nix Jun 1963

Effects Of Music Therapy And Personal Interaction On The Preoperative Patient, Phyllis Jean Nix

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This study was conducted to discover the effects of (1) an interpersonal relationship and (2) an interpersonal relationship and music therapy on preoperative patients in a selected hospital.

The descriptive survey was chosen as the method of study. A checklist and a tape recording of selected music were used as a tool of research. Two groups of preoperative patients were given nursing care by the researcher. Patients in Group One received care with an aim toward developing an interpersonal relationship, while patients in Group Two received the same as Group One with the addition of music therapy.

Findings revealed a …

An Evaluation Of Two Preoperative Skin Preparation Procedures Used In The Operating Room Of A Selected Hospital, Maxine Darling Jun 1960

An Evaluation Of Two Preoperative Skin Preparation Procedures Used In The Operating Room Of A Selected Hospital, Maxine Darling

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to find out the immediate and residual antibacterial effects of the two preoperative skin preparation procedures most commonly used in the operating room of this selected hospital.

This study was conducted on one hundred selected surgical patients from the general medical and surgical units of this hospital. The preoperative skin preparation Procedure A (ether-alcohol-tincture of zephiran) was compared with the preoperative skin preparation Procedure B (3 per cent hexachlorophene solution). Data for the comparison were gathered by taking four cultures at specified times. The cultures were taken from the operative sites on the surgical …

Incidents Which Threaten Patient Safety Classified For Use In Teaching Operating Room Nursing, Elsie Dorothy Vivian Wendth

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The study was conducted in an attempt to identify incidents threatening the safety of patients in the care of operating room personnel and to classify them for use in teaching safety in operating room nursing.

A Pilot Study Of The Nature Of Learning Experiences In The Operating Room, Lucile Lewis Jun 1958

A Pilot Study Of The Nature Of Learning Experiences In The Operating Room, Lucile Lewis

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

It was the purpose of this study to consider four phases of the nature of the learning experiences of students of nursing in the operating room. The phases of the problem studied were: (1) Are the learning experiences "new" or "an expansion and/or clarification of previous learnings?" (2) Do new learning experiences continue throughout the clinical assignment to the operating room? (3) Are the learning experiences concentrated in some areas of learning more than in others? (4) Is there a relationship between the area of learning and the type of duty performed by the student in the operating room?
