Although under-5 mortality rates have significantly decreased, most countries in sub-Saharan Africa with high mortality rates are unlikely to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal of at least as low as 25 deaths per 1000 livebirths by 2030.

Fortunately, there have already been countless studies examining the longer-term implications of these two factors on health. Loneliness and social isolation have been found to impact cardiovascular health, stress response, immune function, resilience, mental health, attachment, spiritual health, and many other determinants of health. Objective: To examine associations between serum micronutrients and neurobehavioral function and the mediating role of sleep quality in early adolescents. Design: In this cross-sectional study, peripheral blood samples were analyzed for iron and zinc levels. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and Penn Computerized Neurocognitive Battery were used to assess sleep quality and neurobehavioral function, respectively. The generalized linear regressions (bootstrap) were performed to estimate the associations. Setting: Jintan, China Participants: 226 adolescents (106 females) from the Jintan Child Cohort study. Results: Adolescents with low iron (< 75 ug/dl) (OR=1.29, p=0.04) and low zinc (< 70 ug/dl) (OR=1.58, p0.05). Conclusion: Iron and zinc deficiencies may possibly be associated with poor sleep and neurobehavioral function among early adolescents. Poor sleep may partially mediate the relationship between micronutrients and neurobehavioral function.

Cognitive development is an important part of infant growth since intellectual predilections in infancy set enduring patterns. Evidence supports that exclusive or mixed breastfeeding for at least one month may improve general child cognition scores. Breast milk contains nutrients such as docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), arachidonic acid (AA), zinc, choline, and vitamin B12 that enhance myelination in the brain to improve cognition. Even if formula is able to be fortified with these vitamins and minerals, formula-fed infants tend to experience slower digestion with less nutrient absorption. The US Preventative Task Force and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services recommend screening for perinatal and postpartum depression (PPD) during well-child visits that occur during the first year of the baby’s life. Postpartum means the time after childbirth, and postpartum depression is defined as a variant of major depressive disorder that occur during pregnancy or within 4 weeks of delivery. Current pediatric guidelines recommend that PPD screening occur at three to five days after birth and at one, two, four, six, nine and twelve month well-child evaluations during the first year of life. Following the death of a child, recent studies found bereaved parents experienced a higher level of grief, family dysfunction, more physical and psychological problems. The loss of an only child is one of the risk factors related to parents’ poorer outcomes. This manuscript explores the incidence and implications of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and outlines a project assessing parental perception of their own ACEs screening during their child’s wellness visit. ACEs are adversarial events occurring during childhood, which may be chronic or singular. Abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction result in negative outcomes, including compromised neurological development and cognitive behaviors, developmental delays, poor lifestyle choices, and reduced mental and physical health. Introduction: Lack of physical activity (PA) serves as one of the contributing factors to pediatric obesity in African American (AA) youth.

Objective: Further examination of the Social Ecological Model [SEM] influences on PA in AA youth is vital. The purpose of this pilot study is to explore environmental factors, built environment (BE) and parental role, in PA promotion.

Methods: Using mixed method data collection, a convenience sample of 28 AA parents/caregivers of school-aged children (6-12 years) enrolled in Chicago Youth Programs (CYP) completed an online survey. Many children entering early childhood education programs have symptoms of autism spectrum disorder yet remain undiagnosed. Research suggests this is especially true for low-income and minority children who may not participate in regular pediatric check-ups, have parents with low health literacy, or who may experience provider bias. Problem. While anxiety and depression are prevalent in the adolescent population and can have significant long-term consequences, treatment rates remain low. The gold standard for treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), but this is often unavailable.

Methods. This project aimed to increase access to CBT through a school-based program. Students from a local homeschool cooperative participated in the Creating Opportunities for Personal Empowerment (COPE). Measures of anxiety and depressive symptoms were collected at baseline, after the program, and one month after the program.
