Stress And Coping Strategies Adopted By Mothers Of Children Admitted In Pediatric Intensive Care Unit., Anisha P. R, Remya U R
Manipal Journal of Nursing and Health Sciences
Introduction: Planned or unplanned hospitalization increases the family’s stress and anxiety level. Hospitalization creates stress as they interrupt normal routines and place increased demands on parents who must further divide their time between the normal responsibilities and their hospitalized child. Many parents feel a lack of control and sense of powerlessness when their child is hospitalized. Objectives: The objectives of the study were to identify the stressors and coping strategies adopted by mothers of children admitted in pediatric intensive care unit and to determine the co-relation between stressors and coping strategies adopted by mothers of children admitted in PICU. Methods: …

Using Family Focused-Care Solutions To Improve Child’S Quality Of Life, Joshua M. Del Sol
Nursing | Senior Theses
Chronic illness in children impacts not only themselves but their families too. Everyone in the family supports each other and provides each other with pretty much all our physiological needs including our emotional needs. Parents/caregivers are the role models for their young children and really shape the person they become because basic values and their early relationships are formed. A family provides that consistent balance in our life that is the center of our life at a young age. When children are diagnosed with a chronic illness, parents may feel responsible, ashamed, guilty, or angry. Families may turn on each …
Stress As A Contributing Factor For Pediatric Obesity: Literature Review And Internship Experience, Jessica Handley
Stress As A Contributing Factor For Pediatric Obesity: Literature Review And Internship Experience, Jessica Handley
The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing Undergraduate Honors Theses
This article is an examination of how stress drives diet and physical activity behaviors that contribute to pediatric obesity in the United States. An increasing rate of childhood obesity is being reported in the United States and therefore a multitude of studies and reviews have been conducted on the topic. This review of the literature systematically analyzes how stress, diet, and physical activity behaviors contribute to this rising rate of pediatric obesity. An analysis of the chosen articles for review indicates that stress and its counterpart (resilience) tend to be driving forces in how American children and adolescents participate in …

School Nursing Practice And Experiences During School Closures, Susie E. Birden Brown
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This evidence-based quality improvement project was to evaluate public school nurses’ relationships and reaction to their new work environment during the closure of schools in Northern California resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. This project addressed the change in school nursing, especially the nurses’ working environment. A stress management program was offered to the school nurses as an intervention to give them information on perceived stress. The stress management program included mindfulness and stress-relieving techniques over a 1-month period. The research methodology used in the project was a pre- and postintervention using the Perceived Stress Scale-10 (PSS) to measure if the …
Resilience And Coping In The Adolescent And Young Adult With Type 1 Diabetes, Debra L. Messinger
Resilience And Coping In The Adolescent And Young Adult With Type 1 Diabetes, Debra L. Messinger
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
There is a need to understand the roles coping strategies play in enhancing resilience in adolescents and young adults with type 1 diabetes between the ages of 18-30. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between and among positive, protective coping strategies (courageous coping), negative coping strategies (defensive coping), and resilience. The Resilience in Illness Model (Haase, Kinter, Monahan, & Robb, 2014) was the theoretical model which guided this research.
A convenience sample was recruited via diabetes organizations’ Facebook and Forum pages, a College Diabetes Network chapter meeting, and Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundations’ (JDRF) sponsored events. Data …

Parents Of Children Who Had Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy: A Mixed-Methods, Exploratory Study, Natalene Kramer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Background: There is scant literature addressing the parents of children who had hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). therefore only inferences may be made as to issues of that experience affecting parents.

Methods: A parallel, convergent mixed-methods design was used to explore experiences and perceptions of these parents regarding their experiences and life changes. The quantitative strand addressed four research questions which …
Stress In Parents Of Children With Type 1 Diabetes, Megan B. Carter
Stress In Parents Of Children With Type 1 Diabetes, Megan B. Carter
DNP Projects
Pediatric healthcare providers across the country care for many children with complex chronic diseases. Many of these children are not developmentally mature enough to manage their disease process, leaving the parent of the chronically ill child to manage their disease. The parent of the chronically ill child may experience stress related to their child’s illness, termed pediatric parenting stress, and may have difficulty dealing with this stress (Streisand, Kazak, & Tercyak, 2003). The manuscripts in this Practice Inquiry Project further investigate the relationship between pediatric parenting stress and the health of the parent and the chronically ill child. The instruments …

Subjects: A convenience sample of 33 parents/guardians of children enrolled in a mid-Atlantic coordinated health service plan has been identified, invited and signed consents. …

An Explanatory Study Of Maternal Stress And Coping With A Cystic Fibrosis Child, Leslie G. Potter
Nursing Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to explore the concept of coping with a cystic fibrosis (CF) child and to define coping strategies from the perspective of the mother. The research design was based upon a phenomenological approach with analysis of transcribed, semi-structured interviews with mothers of CF children. A purposive sample of eight mothers with CF children were interviewed to explore the maternal CF experience. Each interview was tape recorded and followed up with a phone call to allow the mothers to add additional information, if so desired. Data analysis consisted of reviewing each typed, verbatim transcript to categorize …

Development And Testing Of The Stress Adaptation Scale For Parents With Chronically Ill Children (Sasp), Carolyn M. Rutledge
Nursing Theses & Dissertations
This research study consisted of four phases used to develop and test the Stress Adaptation Scale for Parents with Chronically Ill Children (ASP). The first phase dealt with developing the items on the SASP from a review of the literature and the researcher's professional experience. The SASP was then divided into the six categories of health care, social, personal, familial, financial, and spiritual. In phase II, content validity was evaluated by a panel of experts. In phase III, stability over time and face validity was demonstrated using 26 parents of chronically ill children. The SASP achieved a Pearson's r=.85 with …
