Interactive Learning Environment: Engaging Students Using Clickers, Carol Sternberger

Educators continue to search for effective methods that will engage students in their learning. This article presents the integration of clickers while using the constructivist approach to foster critical thinking wile engaging learners in a large classroom setting. A 22-item survey was used to measure the perceived value by students to the use of clickers in engaging them in the learning process and fostering critical thinking. Clickers, also known as personal response systems, created an interactive environment, moving students beyond simple recall to application, analysis, and construction of knowledge.

As a Cerner AES subscriber for two years, the faculty at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) has made great strides in implementing the electronic health record (EHR) into our nursing courses. Currently, students enrolled in NUR 130 Essential Clinical Skills use the EHR to document their patient care and actions during skill performance competency demonstrations, more commonly known as “checkoffs.” In previous semesters, Essential Clinical Skill Courses (NUR 130) required students to perform the skills separately and did not integrate the skill within the realm of total patient care. Discharge is included in every patient's plan of care. It is considered a basic procedure but, without a clear definition of each provider's responsibilities during discharge, duplication of tasks and errors of omission occur (Byrnes et al., 2009; Gawande, 2009). On a medical unit in a Silicon Valley hospital, RNs (Registered Nurse) are often inundated with auxiliary tasks in the hours before discharge. This is partly due to their proximity to the patient, but is mainly from the lack of a standard RN discharge procedure.
