Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Problem: Safety concerns have existed for more than 40 years about how hazardous drug (HD) exposure contributes to long- and short-term adverse health outcomes for healthcare workers (HCWs). Careless handling may cause toxic residues to infiltrate hospital environments and patient care areas, and can even be traced to patients’ homes. New government regulations will require healthcare organizations to minimize exposure risks to HCWs by fully implementing the U.S. Pharmacopeia (USP) Convention Chapter 800: Hazardous Drugs: Handling in Healthcare Settings (USP, 2016) on December 1, 2019. According to Polovich and Olsen (2017), “The implementation of the USP <800> Standards will represent …800>

Valley Fever: Educating Primary Care Providers and Allied Healthcare Professionals
Abstract
Problem: Coccidioidomycosis (cocci), informally Valley Fever (VF), infects the lungs with the fungal spore coccidioides. It is prevalent in areas where soil disturbance occurs. Currently, there are no related educational or standardized guidelines exist for primary care providers (PCPs) in California’s Central Valley, where VF is highly endemic (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2018).
Context: A Doctor of Nursing Practice project educational program for PCPs and allied healthcare workers (AHWs) at the Adventist Health Central Valley Network (AHCVN) clinics. The project aimed to educate PCPs to …

Context: The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project implemented a hazardous drug (HD) safe-handling personal protective equipment (PPE) toolkit in accordance to USP <800>standards and hospital policies at an ambulatory cancer infusion center to improve nurses' adherence with PPE use.
Interventions: The project consisted of (a) a safe-handling PPE …
Coaching Nurse Leaders In Conflict Management And Team Building To Improve Retention, Jeanette Black
Coaching Nurse Leaders In Conflict Management And Team Building To Improve Retention, Jeanette Black
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Abstract
Problem: Retention of assistant nurse managers (ANMs) was identified as a concern from interviews with executive leadership and ANMs employed at a large hospital within a Northern California integrated health system. The nurse leader orientation training was reviewed, with gaps identified in conflict management and team building.
Context: The attrition rate of U.S. nurse managers in 2010 was 8.3%, higher than executive nurse leaders, with replacement costs equal to 75% - 125% of a nurse manager’s salary (Loveridge, 2017). Employee turnover and dissatisfaction due to conflict can have detrimental effects on retention, productivity, morale, and quality of patient care. …
Burnout, Depression And Suicide Prevention For Nursing Staff In High-Intensity Settings, April Ritchie
Burnout, Depression And Suicide Prevention For Nursing Staff In High-Intensity Settings, April Ritchie
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Nurses working in high-intensity settings experience burnout at higher rates than in other nursing areas. Burnout in healthcare is a problem estimated as high as 70% by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Burnout can lead to depressive symptoms, which can lead to suicidal ideation in affected healthcare providers, which makes early identification and treatment of utmost importance to the mental and physical wellbeing of these nurses.
The purpose of this project is to examine burnout in nursing staff working in high-intensity areas of the hospital in order to help identify burnout and/or depressive symptoms before they lead to …

Decreasing Environmental Health Risks In The Philippines: Implementation Of A Culturally Appropriate Screening Tool, Alyssa Samson
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Objectives: The purpose of this DNP project was to increase the knowledge of environmental health risk factors in the Philippines among nurses and doctors located within that healthcare system. The overall goal was to educate providers on local environmental health risks, provide training for the use of a screening tool (Tagalog Environmental Health and Safety Assessment Tool [TEHSAT]), and provide resources aimed at increasing screening of at risk populations and provide opportunities for education and health promotion.
Methods: This project included a two-part educational training session. The first part included a preliminary presentation on environmental health and the use of …
Evidence-Based Verbal De-Escalation Techniques For The Family Nurse Practitioner: Education And Simulation, Rachael K. Misitano
Evidence-Based Verbal De-Escalation Techniques For The Family Nurse Practitioner: Education And Simulation, Rachael K. Misitano
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Background: Healthcare workers are 4 times more likely to be exposed to workplace violence than workers employed in private industry, with assault rates as high as 7.8 per 10,000 workers. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health defines workplace violence as “violent acts, including physical assaults, and or threats of assault, directed toward persons at work or on duty” (OSHA, 2015, p. 2). Verbal de-escalation techniques that assist with care of the agitated patient are not routinely taught to Family Nurse Practitioners (FNPs) throughout their years of advanced coursework, yet it is something they are likely to encounter …
