Promoting Mental Health And Well-Being Among Undergraduate Nursing Students: A Practice Guideline, Armen Mailyan Apr 2024

Promoting Mental Health And Well-Being Among Undergraduate Nursing Students: A Practice Guideline, Armen Mailyan

DNP Scholarly Projects

Poor mental health and well-being among undergraduate nursing students negatively affects social dynamics, communication, decision making, and stress management, thus compromising the quality of healthcare delivery and patient care outcomes. It is imperative that nursing programs support students to develop positive self-care, resilience, and mental health skills while in school to foster their well-being, enhance their academic success, and to promote high-quality, patient-centered care in their future practice. The purpose of this Doctor of Nurse Practice (DNP) project was to develop a mental health and well-being practice guideline with a comprehensive set of evidence-based interventions for academic nursing programs to …

Safe Staffing, Safe Patients Benchmark Project, Sarah Barton Aug 2023

Safe Staffing, Safe Patients Benchmark Project, Sarah Barton

MSN Capstone Projects

With the most recent pandemic, nurses have been overworked, overwhelmed, and understaffed at dangerous levels. Nurses are leaving full time employment at this facility in droves to seek better wages through traveling. In turn, our patient outcomes have taken a large hit, with an increase in falls, pressure ulcers, and catheter-acquired urinary tract infections, to name a few. This is costly for the hospital, not to mention the damper it puts on the hospital’s vision and goals. With the implementation of a nursing incentive program, the hospital could cut overall spending in half within 2 years with an investment of …

Civility And Communication Interventions To Improve Patient Outcomes, Lane Denney May 2022

Civility And Communication Interventions To Improve Patient Outcomes, Lane Denney

The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing Undergraduate Honors Theses

Communication in health care is vital for the successful care of patients and their outcomes while they are hospitalized. Healthcare workers are responsible for communicating patient information whether it is between change of shifts or reporting to a patient’s provider. It is important that this information is communicated effectively. This review evaluates how nurses communicate in shift- report and how this affects patient outcomes and civility between nursing units and teams. Overall, bedside shift reports promoted the best patient outcomes and increased teamwork on hospital units.

Boarding Barriers For Psychiatric Patients In Emergency Departments, Emmeline B. Martin Bsn, Rn, Alison Rossano Bsn, Rn, Diana Dedmon Dnp, Aprn, Fnp-Bc Apr 2022

Boarding Barriers For Psychiatric Patients In Emergency Departments, Emmeline B. Martin Bsn, Rn, Alison Rossano Bsn, Rn, Diana Dedmon Dnp, Aprn, Fnp-Bc

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Objective To identify past or current literature about emergency department holds and psychiatric patients consisting of the evaluation of patient outcomes, satisfaction and equity of care. It is already known that shorter boarding times from the emergency department to a psychiatric unit have positive patient outcomes such as a decrease in readmissions, increase in patient satisfaction and efficiency in appropriate treatment.

Method A scoping review to analyze data by grouping articles into themes which included authors, date of publication, aims/purpose, methodology, sample, interventional details, and the key findings in each article. Excluded articles included those discussing COVID-19 and case management. …

Communicating Comfort In Crisis: A Literature Review On Overcoming The Emergency Room Environment To Foster The Nurse-Patient Relationship, Faith G. Davenport Apr 2022

Communicating Comfort In Crisis: A Literature Review On Overcoming The Emergency Room Environment To Foster The Nurse-Patient Relationship, Faith G. Davenport

Senior Honors Theses

The average emergency room patient is not receiving the compassionate nurse-patient communication that patients experience on other hospital floors. Fewer positive nurse-patient interactions prompt patients to state that they feel uncomforted and dissatisfied on hospital exit surveys, inciting hospital management to investigate how to reverse this trend to retain their federal funding. Emergency room nurses cite multiple barriers inherent in their work environment that prevent them from building rapport with their patients, including a layout not conducive to private conversations, strict time constraints, and a fluctuating workload. Working for a prolonged period under these conditions is driving many nurses to …

Leader Empowering Behaviour As A Predictor Of Nurse And Patient Outcomes, Karen Cziraki Jan 2020

Leader Empowering Behaviour As A Predictor Of Nurse And Patient Outcomes, Karen Cziraki

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Nursing leadership remains a critical factor during healthcare transformation. Nurse leaders who promote healthy working conditions have been associated with positive nurse and unit outcomes. However, mechanisms to explain how they influence outcomes are not understood (Cummings et al., 2018). Conger and Kanungo’s (1988) Process Model of Empowerment provided a framework to examine how leader empowering behaviour (LEB) influenced experienced nurses’ self-efficacy (SE), interprofessional collaboration (IPC), job turnover intentions (JTI) and nurse-assessed adverse patient outcomes (NAAE).

A non-experimental predictive design and structural equation modelling techniques in Mplus were used to conduct a secondary analysis of experienced registered nurses’ data ( …

Clinical Research in Practice: The Journal of Team Hippocrates

We describe the patient experience with remote video monitoring on a general practice inpatient floor in the hospital. We raise questions about unexplored areas relevant to this practice.

The Relationship Between Perceptions Of Patient Safety Culture, Nurse Advocacy, And Nurse Sensitive Patient Outcomes, Margaret Dicuccio May 2018

The Relationship Between Perceptions Of Patient Safety Culture, Nurse Advocacy, And Nurse Sensitive Patient Outcomes, Margaret Dicuccio

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to understand relationships between and among patient safety culture, nurse reported attitude toward patient advocacy and key patient outcomes. Nurses play an integral role in patient safety, providing care through constant interaction with the patient and clinical team. Advocating for patients is part of that role; however little research existed that explored how advocacy was related to the safety culture or specific patient outcomes.

A correlational cross-sectional design was chosen for this secondary data analysis. Correlation and regression models were applied to medical/surgical unit data from seven facilities within one hospital system. Sources of …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Objectives:

The aim of this study was to assess the impact of adding assistants in nursing to acute care hospital ward nurse staffing on adverse patient outcomes using administrative health data.

Design:

Logistic regression modelling was used with linked administrative health data to examine the association between seven adverse patient outcomes and use of assistants in nursing utilising a pre-test/ post-test design. Outcomes included were in-hospital 30-day mortality, failure to rescue, urinary tract infection, pressure injury, pneumonia, sepsis and falls with injury.

Setting:

Eleven acute care metropolitan hospitals in Western Australia. Sample: Patients were retained in the dataset if they …

Effects Of Work Environments On Nursing And Patient Outcomes, Nancy M. Purdy Jan 2011

Effects Of Work Environments On Nursing And Patient Outcomes, Nancy M. Purdy

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Nurses are leaving the profession due to high levels of job dissatisfaction arising from current working conditions characterized by heavy workloads, limited participation in decision making and lack of development opportunities (Canadian Health Services Research Foundation [CHSRF], 2006a). To gain organizational support for workplace improvements and thereby improve nursing retention, evidence is needed to demonstrate the impact of the work environment on patient care. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between nurses' perceptions of their work environment and the quality and risk outcomes for both the patient and the nurse. Kanter's (1977, 1993) theory of structural …
