Department of Medical Oncology Faculty Papers
Purpose: The association between depression and chronic pain is well established. However, few studies have examined the pathways from depression to chronic pain. The present cross-cultural study aimed to test the mediating effects of pain catastrophizing on associations between depression and chronic pain (eg, pain severity, pain intensity) among Korean American elderly.
Patients and Methods: A total of 132 elderly Korean Americans with chronic pain were recruited from elderly daycare centers and Korean ethnic churches in the community. For mediation analyses, structural equation modeling with full information maximum likelihood estimation method was used. The bias-corrected bootstrap confidence interval (CI) method …

What's the Problem?
As increasing numbers of Covid-19 patients were admitted to the hospital, multiple Med-Surg and Telemetry units were needed to provide care. All healthcare providers noted difficulty in communicating patient plans of care across multiple units and multiple teams. Providers, Clinical Nurses, and Nursing leadership all noted differences in processes for care and communication among units and teams.

Background: Endometriosis is a serious yet understudied medical condition impacting millions of women worldwide.
Methods: This mixed methods study aimed to understand health care provider perceptions and patient experiences with endometriosis in the United States. Providers were surveyed to assess their understanding of disease prevalence. A subset of providers also participated in short, open-ended interviews about treating patients who have or are suspected to have endometriosis. Interviews were also conducted with women diagnosed with endometriosis to understand their experiences with the disease. Means and frequencies were calculated for survey data; interviews were transcribed and separately analyzed by two coders using …

Decisions made about timing of discharge can be subjective. Definitions of significant bradycardia are multiple, and interventions are variable.
This necessitates an informed discussion with parents about the natural course of apnea, bradycardia and reflux.
The physiology of gastroesophageal reflux and respiratory control have intermingled confounding variables.
Critical thinking is required to educate and support families, however a paucity of research exists. Risks and benefits of pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic interventions should be evaluated.
Nurses need increased confidence in understanding how to approach the preterm infant with apnea and/or reflux as well as how to interact with families to support discharge …

The Medicine Forum
I turned faint and weary as the page came through "Your patients heart rate is one hundred eighty" My legs shook as I ran up the stairs Thoughts racing a mile a minute, hoping someone more knowledgeable might be there first As I turned a corner, color draining from my face Then I spot my savior, the nurse, holding a syringe filled with the medication I knew now my patient and I were in good hands.

There is a lack of research related to return to work (RTW) after acute ischemic stroke. Historically considered a disease of the elderly, acute ischemic stroke studies have not routinely used return to work as an outcome. Major stroke trials have not routinely collected this data as an endpoint. However, the mean age for acute ischemic stroke (AIS) has declined to 69 years of age, while the incidence in patients under the age of 55 has increased to 19%1-3. Changes in retirement age have also affected RTW as a consideration in stroke patients. Failure to RTW after recovery …

APPROACH TO PROBLEM SOLVING
High priority index questions from HCAHPS and Press Ganey surveys, including overall ratings, communication with RNs and MDs, hospital environment and response to concerns and complaints, were targeted for improvement. These high priority indices served as the basis for redesigning Patient Services using a multi-faceted approach to improve patients’ experiences.
At Thomas Jefferson University Hospital (TJUH), high performance on the Patient Experiences of Care Survey has been driven by a successful multi-tiered approach to patient services:
·Hospital leadership guided and implemented new approaches to ensure excellence in patient services is an ever-present and obtainable goal
·Physician …

Warfarin has been a mainstay of therapy for treatment and prevention of venous thromboembolic disease (VTED) and prevention of stroke and systemic embolism for over 50 years. Recent FDA approval of several novel oral anticoagulants has offered more extensive treatment options for management of these disease states.
The availability of the novel anticoagulants offers an attractive alternative to warfarin therapy for patients due to their convenience of use. In comparison to warfarin, dabigatran, rivaroxaban and apixaban offer: - a fixed dosage regimen
- a relatively small potential drug interaction profile
- minimal laboratory monitoring
- little to no dietary restrictions. …
