Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC), often referred to as skin-to-skin contact, is an intervention for preterm and low birth weight infants, involving the practice of the mother or caregiver holding the newborn against their bare chest (Cleveland Clinic, 2023). This is a cost-effective and natural way to enhance health outcomes such as temperature regulation, weight gain, respiratory function, pain mitigation, and facilitation of breastfeeding for the neonate (Jefferies et al., 2012).

This project aims to increase the confidence of nurses using birthing positions to aid with mobility to assist with fetal descent and decrease the duration of labor in the first and second stages of labor. Lack of mobility and increased duration of labor are associated with the use of cesarean sections, which is an invasive surgery with potential complications. A knowledge gap in a South Bay Area hospital exists in current evidence-based birthing positions. Recent evidence shows that flexible sacrum positions, which are any upright positions that take the weight off the sacrum, promote vaginal deliveries, and improve birthing outcomes. …

Simulation is a critical component of nursing education. It provides a safe environment to practice and evaluate skills, supplements clinical hours, and removes barriers to a well-rounded education. Nurses are expected to be educators as part of our scope of practice, and simulation can facilitate this. One topic of nursing importance is lactation education, as breastfeeding has been shown to have multiple benefits for both mother and baby. Pre-eclampsia can be a serious development for both mother and fetus during pregnancy. Increased mortality and morbidity rates have been shown in women diagnosed with pre-eclampsia. Higher education for registered nurses on a Women’s Urgent Care (WUC) center will help diagnose the mother more quickly and inevitably receive treatment sooner leading to better outcomes for the birth of her newborn. A large proportion of infants admitted to neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) have genetic conditions. NICU nurses play an important role in providing comprehensive care to these patients and their families. Previous research has demonstrated gaps exist in the genetics knowledge of nurses and that they lack comfort applying genetics information to clinical practice, but no research has been done assessing the knowledge of or comfort with genetics of NICU nurses specifically. NICU nurses (n=122) completed an online survey assessing their perceived knowledge of genetics, comfort with clinical scenarios involving genetics, and desired genetics education. Clinical judgment, one’s ability to think like a nurse, is an essential skill for safe nursing practice. With the rise of simulation to replace clinical experiences, there is limited evidence regarding the effectiveness of simulation on the development of clinical judgment. This study explored differences in clinical judgment in maternal–newborn courses between undergraduate nursing students participating exclusively in simulation and those participating in hospital-based clinical experiences. Following completion of the clinical rotation, students participated in an evaluative maternal–newborn high-fidelity simulation experience that was recorded and evaluated using the Lasater’s Clinical Judgment Rubric (2007). The purpose of this project is to enhance the clinical nurse leader (CNL) nursing students’ learning experiences through simulation education, ensure that their learning outcomes meet course objectives, and increase students’ recognition of educational best practices in simulation.

This summer semester, the number of students in the obstetric course doubled and the course was changed from four scenarios held over two simulation days for four pre-licensure students each class to five simulation days with eight to ten students in attendance each class period.
