Information Literacy Training To Improve Nursing Care At The Bedside: Librarian Participation In An Evidence-Based Practice Pilot And Beyond., Basia Delawska-Elliott

Objectives: To support hospital-based nursing education programs, teaching information literacy to enhance evidence-based practice and promote nursing research.

Methods: Health sciences librarians are increasingly involved in educational programs designed to introduce evidence-based practice concepts to nurses. When a pilot Evidence-Based Boot Camp was proposed at Providence St. Vincent, a 4-time Magnet-designated hospital, the librarian was asked to join the instructor and mentor panel. The librarian’s contribution consisted of co-presenting the introduction to EBP, searching literature and appraising the evidence; providing tailored hands-on small-group search training; and helping nurse teams apply the evidence to EBP projects. The purpose of this study was to determine if labyrinth
walking in an academic library would reduce library user stress
and promote relaxation. A non- equivalent control group design
was employed. Systolic blood pressure was significant for time effect
(effect size of .136, and power .721). Pulse rate was significant for
time effect (effect size 0.93, and power .507). Satisfaction survey
results demonstrated increased satisfaction after labyrinth walking.
Data from this pilot will form the basis of a larger scale study to
determine the effect of labyrinth walking on stress particularly in
high-stress learning environments.

The importance of regular physical activity to overall health has been well established, yet adults in the United States are leading increasingly sedentary lives. Research suggests that lowering perceived barriers to exercise is an effective strategy for encouraging physical activity. This article describes the top barriers that emerged from a qualitative analysis of message board traffic from a three-month healthy lifestyle intervention that promoted physical activity and healthy eating. Researchers at a mid-sized, Midwest, faith-based university used a quasi-experimental non-equivalent control group pretest posttest design to gather data from newly enrolled nursing students in a baccalaureate, masters and doctorate in nursing practice program. Literature regarding confidence levels, self-efficacy and information literacy skills was reviewed. Specific tools to assess confidence and self-efficacy of information literacy skills were explored. The 28-item Information Literacy Self-Efficacy Scale (ILSES) developed in 2006 by Serap Kurbanoglu was used in fall 2012, spring 2013 and fall 2013 to gather data from over 200 newly enrolled nursing students. Background

An expectation of baccalaureate nursing education is to prepare nurses to implement evidenced-based practice (EBP). This expectation extends far beyond a basic understanding of the research process. BSN prepared nurses must be able to effectively and efficiently identify, analyze, and synthesize evidence (AACN, 2008). The acquisition of information literacy skills is foundational to the development of EBP.

The study took place at a College of Nursing within a mid-sized, faith-based university located in the Midwest. Objective: The overall objective of this review is to quantitatively measure the psychometric properties and the feasibility of caregiver burden screening tools. The more specific objectives were to determine the reliability, validity as well as feasibility of tools that are used to screen for caregiver burden and strain. Inclusion criteria: This review considered international quantitative research papers that addressed the psychometric properties and feasibility of caregiver burden screening tools. Search strategy: The search strategy aimed to find both published and unpublished studies from 1980-2007 published only in the English language.
