Context: A 40-bed Emergency Department (ED) in the East San Francisco Bay area of Northern California and the first site among all acute care hospitals in the organization to implement the Brief Confusion Assessment Method (bCAM) delirium scoring tool within the Electronic Health Record (EHR).

Interventions: An EHR toolkit for delirium screening using bCAM was developed, tested, and implemented in the ED.

Postoperative delirium impacts as many as 51% of surgical patients, resulting in increased mortality and morbidity, longer hospital stays, and increased healthcare costs. Adults ≥ 65 have a high risk for developing delirium. This scoping review examines the use of dexmedetomidine in the perioperative period in adults ≥ 65 years old to prevent and treat postoperative delirium.

Falls among older adults is a major issue that has become a leading cause of injuries and deaths. This study is an evaluation of fall-risk assessment using the Stopping Elderly Accidents, Deaths & Injuries (STEADI) tool and physical activity intervention in older adults aged 65 and above during their annual wellness visits to reduce fall-related injuries and hospitalizations. The results showed a reduction of fall-related injuries by up to 11.8% after the 12-week intervention. Patients with moderate-to-high fall risk saw a decrease in injury by 12.9%. Associate healthcare costs are between $9.1-$11.6 billion per year in the United States. The cost of individual patient care was estimated between $20,900 and $151,700 per pressure injury. Through this agency, projects were completed based on identified needs of the Aging in Place and CAPABLE programs. The Aging in Place (AIP) program provides critical home repairs to low-income adults aged 60 years and older. The CAPABLE program provides the same critical home repairs along with a select number of visits from a registered nurse and an occupational therapist to help the older adults age in place safely.
