Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Purpose/Background

Delirium is a prevalent challenge among ICU patients, impacting approximately 30% of admissions (Brennan et al., 2023). If left untreated, delirium can increase use of restraints, hospital length of stay, intensive care unit length of stay, and ultimately, morbidity and mortality. This scoping review assesses the Confusion Assessment Method for the Intensive Care Unit (CAM-ICU) to gauge its efficacy in reducing the length of stay in the ICU for adult patients with delirium.

Methods

A literature review from 2018 and 2023, using PubMed, CINAHL, and Medline were utilized for the search along with key words such as: length of …

The purpose of this literature review is to discuss moral distress in critical care nursing and how it affects a nurse’s ability to provide quality care. Furthermore, this review will determine factors contributing to moral distress and potential interventions …

Early Mobilization In Critical Care: A Benchmark Study, Monica Paige Voelkel Aug 2023

Early Mobilization In Critical Care: A Benchmark Study, Monica Paige Voelkel

MSN Capstone Projects

Critically ill patients often have complex injuries to multiple organ systems creating barriers to mobilization and a decrease in functional status (Bergbower et al., 2020). Early mobilization (EM) in hospitalized patients has shown to improve patient outcomes and decrease length of stay (LOS) (Bergbower et al., 2020). The link between EM and LOS is one that warrants further investigation with the PICOT question: In critically ill patients (P), how does early mobilization (I), compared to standard mobility (C) improve patient outcomes (O) over a three-month period (T)? The purpose of this paper is to discuss the rationale for the benchmark …

Icu Cauti Incidence Reduction, Michelle Gamble

Nursing Posters

Situation:

Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infection (CAUTI) rates in the adult Intensive Care Unit (ICU) increased from nine infections in FY21 to 18 in FY22.

Backgroud:

CAUTIs are the most reported healthcare acquired infection. It is important for healthcare providers to understand the complications and effects of CAUTIs. CAUTIs contribute to extended length of stay, increased healthcare costs, and patient morbidity and mortality.

Most CAUTIs are directly related to inadequate urinary catheter care. Evidence based practice demonstrates a decrease in CAUTIs related to the use of Theraworx® Protect wipes twice daily (BID) and as needed (PRN) for patients with a …

Methods: The National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database 2016 was used to identify patients requiring IMV. Mortality was the dependent variable. Independent variables had four major categories. First, patients’ …

Assessment Of Intensive Care Family Satisfaction, Jami Burnette Jan 2020

Assessment Of Intensive Care Family Satisfaction, Jami Burnette

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

There continues to be an unknown factor in knowing true patient and family satisfaction within the intensive care unit (ICU) setting. Current literature reveals surveys used to measure patient satisfaction do not pertain to the ICU setting. Patients often do not remember the ICU stay due to critical illness and are unable to actively participate with care. Families act as surrogates, are included in patient care, and collaborate with nursing and medical teams to help make care decisions. Families are integral in the patient care process and are vital members of the health care team. Even though families are included …

Meta-Regression: Prognostic Models As Objective Predictors Of Mortality Among Icu Cancer Patients, Sheila Donnell

Nursing Theses and Dissertations

Cancer patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) may be experiencing complications of disease or treatment-related effects. While acute complications related to disease and/or its therapeutic management vary in severity, the approach to ICU-centered care is complicated by actual versus perceived risks of poor outcomes. Prognostic models that inform clinical judgment of nurses and physicians may prove helpful in this population. The Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II (APACHE II), Simplified Acute Physiology Score II (SAPS II) and Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) are ICU-based models predicting 30-day mortality among the general ICU population. Although studies have been …
