Context: Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) students conducted a microsystem assessment on the ED at Hospital A, located within the greater San Francisco Bay Area. This microsystem, equipped with 115 nurses and 44 rooms, consists of an acuity of care for urgent to life-threatening medical conditions, including sepsis.

Problem: This quality improvement project aims to increase SEP-1 sepsis bundle compliance among nursing staff at a 16-bed emergency department through targeted continual staff education on sepsis screening and best practices. Currently, the unit is experiencing cases of sepsis fallout and is not meeting the 90% threshold on three treatment metrics as defined by the institutional sepsis bundle time goals. The staff in the emergency department (ED) is especially prone to these workplace violence events due to patients arriving in such unpredictable states. Alarmingly, most medical staff members report experiencing some type of workplace violence, whether that is verbal, physical, or sexual violence. The former director of the Parkland ED sent out a survey to the ED staff regarding workplace violence. More than half of the patients in the ICU require IMV within the first 24 hours after ICU admission. This project aimed to evaluate and predict the mortality rate of hospitalized patients on IMV by examining their risk factors, such as patient demographic characteristics, disease status, social environment, and discharge status.

In 2017, several hospitals in Ontario implemented the Electronic Canadian Triage and Acuity Scale (eCTAS). This new technology affects a critical area of the Emergency Department: triage. There is no research on Registered Nurses’ (RNs) perceptions of eCTAS. A quantitative non-experimental descriptive survey obtained and quantified RN perceptions of eCTAS at a hospital with a 23 bed Emergency Department. The Diffusion of Innovation Theory was used as the theoretical framework to help guide study development. Introduction: Although death is common in emergency departments, there is limited research regarding ED design as an obstacle to end-of-life care. This study identifies emergency nurses’ recommendations regarding ways designs have negative or positive impact on care for dying patients and their families.

Methods: A 25-item questionnaire was sent to a national random sample of 500 emergency nurses. Inclusion criteria were nurses who could read English, worked in emergency departments, and had cared for at least 1 patient at the end of life (EOL). Responses were individually reviewed and coded.

Emergency Department (ED) staff are repeatedly exposed to high stress situations and as a result suffer from compassion fatigue, secondary traumatic stress, symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, burnout and high turnover rates. Staff turnover is costly to the health system in the form of training new staff and potential poor patient outcomes due to under staffing or inexperience of staff. Based on a survey about debriefing, Level 1 Adult and Pediatric Emergency Department staff reported 81% felt there was inadequate support for critically stressful events that occur.
