Delirium in intensive care unit (ICU) patients can lead to increased length of stay in the hospital, increased risk of complications, increased polypharmacy, family distress and increased rate of mortality (Vasilevskis et al., 2018). Research has shown that addressing modifiable risk factors can improve survival rate by up to 15%, and routine screening for delirium in ICU patients leads to decreased patient anxiety, reduced in-hospital mortality, early recognition, and treatment of delirium (Krewulak et al., 2021 ; Vasilevskis et al., 2018). Burnout has affected nurses nationally and globally for decades. Burnout in nurses is characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and lack of feelings of personal accomplishment. Consequences of burnout include physical and emotional suffering in nurses, poorer patient outcomes, and lost revenue and increased cost in healthcare organizations. Background

Pain assessments in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) are crucial to recovery, the discharge process, patient outcomes, length of stay, and readmission rates. It is one of the main responsibilities of PACU nurses to adequately assess and treat pain when patients are in phase one and two of recovery after surgery. A thorough and accurate pain assessment tool is needed for these critically ill patients because not all of them are able to verbally express discomfort.

A literature search using PubMed and CINHAL was conducted and fourteen published articles between 2012-2023 were included in this review. This evidence-based project sought to evaluate the practice change of routine GRV elimination within a 14 bed adult intensive care unit (ICU) at a large teaching hospital in the southeastern United States. For decades, the gold standard to determine tolerance to enteral nutrition (EN) has been routine GRV assessments via aspiration. However, recent studies have concluded the practice ineffective. Critical Care guidelines published in 2016 now recommend cessation of routine GRV assessments (Ozen, et. al, 2018). This improvement project took place on the Critical Care Unit (CCU) of a non-profit hospital in Northern California. The unit houses 54 beds, employs over 210 employees, and houses the facility’s central cardiac monitoring station which utilizes unit staff. The objective was to improve patient safety through reducing the risk of alarm fatigue by decreasing the total number of clinical alarms on the unit.
