Return To Work After Stroke: A Nursing State Of The Science., Catherine Harris, Phd, Mba, Crnp Sep 2014

Return To Work After Stroke: A Nursing State Of The Science., Catherine Harris, Phd, Mba, Crnp

College of Nursing Faculty Papers & Presentations

There is a lack of research related to return to work (RTW) after acute ischemic stroke. Historically considered a disease of the elderly, acute ischemic stroke studies have not routinely used return to work as an outcome. Major stroke trials have not routinely collected this data as an endpoint. However, the mean age for acute ischemic stroke (AIS) has declined to 69 years of age, while the incidence in patients under the age of 55 has increased to 19%1-3. Changes in retirement age have also affected RTW as a consideration in stroke patients. Failure to RTW after recovery …

Effects Of An Apn-Led Amiodarone Clinic On Adherence To Recommended Monitoring Guidelines, Melissa Bartoszewicz May 2014

Effects Of An Apn-Led Amiodarone Clinic On Adherence To Recommended Monitoring Guidelines, Melissa Bartoszewicz

Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports

Evidence shows that patients receiving amiodarone therapy have not adhered to monitoring guidelines set forth by the Heart Rhythm Society. Uncertainty with responsibility for monitoring has led to the development of pharmacist-managed or multidisciplinary-managed outpatient amiodarone clinics. Some limitations have been identified in the pharmacist-managed outpatient clinics that may be overcome by advanced practice nurse (APN)-managed clinics. The purpose of this EBP project was to determine what effects an APN-led amiodarone clinic would have on adherence to amiodarone monitoring guidelines. Using the PICOT format, the clinical question was developed: Does enrollment in an amiodarone clinic compared with “usual care” change …

Epidemiology and Environmental Health Faculty Publications

Background: Perceived control has been suggested as a modifiable factor associated with health-related quality of life (HRQOL). However, the relationship between perceived control and HRQOL has not been evaluated in patients with heart failure (HF). The purpose of this study was to determine whether perceived control independently predicts HRQOL in HF patients. Methods: A total of 423 HF patients were included. Hierarchical linear regression was performed to determine the independent association of perceived control to HRQOL after controlling for covariates. Results: Higher levels of perceived control were associated with better HRQOL in univariate analysis. However, this relationship was strongly attenuated …

Medication Adherence And Intervention To Create Success In Hypertensive African Americans In A Rural Setting, Laneita Davis Apr 2014

Medication Adherence And Intervention To Create Success In Hypertensive African Americans In A Rural Setting, Laneita Davis

DNP Scholarly Projects

Hypertension is a chronic disease that has been a major problem in the African American community for decades. Although numerous research studies have examined interventions to combat this disease, there has been very little research published that focused on African Americans with hypertension in a rural setting. Rural residents experience many difficulties in accessing healthcare services. This difficult access is a disadvantage that results in higher morbidity and mortality rates compared to those of their urban counterparts. Being from a small town in Mississippi, I have witnessed first hand the many barriers that are encountered. Individuals who live in a …

Self-Care Of Heart Failure In A House Call Program, Becky Bryant Jan 2014

Self-Care Of Heart Failure In A House Call Program, Becky Bryant

Doctor of Nursing Practice Program Projects

The incidence and prevalence of persons living with heart failure (HF) is growing in the United States. Heart failure is the most common admission in hospitals among Medicare recipients aged 65 years or older. Self-care of heart failure (SCHF) has been reported to decrease HF hospital admission rates. Elderly patients who are homebound do not have access to typical HF education and follow-up care. The purpose of this evidence-based practice (EBP) project was to implement a SCHF program intervention by nurse practitioners (NPs) with homebound elderly HF patients receiving home visits in a house call program. There were 18 sample …

Assessing Prevalence Of Known Risk Factors In A Regional Central Kentucky Medical Center Heart Failure Population As An Approach To Assessment Of Needs For Development Of A Program To Provide Targeted Services To Reduce 30 Day Readmissions, Christeen Ivy Broaddus Jan 2014

Assessing Prevalence Of Known Risk Factors In A Regional Central Kentucky Medical Center Heart Failure Population As An Approach To Assessment Of Needs For Development Of A Program To Provide Targeted Services To Reduce 30 Day Readmissions, Christeen Ivy Broaddus

DNP Projects

Abstract

Objectives:

  1. Determine demographic, physiologic, and laboratory characteristics at time of admission of the heart failure (HF) population in a regional acute care facility in Central Kentucky through review of patient electronic medical records.
  2. Determine which HF population characteristics are significantly associated with readmissions to the hospital.
  3. Provide identification of the statistically significant common characteristics of the HF population to this facility so that they may work towards development of an electronic risk for readmission predictive instrument.

Design: Retrospective chart review.

Setting: Regional acute care facility in Central Kentucky.

Participants: All patients (n = 175) with a diagnosis or history …
