Perianesthesia Discourses On Directives Limiting Care: A Foucauldian Case Study, Joshua Brian Hardin
Perianesthesia Discourses On Directives Limiting Care: A Foucauldian Case Study, Joshua Brian Hardin
Theses and Dissertations
Current practice recommendations suggest mandatory reconsideration of pre-existing Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) orders and other directives limiting care when adults undergo surgery with anesthesia. However, many perianesthesia clinicians believe that these policies are inappropriate and difficult to implement, and patients may have unclear expectations about anesthesia, creating discord between patients and clinicians. Research about what discourses dominate how patients and clinicians talk about advanced directives in the perianesthesia setting, and how those discourses relate to power-knowledge is limited. This inquiry, guided by the emancipatory theory of compassion, used Foucauldian poststructural case study design and contextualizing analysis to explore this problem. …
Mental Health Needs Among Latina Migrant Farmworkers In The State Of Wisconsin - A Colonial Legacy, Maria Del Carmen Graf
Mental Health Needs Among Latina Migrant Farmworkers In The State Of Wisconsin - A Colonial Legacy, Maria Del Carmen Graf
Theses and Dissertations
Latinos have an increased risk for mental health problems due to several factors, including immigration, socio-economic and cultural barriers (Espeleta et al., 2019). Besides mental health risk factors such as gender, lower education attainment, and poverty (Espeleta et al., 2019), Latina migrant farmworkers also face the demands of their domestic roles, which result in work-family conflicts and stress (Arcury et al., 2018). Furthermore, persistent stigma perpetuated primarily by poor health literacy and traditional cultural perceptions and beliefs about mental health hinders their decision to seek mental health treatment (Lopez et al., 2018). To date, there are no scholarly works published …
It’S A Process: A Qualitative Study About The Resistance And Resilience Of Transgender Youth Of Color Navigating Parent/Guardian Support And Societal Oppressions, Linda Marie Wesp
It’S A Process: A Qualitative Study About The Resistance And Resilience Of Transgender Youth Of Color Navigating Parent/Guardian Support And Societal Oppressions, Linda Marie Wesp
Theses and Dissertations
Transgender youth of color experience alarming rates of marginalization and victimization within society, including experiences of rejection from parents/ guardians, which has been associated with various adverse health outcomes. Health care providers are encouraged to facilitate parent/guardian support for transgender youth to improve long term health, however nurses report feeling underprepared to care for transgender populations and nursing transgender health research is lacking. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to describe how transgender youth of color experience and navigate parent/guardian support, considering the broader societal context.
This study was informed by critical and intersectionality theory. A qualitative secondary approach …
Simulation Design Characteristics: Perspectives Held By Nurse Educators And Nursing Students, Jane Brekke Paige
Simulation Design Characteristics: Perspectives Held By Nurse Educators And Nursing Students, Jane Brekke Paige
Theses and Dissertations
Simulation based learning (SBL) is pedagogical method poised to innovate nursing educational approaches. Yet, despite a growing body of research into SBL, limited investigation exists regarding assumptions and beliefs that underpin SBL pedagogy. Even though key simulation design characteristics exist, the particular methods nurse educators use to operationalize simulation design characteristics and how these choices are viewed from the perspective of nursing students is unknown. Without understanding what motivates educators to design simulations as they do, it is difficult to interpret the evidence that exists to support chosen methods. Through the exploration of perspectives (points-of-view), underlying beliefs can be uncovered. …
The Historical Influence Of Politics And Society On Women's Experiences Of Abortion, Sandra Ruth Schumacher
The Historical Influence Of Politics And Society On Women's Experiences Of Abortion, Sandra Ruth Schumacher
Theses and Dissertations
One out of every three women in the United States will experience abortion (Guttmacher Institute, 2008). The purposes of this feminist qualitative research were to: 1) examine historically the context of legal abortion in the United States, 2) describe and explore women's experiences of abortion and 3) better understand the historical impact of the sociopolitical climate on women's perceptions of their abortion experiences. An historical review of political, legislative, and social contexts surrounding legal abortion revealed an increasingly hostile environment toward women seeking abortion since 1973. By challenging existing abortion laws in state and federal courts, anti-abortion legislators have removed …
