Is It Fair To Compare? A Patient And Family Experience Of Two Healthcare Systems And Neurosurgical Teams Within A Two-Week Period, Laura Miller Cpxp
Patient Experience Journal
As the mother of a 28-year-old son with cerebral palsy and hydrocephalus, and as a healthcare consultant focused on patient experience and professional development, I have a unique perspective and skill set. Recently he experienced symptoms that included an excruciating headache, neck pain and lethargy. Fearing his ventriculoperitoneal shunt had malfunctioned, he went to the emergency room and was later admitted on the neuro inpatient floor for a three-day hospitalization. His original shunt had been placed in 1991, and he never had an issue with until August 2018. While in the hospital, he was informed that he was no longer …
Health Information Technology (Hit) Experiences Of The Person With Heart Failure: A Descriptive Interpretive Phenomenological Mini Study, Pamela S. Kallmerten
Health Information Technology (Hit) Experiences Of The Person With Heart Failure: A Descriptive Interpretive Phenomenological Mini Study, Pamela S. Kallmerten
2019 Sigma Region 15 Nursing Research Symposium
Sufficient research has been conducted to explore the lived experience of the person with heart failure. Gap in the knowledge is in regards to the lived experience of those with repeated hospitalizations and their use of health information technology (HIT) which can support self management. Purpose of this project is to describe the lived experience of using HIT by the person with heart failure who has been readmitted to the hospital within the previous six months.
The Effect Of The Implementation Of A Quarterly Triad Tool In The Pain Clinic Setting On The Assessment And Mitigation Of Risks In Patients On Chronic Opioid Therapy, Caroline Asava
Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports
The concurrent use of opioids and benzodiazepines (BZDs poses a formidable challenge for clinicians who manage chronic pain. While the escalating use of opioid analgesics for the treatment of chronic pain and the concomitant rise in opioid-related abuse and misuse are widely recognized trends, the contribution of combination use of BZDs, alcohol, and/or other sedative agents to opioid-related morbidity and mortality is underappreciated, even when these agents are used appropriately. Patients with chronic pain who use opioid analgesics along with BZDs have a defined increase in rates of adverse events, overdose, and death, warranting close monitoring. To improve patient outcomes, …
Utilizing Simulation To Implement Cognitive Aids In The Operating Room, Kaitlyn Brown
Utilizing Simulation To Implement Cognitive Aids In The Operating Room, Kaitlyn Brown
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Background: Operating room crises require prompt, efficient action to avoid detrimental outcomes. Research shows that crisis checklists or other cognitive aids assist anesthesia providers in taking prompt action while improving efficiency by decreasing treatment steps missed during critical events.
Objectives: The purpose of this project was to evaluate the effectiveness of incorporating cardiac arrest and malignant hyperthermia crisis checklists into the operating room using high-fidelity simulation-based education.
Methods: Researchers implemented the Stanford Emergency Manual Cognitive Aids for cardiac arrest and malignant hyperthermia to anesthesia staff at a community hospital in southern Illinois with 18 participants. Implementation consisted of an education …

Correlation Between Myostatin and Lean Muscle Mass in Older Adults.
Luedders, M., Gray, M., Patton, S., Washington, T., Binns, A. Exercise Science Research Center, University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, AR.
Background: Our older adult population is growing exponentially and with it, the number of falls and debilitating injuries that afflict their population grows as well. A fall brings with it many possible injuries, healthcare costs, fear and increased mortality. There seems to be a lack of preventative measures in our healthcare system to help protect our elders. One possible measure is a simple blood test that looks at the level of …
Pain Management For Intrauterine Device Insertion And Endometrial Biopsy, Michelle Lipton-Carroll
Pain Management For Intrauterine Device Insertion And Endometrial Biopsy, Michelle Lipton-Carroll
Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports
Intrauterine device (IUD) insertions and endometrial biopsies (EMB) can be painful in office gynecological procedures. In the clinical setting used for this evidence-based project (EBP) it was noted there was no consistent pain management being used for these procedures. For this EBP project a protocol for pain management during IUD insertions and EMBs was developed and implemented into this clinical setting. The protocol was created from an exhaustive literature search, which yielded six pieces of high-level evidence of good quality. The evidence supported the use of a 1% lidocaine paracervical block prior to IUD insertion and a 2% lidocaine intrauterine …
Changing Healthcare Provider And Parent Behaviors In The Pediatric Post‐Anesthesia‐Care‐Unit To Reduce Child Pain: Nurse And Parent Training In Postoperative Stress (Np‐Tips), Brooke N. Jenkins, Michelle Fortier, Robert S. Stevenson, Mai Makhlouf, Paulina Lim, Remy Converse, Zeev N. Kain
Changing Healthcare Provider And Parent Behaviors In The Pediatric Post‐Anesthesia‐Care‐Unit To Reduce Child Pain: Nurse And Parent Training In Postoperative Stress (Np‐Tips), Brooke N. Jenkins, Michelle Fortier, Robert S. Stevenson, Mai Makhlouf, Paulina Lim, Remy Converse, Zeev N. Kain
Psychology Faculty Articles and Research
Background
Children who undergo surgery experience significant pain in the post anesthesia care unit. Nurse and parent behaviors in the post anesthesia care unit directly impact child postoperative pain. Therefore, we have developed and evaluated (Phase 1) and then tested (Phase 2) the feasibility of a new intervention (Nurse and Parent Training in Postoperative Stress) to alter parent and nurse behaviors in a way consistent with reducing child postoperative pain.
Methods
In Phase 1, a multidisciplinary team of experts (physicians, nurses, and psychologists) developed an empirically‐based intervention which was then evaluated by experienced nurses (N = 8) and parents …

Extracorporeal Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, Emily Carr
Senior Honors Theses
Extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR) is a method of resuscitation in which venoarterial (VA) extracorporeal membrane oxygenation(ECMO) is initiated during refractory cardiac arrest. ECPR promises to enhance outcomes after cardiac arrest by minimizing neurological deficits, stabilizing the patient for early reperfusion and hypothermia, and serving as a bridge to treatment or transplant. ECPR must be initiated according to structured guidelines and protocols, which are based on the patient’s age, comorbidities, code status, neurological baseline, no flow time, and low flow time.
If a patient achieves return of spontaneous circulation on ECMO, the patient will receive post cardiac arrest care which includes …

Availability and Nursing Implementation of Measurement Tools in the Co-Occurrence of Depression and Chronic Pain: An Integrative Literature Review
Ashley Thomas
Faculty Sponsor: Barbara Harris
Background: There is high correlation between chronic pain and depression. They are seen throughout the literature to interact and feedback symptoms upon each other. However, there is not a comprehensive screening tool that assess both symptoms and not a clear indication of nursing responsibility in assessment of the co-occurrence.
Objectives: The purpose of this literature review is to create a comprehensive review of current research concerning the availability of screening tools that measure the co-occurrence …

Stress Relieving Lavender Aromatherapy For Inpatient Nurses, Kaneisha Deburgo
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Lavender essential oil as a form of aromatherapy is proven to be an effective way to relieve occupational stress among nurses, providing them with a healthy self-care outlet. The purpose of this DNP project was to decrease the stress levels of inpatient nurses by implementing lavender essential oil aromatherapy as a self-care initiative. Willing inpatient Registered Nurses within a fast-paced inpatient telemetry unit were given a vial that contained three drops of Young Living lavender essential oil enclosed within at the beginning of their shifts. The nurses were asked to carry it with them during their eight-hour shifts for three …
