Gay Identity In Emerging Adulthood: Testing The Interaction Between Relational Satisfaction, Outness, And Gay Identity, Jeremy R. Goshorn

This work explored the ways in which the theoretical constructs of gay identity development, relational satisfaction, and outness interact in gay-male emerging adults. Informed by the literature on these constructs, the researcher developed a structural model to evaluate the interactive and mediating roles within the model. Three instruments were selected to assist in measuring these theoretical constructs. The Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Identity Scale (LGBIS) measured gay identity development, the Gay and Lesbian Relationship Satisfaction Scale (GLRSS) measured relational satisfaction, and the Nebraska Outness Scale (NOS) measured outness. Impacting millions of youth in the United States and across the globe, early parental death can be a very stressful and traumatic event and is an important topic to investigate. Utilizing an Eriksonian developmental perspective, this study (N = 256) examined a group of young adults who experienced a parental death during adolescence and a group of young adults who had not experienced an early parental death. The researcher examined the developmental impact of early parental death, and developed a predictive model of posttraumatic growth (PTG) for young adults who have experienced early parental death. Salud Mental: The Conceptualization And Experiences Of Mental Health Among Undocumented Mexican Immigrants, Edith Gonzalez

This research study explored how undocumented immigrants define and experience mental health. A review of literature about undocumented Latinx immigrants emphasized that even in high distress, this population underutilizes mental health services. Data were analyzed through the lens of Latinx Critical Race Theory in an effort to conceptualize the role of multiple marginalization on the mental health state of undocumented Latinx immigrants. Eight undocumented Mexican immigrants in one city in a southern state were interviewed using semi-structured, open-ended questions. A transcendental phenomenology method was used to explore how this population experiences mental health. Data analysis revealed five themes that suggest …

Acting ethically is a core facet of the counseling profession's identity, safeguarding clients from undue harm (ACA, 2005). Through an increased understanding of both detrimental and positive factors that can influence counselors' perceptions of ethical behaviors, the counseling profession can intervene accordingly; this knowledge may assist in managing the problem related to unethical infractions. However, ethical behavior is a multifaceted and complex phenomenon, leaving many factors to be explored and examined. Workplace aggression, exposure to normative unethical behaviors, and an integrated modal of morality constitute some of these factors that warrant further investigation. Jumping Off The Couch: Infusing Creativity Into Counselor Education, Christopher Lawrence

This study infused key elements of creativity into the process of counselor education, exposing students in a counseling skills and techniques course to a curriculum designed to promote tolerance for ambiguity, appropriate risk-taking behaviors, and improvisational skills. Employing a phenomenological strategy of inquiry, the researcher sought to explore the ways the participants made sense of their experience in the course, as well as the ways the experience informed their perspective of counseling and the role of a counselor. Participants recognized counseling as a profession replete with ambiguity and rife with personal and relational challenges. They came to appreciate a clinician's …

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between undergraduate students' mental health and their engagement in the educational experience. The researcher identified traditionally-aged college students (18-23) who were flourishing and distinguished them from students who were moderately mentally healthy and/or languishing according to Keyes' (2002) continuum of mental health model. Mental health was the dependent variable. Student involvement was defined as the extent to which students engage in empirically derived good educational practices as measured by the National Survey of Student Engagement's College Student Report (2005). The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of self-care training on the self-concept, self-care behavior, and metabolic control of diabetic children. The author hoped to obtain information to help improve training programs for children with diabetes.;Forty-nine diabetic children, ages eight to 13, participated in the study as they received basic self-care training from their physicians. Twenty-seven of the children also attended a week long summer day camp where they received additional instruction in diabetes self-care.;The subjects completed the Self-Perception Profile for Children and the Self-Care Questionnaire two times at a four month interval to measure their self-concept …

The purpose of this study was to examine state legislation and policy related to comprehensive, integrated services for students with serious emotional disturbance. Legislation and policy documents from nine states, Virginia (the pilot study), Indiana, Maryland, New Jersey, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Utah, Vermont, and Wisconsin, were examined. These documents were compared to a set of components extracted from the literature as recommended practice. The document analysis was confirmed through telephone interviews with state-level policymakers in each state's department of education, department of mental health, and/or department of children's services. Experienced counselors in three eastern states were surveyed about the incidence of racial issues presented by their White clients and were asked to complete the White Racial Identity Attitudes Scales (WRIAS) and to respond to a questionnaire about a White client presenting a racial issue. Nearly a quarter of the counselors responding to the survey reported having some clients raising racial issues as main issues in counseling, and 45% reported having some clients bringing up racial issues relevant to their counseling. Respondents generally did not have training to help White clients with racial issues, nor did many report having special …

The purpose of this study was to determine from a group of ending stage of treatment or post-treatment incest survivors their experience with anger before therapy, during therapy, and at present, using semi-structured interviews and the following objective measures: STAXI--State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory (Spielberger, 1988), CRI--Coping Resources Inventory (Hammer and Marting, 1988), MBTI--Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (Myers and McCaulley, 1985), a researcher-constructed outcome measure (a visual analog scale of awareness of feelings and symptom improvement) and a researcher-constructed Type-Related Anger questionnaire. Therapeutic Intervention In The Treatment Of Adult Patients With Metastatic Cancer : A Comparative Study Of Two Group Counseling Approaches, Gilbert Garner Cumbia

The purpose of this study was to analyze the efficacy of two group counseling approaches upon adult patients diagnosed with metastatic cancer since August 1, 1980. Eighteen adult outpatients from metropolitan Richmond, Virginia area hospitals were the subjects. All were volunteers and were randomly assigned, using a modified random sampling procedure, to a nondirective, stress management, or control group. Five personality characteristics were examined: state anxiety, trait anxiety, self-esteem, innerdirectedness, and time competence.;The nondirective and stress management groups met for 90 minute sessions twice a week for five consecutive weeks. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship of the presence or absence of tardive dyskinesia (TD) to drug and behavioral history variables. The author hoped to determine if there were descriptive characteristics, unique to patients with TD, which could merit further investigation as precursors of TD. Two samples, with 26 subjects each, were drawn from patients identified at Eastern State Hospital and screened by a psychiatrist. The TD and No-TD groups were matched on age, sex, and diagnosis. Entire drug histories were recorded and entire behavioral (hospitalization) histories were rated. Data collection was discontinued, for both subjects, …
