Improving Nurse Leaders' Transformational Leadership Skills In The Online Environment, Tanya Haight Aug 2022

Improving Nurse Leaders' Transformational Leadership Skills In The Online Environment, Tanya Haight

2022 Southern California Nursing Research Conference

Leadership is critical to the success of most organizations, and the achievement of an organization's goals is largely dependent on the leaders' ability to engage, motivate, and influence their teams—often referred to as Transformational Leadership. This is especially true for healthcare organizations wherein the morbidity and mortality of patients may be affected by the quality of leadership. At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, in-person meetings transitioned to the online format without nurse leaders' formal training. Leaders cited this lack of orientation as impeding their ability to sustain an online-virtual transformational leadership presence with their teams. They reported varying degrees …

Optimization Of Transfusion Administration Process: A Quality Improvement Project, Nannette Berg, Jennifer Togioka Jun 2022

Optimization Of Transfusion Administration Process: A Quality Improvement Project, Nannette Berg, Jennifer Togioka

2022 Providence Nurse Research Conference

BACKGROUND:

Transfusion of blood products (transfusion) occurs infrequently for most nurses yet is a high-risk procedure for patients. To ensure patient safety, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and The Joint Commission (TJC) created regulatory standards for transfusion administration and documentation. To meet regulatory standards, transfusion events require documentation of all six critical steps and nurse leaders must monitor compliance with regulatory transfusion documentation, taking action when rates are suboptimal. Yet, transfusion documentation in the electronic health record (EHR) has been described as fragmented, confusing, and devoid of built-in prompts to facilitate completion. Checklists can organize tasks with multiple …

High Reliability Through Charge Nurse Huddles: Improving Communication To Decrease Absenteeism, Audra Ellis Overman Jun 2022

High Reliability Through Charge Nurse Huddles: Improving Communication To Decrease Absenteeism, Audra Ellis Overman

2022 Providence Nurse Research Conference

Abstract:

It is important we show staff we as leaders are listening to their concerns and frustrations. Lack of communication with immediate supervisor is a cause of absenteeism among nurses, and that absenteeism leads to decreased quality of care, disrupted work routines, and increased workload for staff that are present. Communication is a proven tool to help develop teamwork, reduce absenteeism, and manage conflicts. Staff commitment to the workplace can be increased by management working toward a democratic style of supervision with increased open communication to decrease staff absenteeism. Absence of or poor communication creates a negative work environment and …

Employing Strategies To Increase Ebp Competency In Frontline Nurses While Aligning Nursing Skills With Current Evidence: A Quality Improvement Project, Stacey Spradling, Jamie Roney Jun 2022

Employing Strategies To Increase Ebp Competency In Frontline Nurses While Aligning Nursing Skills With Current Evidence: A Quality Improvement Project, Stacey Spradling, Jamie Roney

2022 Providence Nurse Research Conference

Background: Clinical nurses are required to demonstrate expertise for diverse patient conditions while balancing efforts to improve both staff satisfaction and clinical outcomes. Nurse leaders must implement and measure the effectiveness of strategies to empower nurses to maintain clinical competence for themselves and their peers to ensure the highest quality of evidence-based care is delivered at the earliest patient touchpoints reliably and consistently.

Purpose: The purpose of this quality improvement project was to engage direct care nurses as skills “champions” to improve the clinical skills of nurses working in a resource pool in a large urban hospital.

Methods/Approach: Clinical …

Converting Clinical Orientation Materials From Paper To Electronic: A Quality Improvement Project, Megan Bowles, Abby Lust, Teresa Bigand Jun 2022

Converting Clinical Orientation Materials From Paper To Electronic: A Quality Improvement Project, Megan Bowles, Abby Lust, Teresa Bigand

2022 Providence Nurse Research Conference

Background:

In one region including 4 hospitals, acute care nurses historically met with professional development practitioners (PDP) and received binders containing printed, specialty-specific policies and a competency checklist (required to be signed and returned to the nurse leader) upon new hire or transfer. Creating physical orientation packets is costly, time-consuming, and restricts the ability to share appropriate orientation materials in the event of a PDP sick call. Real-time communication between the orientee, preceptor, PDP, and nurse leader regarding status of the competency checklist cannot occur with a physical binder. Providing electronic onboarding materials is a potential solution.

Purpose:

To …

Mindfulness Bundle Impact On Nurse Burnout Study, Gisele Nicole Bazan, Jamie Roney, Kelsey Sawyer, Tiffany Patterson, Michelle Bradberry, Deborah Wambui Kamau, Cynthia L. Grissman, Sahar Mihandoust, Randall Stennett, Joann D. Long

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

Purpose:

Nurse burnout is a widespread problem globally. Nurse burnout is not only exacerbating nurses’ physical and mental health, but also affects patient satisfaction as well as hospital performance. Due to negative outcomes of nurse burnout, high turnover rates, and excessive costs of hiring nurses, there is a growing body of literature about factors leading to burnout and interventions to control and reduce nurse burnout. Nurses working in Intensive Care Units (ICU) designated for SARS-CoV-2 infected patients during the height of the 2020 pandemic reported experiencing higher than usual levels of emotional exhaustion (EE), depersonalization (DP), physiological signs of stress …

Barriers Identified By Nursing Leaders In Supporting Nursing Research, Marietta Sperry Apr 2022

Barriers Identified By Nursing Leaders In Supporting Nursing Research, Marietta Sperry

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

Background/Intro:

Nursing leaders at acute care hospitals often lack knowledge of how best to support nurses who wish to engage in nursing research and evidence-based practice. Inclusion of the nurses who have direct bedside contact with patients is integral in improving patient outcomes.

Problem Description-Patient facing nurses have cited a lack of leadership support in conducting research. A lack of research knowledge by nursing leaders has also previously been identified. I determined to learn other barriers nursing leaders would identify and if a brief module on basics of nursing research might mitigate these barriers.

Purpose/aims:

To determine what …

Blood Administration Documentation Audit Automation, Tonya Lawson, Harriette Lober, Andrea Nordmark

All Poster Presentations

Background: Blood administration is a high risk, low volume, complex procedure. It has strict regulatory requirements for documentation of at least 15 elements over the course of the procedure. There are frequently findings for deficient documentation during survey. Manual audits are time consuming and inaccurate. Every facility in the Providence system faces the same challenges to audit for compliance.

Problem: Detecting the rate of compliance for documentation of blood administration manually is difficult. Nursing documentation for blood administration is often incomplete. Manual audits are labor-intensive and have proven to have limited impact to increase documentation compliance.

Methods: We created an …

Implementation Of New Policy Software To Enable Quick Access To Best Practice Resources, Mary Alice Duthie, Debbie Shuster Jan 2022

Implementation Of New Policy Software To Enable Quick Access To Best Practice Resources, Mary Alice Duthie, Debbie Shuster

All Poster Presentations

Purpose: Transition to a new policy software that would enable staff to quickly as easily locate Swedish policies and provide policy authors with a practical tool to work more efficiently on policy revisions.

Background/Significance: Existing policy software for Swedish had limited search functionality that caused issues with staff not being able to locate policies quickly or easily. This outdated software had been in place from 2007 – 2021 and contained only basic operations that remained unchanged during this time. If staff had difficulty finding policies in the software then there was the potential for either relying on others on the …
