Orofacial Pain Overview: Getting Rid Of The Riddles, Andrew L. Young Jan 2017

Orofacial Pain Overview: Getting Rid Of The Riddles, Andrew L. Young

Andrew L. Young

While most pains that find their way to the dental office are dental in origin, some have less familiar roots: muscular, joint, neurological, headache, sinus or psychological. All of these roots can at times masquerade as a toothache. The purpose of this article is to alert the dentist to the select features of each root that distinguish it from the rest, resulting in efficient and appropriate treatment.

Fracture Susceptibility Of Worn Teeth, Amanda Keown, Mark Bush, James Lee, Chris Ford, Paul Constantino, Brian Lawn Sep 2012

Fracture Susceptibility Of Worn Teeth, Amanda Keown, Mark Bush, James Lee, Chris Ford, Paul Constantino, Brian Lawn

Paul J. Constantino

An experimental simulation study is made to determine the effects of occlusal wear on the capacity of teeth to resist fracture. Tests are carried out on model dome structures, using glass shells to represent enamel and epoxy filler to represent dentin. The top of the domes are ground and polished to produce flat surfaces of prescribed depths relative to shell thickness. The worn surfaces are then loaded axially with a hard sphere, or a hard or soft flat indenter, to represent extremes of food contacts. The loads required to drive longitudinal cracks around the side walls of the enamel to …

Properties Of Tooth Enamel In Great Apes, Paul Constantino, Brian Lawn, James Lee, Peter Lucas, Dylan Morris, Tanya Smith Sep 2012

Properties Of Tooth Enamel In Great Apes, Paul Constantino, Brian Lawn, James Lee, Peter Lucas, Dylan Morris, Tanya Smith

Paul J. Constantino

A comparative study has been made of human and great ape molar tooth enamel. Nanoindentation techniques are used to map profiles of elastic modulus and hardness across sections from the enamel–dentin junction to the outer tooth surface. The measured data profiles overlap between species, suggesting a degree of commonality in material properties. Using established deformation and fracture relations, critical loads to produce function-threatening damage in the enamel of each species are calculated for characteristic tooth sizes and enamel thicknesses. The results suggest that differences in load-bearing capacity of molar teeth in primates are less a function of underlying material properties …

The Long-Term Effects Of Water Fluoridation On The Human Skeleton, Debbie Chachra, H. Limeback, T. Willett, Marc Grynpas Feb 2012

The Long-Term Effects Of Water Fluoridation On The Human Skeleton, Debbie Chachra, H. Limeback, T. Willett, Marc Grynpas

Debbie Chachra

Municipal water fluoridation has notably reduced the incidence of dental caries and is widely considered a public health success. However, ingested fluoride is sequestered into bone, as well as teeth, and data on the long-term effect of exposure to these very low doses of fluoride remain inconclusive. Epidemiological studies suggest that effects of fluoride on bone are minimal. We hypothesized that the direct measurement of bone tissue from individuals residing in municipalities with and without fluoridated water would reveal a relationship between fluoride content and structural or mechanical properties of bone. However, consonant with the epidemiological data, only a weak …

Warfrin is a key element in therapy for atrial fibrillation, deep venous thrombosis (DVT), stroke (cerebrovascular accident and cardiac valve replacement . The authors searced 16,017 active clinical charts for active patients of record for the years 2009-2010. The authors found that 1.96 percent of total Marquette University Dental Clinic patients had a history of warfrin use. INR values for a significant number of dental patients are not within the therapeutic range for their medical conditions. The patients physcian was contacted for warfrin dose regulation prior to invasive dental procedures.

Background aims. Dental pulp stromal cells (DPSC) are considered to be a promising source of stem cells in the field of regenerative therapy. However, the usage of DPSC in transplantation requires large-scale expansion to cater for the need for clinical quantity without compromising current good manufacturing practice (cGMP). Existing protocols for cell culturing make use of fetal bovine serum (FBS) as a nutritional supplement. Unfortunately, FBS is an undesirable additive to cells because it carries the risk of transmitting viral and prion diseases. Therefore, the present study was undertaken to examine the efficacy of human platelet lysate (HPL) as a …

Assessment Of Patients' Level Of Satisfaction With Cleft Treatment Using The Cleft Evaluation Profile, Noor S. N., Musa S. Apr 2007

Assessment Of Patients' Level Of Satisfaction With Cleft Treatment Using The Cleft Evaluation Profile, Noor S. N., Musa S.

Sabri Musa

OBJECTIVES: Determination of the psychosocial status and assessment of the level of satisfaction in Malaysian cleft palate patients and their parents. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: Sixty cleft lip and palate patients (12 to 17 years of age) from Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia and their parents were selected. The questionnaires used were the Child Interview Schedule, the Parents Interview Schedule, and the Cleft Evaluation Profile (CEP), administered via individual interviews. RESULTS: Patients were teased because of their clefts and felt their self-confidence was affected by the cleft condition. They were frequently teased about cleft-related features such as speech, teeth, …

Mycoplasmas In Plaque And Saliva Of Children And Their Relationship To Gingivitis, Holt R. D., Wilson M., Musa S. Jan 1995

Mycoplasmas In Plaque And Saliva Of Children And Their Relationship To Gingivitis, Holt R. D., Wilson M., Musa S.

Sabri Musa

GINGIVITIS IS COMMON IN CHILDREN but its etiology is not well understood. Results of earlier studies have suggested that mycoplasmas may have a role in the disease. In this study two plaque samples and one stimulated saliva sample were taken from each of a group of sixty (60) 5 to 9 year-old children and cultured selectively for mycoplasmas. Subjects had been selected on the basis of gingival status buccal to the most posterior tooth in an upper quadrant, 20 each having scores 0, 1, or 2 at this site using the Loe and Silness index. Plaque samples were taken from …
