Admission Systems To Dental School In Europe: A Closer Look At Flanders, Tine Buyse, Filip Lievens, L. Martens
Admission Systems To Dental School In Europe: A Closer Look At Flanders, Tine Buyse, Filip Lievens, L. Martens
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Dental education in Europe faces enormous challenges. One deals with the admission to dental school. Although admission procedures vary considerably across Europe, a characteristic of some systems is that the same procedure is used across students who will ultimately pursue different majors (medical or dental). This is based on the assumptions that there is no significant difference in these students' scores and that the requirements for medicine and dentistry are equal. This study examines these assumptions in the admission exam 'Medical and Dental Studies' in Flanders. Students who pass may choose whether they start medical or dental education. Over an …

Compensating Associates For Supervising Dental Hygiene Production In U.S. General Dental Practices: A Discussion Of A Frequently Taboo Topic, David G. Dunning, Brian M. Lange, Robert Madden
Journal Articles: College of Dentistry
Many associateship employment contracts in U.S. general dental practice, probably about 85% based on our review of over 100 contracts in the past decade, are silent about a key issue in associateships-- namely, compensating associates for supervising dental hygiene production. Not addressing this issue raises ethical questions as well as concerns about professional liability regarding the supervision of dental hygiene. The associate and owner need to include in an employment agreement what compensation will be given to the associate for supervising dental hygiene production. Compensating associates for supervising dental hygiene production will certainly have a …

The human oral cavity contains a number of different habitats, including the teeth, gingival sulcus, tongue, cheeks, hard and soft palates, and tonsils, which are colonized by bacteria. The oral microbiome comprises over 600 prevalent taxa at the species level, with distinct subsets predominating at different habitats. The oral microbiome has been extensively characterized by cultivation and culture-independent molecular methods such as 16S rRNA cloning. Unfortunately, the vast majority of unnamed oral taxa are referenced by clone numbers or 16S rRNA GenBank accession numbers, often without taxonomic anchors. The first aim of this research was to collect 16S rRNA gene …

To evaluate the apoptosis involvement in the angiogenesis as a self-limiting process in patients with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) degenerated disc vessels, we assessed, by immunohistochemistry, the detection of TRAIL, its death receptor DR5 and caspase 3. TRAIL, its death receptor DR5 and caspase 3 expression were studied by immunohistochemistry in 15 TMJ discs displaced without reduction and in 4 unaffected discs. These apoptosis molecules were detected in the intima and media layers of newly formed vessels affected discs. In conclusion, vessels apoptosis activation in TMJ disc with ID could be regarded as a self-limiting process that try to leads to …

Objective This study aimed to determine the relationships between the vertical and horizontal dimensions of interproximal embrasure and the presence of interdental papilla in the maxillary anterior teeth of healthy periodontal young adults. Materials and methods One hundred and thirty-three interproximal sites of maxillary anterior teeth of 31 third year dental students of the Faculty of Dentistry, Chulalongkorn University who had healthy periodontal status, ages between 19-21 years, were examined. The presence or absence of the interdental papilla was clinically determined. Periapical radiographs were taken on each subject using individual plastic stent with 3.17 mm metal ball for reference and …

An ideal treatment outcome of pulpal exposure during restorative procedures is to regain the primary structure of tubular dentin as well as maintain the vitality and healthiness of the dental pulp. Presumably this gold standard result requires pulp capping materials with antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and dentin-pulp tissue regenerative properties. Various capping materials have been used in dentistry but none have been able to predictably induce the regeneration of underlying tubular dentin. Recently, potentially applicable tissue engineering strategies using scaffolds containing growth factors were introduced with promising results for dentin regeneration in animals, and similar approaches have been shown to be successful …

Although oral coinfections (e.g., periodontal disease) are highly prevalent in human immunodeficiency virus type 1-positive (HIV-1+) patients and appear to positively correlate with viral load levels, the potential for oral bacteria to induce HIV-1 reactivation in latently infected cells has received little attention. We showed that HIV-1 long terminal repeat (LTR) promoter activation can be induced by periodontopathogens in monocytes/macrophages; nevertheless, the mechanisms involved in this response remain undetermined. Since Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2), TLR4, and TLR9 activation have been involved in HIV-1 recrudescence, we sought to determine the role of these TLRs in HIV-1 reactivation induced by …

Facial Type Analysis Comparison Between Mri, Cbct, And Lateral Cephalometrics, Matthew A. Sanders
Facial Type Analysis Comparison Between Mri, Cbct, And Lateral Cephalometrics, Matthew A. Sanders
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Introduction: Single Cephalometric measurements are comparable between Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRl) and Conventional Lateral Cephalometric (LC) imaging methods. This study evaluated the agreement between the three imaging methods in facial type analysis (using a composite of 5 cephalometric measures).
Methods and Materials: Twenty-two subjects participated in this study. Cranial images were generated via three modalities: LC, CBCT and MRl. Cephalometric landmarks were identified on the three images per subject and a facial type analysis performed. An equally weighted facial type calculation composed of 5 cephalometric measurements (facial axis, facial depth, mandibular plane, lower face height, …
Work Of Fracture In Ceramic Bracket Bonding Systems, Tye A. Roylance
Work Of Fracture In Ceramic Bracket Bonding Systems, Tye A. Roylance
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Introduction: Work of fracture (WOE) is a method of analysis of the toughness or resilience of a bracket bonding system. It is an indication of a bracket bonding systems ability to withstand forces in the mouth below the force at which failure occurs. Work of fracture gives an indication of how much abuse the bracket/bonding system can withstand and still maintain an adequate adhesion to the tooth surface. This analysis incorporates shear bond strength and displacement and is determined in part by the elasticity and resilience of the specimen being studied.
Materials and Methods: One hundred and eighty bovine teeth …
