Collagenous Myofibroblastic Tumor Of The Mandible: Case Report Of A Unique Locally Aggressive Neoplasm, Jason W. Nash, Amy C. Hessel, Nadarajah Vigneswaran, Adel K. El-Naggar

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

We report a locally aggressive collagenous myofibroblastic neoplasm of the mandible in an 18-year-old male. Clinically, the lesion presented with rapid growth and irregular mandibular bone destruction. Grossly, the tumor was 10 cm in greatest dimension, light-tan, firm, and involving the posterior one-thirds of the body and inferior half of the left mandibular ramus. Histologically, the lesion was composed of a loose spindle cell proliferation interspersed with periodic dense bands of collagen. The spindle cells reacted positively to smooth muscle actin, calponin, and focally to desmin and were negative for S-100, pan-cytokeratin, CD99, CD34 and caldesmon, supporting myofibroblastic derivation. At …

Pulp Polyp Associated With A Natal Tooth: Case Report, Brian D. Hodgson, Rodney Vergotine, Lance Lambert

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

Natal teeth are an infrequent occurrence at birth. Often these teeth are extracted because they are very mobile and pose a risk of aspiration. This is a rare case in which a natal tooth was extracted by the pediatrician with his fingers. A root fragment remained and out of this developed a large pulp polyp. This relationship has not been previously reported.

Adding Dental Therapists To The Health Care Team To Improve Access To Oral Health Care For Children, David A. Nash

Oral Health Science Faculty Publications

Oral Health in America: A Report of the Surgeon General, and the subsequent National Call to Action to Promote Oral Health, contributed significantly to raising awareness regarding the lack of access to oral health care by many Americans, especially minority and low-income populations, with resulting disparities in oral health. The problem is particularly acute among children. The current dental workforce in the United States is inadequate to meet the oral health care needs of children. It is inadequate in terms of numbers of dentists, as well as their geographic distribution, ethnicity, education, and practice orientation. Dental therapists, paraprofessionals …

Killing Of Treponema Denticola By Mouse Peritoneal Macrophages, P. Gaibani, C. Vocale, S. Ambretti, F. Cavrini, Jacques Izard, L. Miragliotta, M. T. Pellegrino, V. Sambri Nov 2009

Killing Of Treponema Denticola By Mouse Peritoneal Macrophages, P. Gaibani, C. Vocale, S. Ambretti, F. Cavrini, Jacques Izard, L. Miragliotta, M. T. Pellegrino, V. Sambri

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

Treponema denticola has been identified as an important cause of periodontal disease and hypothesized to be involved in extra-oral infections. The objective of this study was to investigate the role of T. denticola cell length and motility during mouse peritoneal macrophages in vitro uptake. Macrophages, incubated under aerobic and anaerobic conditions, produced a similar amount of TNF-α when stimulated with Escherichia coli LPS. The uptake of FlgE- and CfpA-deficient mutants of T. denticola was significantly increased compared with the wild-type strain, due to cell size or lack of motility. Opsonization with specific antibodies considerably improved the treponemes’ uptake. …

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

The considerations for admissibility suggested by the Daubert trilogy challenge forensic experts to provide scientific support for opinion testimony. The defense bar has questioned the reliability of bitemark analysis. Under an award from the U. S. Department of Justice, via the Midwest Forensic Resource Center, a two-year feasibility study was undertaken to quantify six dental characteristics. Using two computer programs, the exemplars of 419 volunteers were digitally scanned, characteristics were measured, and frequency was calculated. The study demonstrates that there were outliers or rare dental characteristics in measurements. An analysis of the intra-observer and inter-observer consistency demonstrated a high degree …

Primary Language Spoken At Home And Children's Dental Service Utilization In The United States, Matthew Noyce, Aniko Szabo, Nicholas M. Pajewski, Scott Jackson, T. Gerard Bradley, Christopher Okunseri

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

Objective: Language barriers have been well documented as a contributing factor to disparities in the receipt of medical services, especially for Hispanic children. However, there is a paucity of information on the effect of language barriers on children's dental service utilization. We examined the association of primary language spoken at home with the receipt of preventive and routine dental care for children in the United States. Methods: We analyzed data from the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (2002-2004), which contains data on 21,049 children weighted to represent 75.8 million children nationally. Results: Among children aged 1-18 years, 13 percent spoke a …

New Tfii-I Family Target Genes Involved In Embryonic Development, Aleksandr V. Makeyev, Dashzeveg Bayarsaihan Sep 2009

New Tfii-I Family Target Genes Involved In Embryonic Development, Aleksandr V. Makeyev, Dashzeveg Bayarsaihan

SoDM Articles

Two members of the TFII-I family transcription factor genes, GTF2I and GTF2IRD1, are the prime candidates responsible for the craniofacial and cognitive abnormalities of Williams syndrome patients. We have previously generated mouse lines with targeted disruption of Gtf2ird1 and Gtf2i. Microarray analysis revealed significant changes in the expression profile of mutant embryos. Here we described three unknown genes that were dramatically down-regulated in mutants. The 2410018M08Rik/Scand3 gene encodes a protein of unknown function with CHCH and hATC domains. Scand3 is downregulated during mouse embryonic stem cell (ES) differentiation. 4933436H12Rik is a testis-specific gene, which encodes a protein with no known …

Chulalongkorn University Dental Journal

Objective To compare the cytotoxicity of two Thai white portland cements mixed with bismuth oxide (PCA and PCB) with white mineral trioxide aggregate (white ProRoot® MTA) on primary human osteoblasts and to investigate cell morphology on the materials. Materials and methods PCA, PCB and white ProRoot® MTA were mixed with distilled water. Standard cylinder discs of each tested material were prepared. Primary human osteoblasts were exposed to material extracts on different extraction time points (days 1, 3, 7 and 14). Cell viability was assessed by using methyltetrazolium assay. Differences in mean percentage of cell viability were analyzed by one-way analysis …
