Structural Conformation And Leaching From In Vitro Aged And Retrieved Invisalign Appliances, Susan Schuster, George Eliades, Spiros Zinelis, Theodore Eliades, T. Gerard Bradley

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

The objectives of this study were to investigate the structure of Invisalign appliances (Align Technology, Santa Clara, Calif) after intraoral exposure, and to qualitatively and quantitatively characterize the substances leached from the aligners after accelerated in vitro aging. Samples of Invisalign appliances were randomly selected from 10 patients before intraoral placement and after retrieval, and the prepared specimens were subjected to (1) bright-field optical reflection microscopy to study the surface morphology; (2) Fourier transform infrared microspectroscopy to characterize the in vivo changes in molecular composition induced on appliance surfaces, (3) scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis to identify …

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

Post-irradiation sarcoma is a well-defined complication of radiation therapy, yet few reports document such lesions in the head and neck. A 30-year-old man presented for evaluation of an expansile lesion of the left posterior maxilla. His medical history was significant for a childhood ocular malignancy - unilateral retinoblastoma - which was treated with a combination of surgical enucleation of the eye and external beam radiation therapy. Biopsy of his maxillary lesion revealed a spindle cell malignancy that was morphologically and immunohistochemically consistent with a diagnosis of leiomyosarcoma. Further investigation into the case revealed that the patient had three children, every …

On The Formulation Of Ph-Sensitive Liposomes With Long Circulation Times, Sérgio Simões, João Nuno Moreira, Cristina Fonseca, Nejat Düzgüneş, Maria C. Pedroso De Lima

All Dugoni School of Dentistry Faculty Articles

Strategies used to enhance liposome-mediated drug delivery in vivo include the enhancement of stability and circulation time in the bloodstream, targeting to specific tissues or cells, and facilitation of intracytoplasmic delivery. pH-sensitive liposomes have been developed to mediate the introduction of highly hydrophilic molecules or macromolecules into the cytoplasm. These liposomes destabilize under acidic conditions found in the endocytotic pathway, and usually contain phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) and titratable stabilizing amphiphiles. Formulations without PE have also been developed. Encapsulated compounds are thought to be transported into the cytoplasm through destabilization of or fusion with the endosome membrane. Incorporation of a low mole …

Depressed Type 1 Cytokine Synthesis By Superantigen-Activated Cd4+ T Cells Of Women With Human Papillomavirus-Related High-Grade Squamous Intraepithelial Lesions, Bang-Ning Lee, Michele Follen, De-Yu Shen, Anais Malpica, Karen Adler-Storthz, William T. Shearer, James M. Reuben

Journal Articles

Carcinoma of the cervix is causally related to infection with the human papillomavirus (HPV), and T cells play a pivotal role in the immune response of the host to rid itself of HPV infection. Therefore, we assessed the T-cell function of women with HPV-related cervical neoplasia against a superantigen, Staphylococcus enterotoxin B (SEB). Each woman provided a cervical brush specimen for HPV DNA testing and Papanicolaou (Pap) smears for the staging of cervical lesions. They also provided a blood specimen for determination of the ability of CD4(+) T and CD8(+) T cells to synthesize Th1 (interleukin-2 [IL-2], gamma interferon [IFN-gamma], …
