Air-Rotor Stripping In Orthodontic Treatment - A Literature Review, Udom Thongudomporn May 2004

Air-Rotor Stripping In Orthodontic Treatment - A Literature Review, Udom Thongudomporn

Chulalongkorn University Dental Journal

Air-rotor stripping was first introduced as an alternative to extraction or expansion therapy in orthodontic treatment in 1985. Since then, the technique has been variously modified for the improvement of its efficiency and the ease of use. Air-rotor stripping has been claimed to be advantageous for the relief of mild to moderate crowding without sacrificing premolars or violating the original arch dimension. However, the opinions on the drawback of the procedure, such as demineralization of the stripped enamel, periodontal complication, and so on, have been varied. It is suggested that clinicians should take precautions whenever the technique is clinically applied.

Prevalence Of Dens Evaginatus In A Group Of Thai Children In Bangkok, Siwaporn Sukaram Jan 2004

Prevalence Of Dens Evaginatus In A Group Of Thai Children In Bangkok, Siwaporn Sukaram

Chulalongkorn University Dental Journal

Objective The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of permanent premolars with Dens evaginatus, relationships between age and the stage of attrition and between the anomaly and sex. Materials and methods 1,141 schoolchildren in Mathayomsuksa 1-3 of Ratchavinitbangkhaepankham school (602 males and 539 females) were examined for the presence of Dens evaginatus and status of anomaly in all erupting permanent premolars. Data were statistically analyzed using SPSS at a significant level of P<0.05. Results Dens evaginatus was found in 21 students (1.8 percent). The anomaly mostly occurred in mandibular premolars. There was no significant relationship between Dens evaginatus and sex. The prevalence of Dens evaginatus was significantly associated with age. There was a statistically significant difference between 11 - 12 year - old and 13 - 17 year - old children. (P=0.004) Conclusion The appropriate age for management of Dens evaginatus should be at 12 years. Successful management of Dens evaginatus depends on the likelihood of early diagnosis and intervention. This study suggests that management of Dens evaginatus initiate as soon as premolars erupt.

Chulalongkorn University Dental Journal

Objective To study the effect of aloe vera gel extract and aloe vara exudates on the proliferation of primary cultured periodontal cells, pulpal fibroblasts, and gingival fibroblasts Materials and methods Cells were treated with the aloe vera gel extract, aloe vera exudate, and the lyophilized aloe vera gel extract in the serum-free media for 24 hours. The number of cells were measured by MTT technique and analyzed by One way ANOVA (α < 0.05). Results The aloe vera gel extract, at protein concentration 5, 10, 20 and 50 µg/ml, significantly increased the proliferation of periodontal cells and pulpal fibroblasts compared with the control group. The aloe vera gel exudates, at protein concentration 400 and 600 µg/ml, significantly decreased the proliferation of periodontal cells and pulpal fibroblasts as compared with the control group. The lyophilized aloe vera gel extract, at protein concentration 50, 100 and 200 µg/ml, significantly increased the proliferation of periodontal cells and pulpal fibroblasts. The lyophilized aloe vera gel extract, at protein concentration 50 and 100 µg/ml, significantly increased the proliferation of gingival fibroblasts compared with the control group. Conclusion The aloe vera gel extract (5-50 µg/ml) and lyophilized aloe vera gel extract (50-200 µg/ml) significantly induce the proliferation of periodontal cells and pulpal fibroblasts. The lyophilized aloe vera gel extract (50-100 µg/ml) significantly induce the proliferation of gingival fibroblasts. The aloe vera gel exudates (400-600 µg/ml) significantly decreased the cell number of periodontal cells and pulpal fibroblasts.

Chulalongkorn University Dental Journal

Objective To study the effect of simvastatin on the proliferation and enzyme activity of MMP-2 and -9 in HSC-4 and CCL-25 cancer cell lines Materials and methods Cells were treated with simvastatin in the serum-free media for 24 hours. The number of cells were measured by MTT technique. Enzyme activities in the conditioned media were measured by gelatin zymography. The data were analyzed by One way ANOVA (α<0.05). Results Simvastatin, at 15 and 20 µM, significantly decreased the proliferation of HSC-4 and CCL-25 compared with the control group. Simvastatin, at 10 µM, significantly decreased the MMP-9 activity in CCL-25. Simvastatin did not significantly effect the MMP-2 and MMP-9 activities in HSC-4. Conclusion In HSC-4 and CCL-25, the toxicity concentration of simvastatin is 15 and 20 µM. Simvastatin, at 10 µM, significantly suppressed MMP-9 activity in CCL-25.
