A Research Report – Congenitally Missing Teeth In Unilateral Cleft Lip And Alveolus Children, Hsien-Lin Chuang, Wen-Ching Tsai, Wei-Yung Hsu

Objective: To retrospectively study the dentition of southern Taiwan children with unilateral complete cleft lip and alveolus for the prevalence of hypodontia. Patients: 680 Taiwan children with unilateral complete cleft lip and alveolus aged between 10 and 12 years from July, 1983 to June, 2008 in Department of Orthodontics, Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital. Material and methods: Dental records were studied as were the panoramic radiograph, periapical films of anterior teeth, upper occlusal films and dental model from which the dentition was examined. Objectives: This study aims to evaluate the relationship between the morphological variations of Sella Turcica (ST) and dental anomalies.

Methods: This study included 765 individuals between the ages of 13 and 35. ST morphology was examined in 3 groups as no calcification, partially calcified and completely calcified according to the interclinoid ligament (ICL) on lateral cephalometric films, and it was examined and evaluated in terms of its relationship to impacted canines (unilateral and bilateral), impacted teeth (except 3rd molars), root dilaceration, tooth deficiency (upper incisor lateral - lower and upper second premolar), supernumerary tooth and taurodontism.
