Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Immediate provisionalization of single implants with standard (3.75 - 4.5 mm) and wide diameter (> 4.5 mm) has been well documented. When the space is limited, small diameter implants (3.0 mm) must be used. Although high success rates have been reported, they were limited to healed site and were placed as staged procedures. The purpose of this prospective study was to evaluate the success rate and peri-implant tissue response of small diameter (3.0 mm) implants undergoing immediate provisionalization in the esthetic area.

Eleven patients who had missing maxillary lateral incisor(s) and/or mandibular incisor(s) participated in this study. Thirteen 3.0 mm …

Resorbable Barrier Effect In Sinus Graft Using Anorganic Bone, Kyung-Soo Choi Dec 2006

Resorbable Barrier Effect In Sinus Graft Using Anorganic Bone, Kyung-Soo Choi

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The effect of a resorbable membrane on new bone formation in human maxillary sinus augmentation using anorganic bovine material is unclear at the present time. As a pilot study, six patients who required bilateral maxillary sinus augmentations for endoessous dental implant treatment were grafted with anorganic bovine bone material. All six patients had a resorbable collagen membrane placed over the graft material on only one side for the sinus augmentation. At the time of implant placement, a minimum of 8 months following sinus graft healing, a biopsy was made of each side to permit histomorphometric analysis.

Similar amounts of new …

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Since the mid 1980’s, Cyclosporine has proved to be an effective immunosuppressive drug and now has a widespread application in organ transplantation. Several studies, however, have implicated cyclosporine as adversely affecting craniofacial growth in the pediatric population. 16,18 The purpose of this follow-up study was to continue to evaluate the possible untoward effects of long-term use of cyclosporine on craniofacial growth in a group of infant heart transplantation recipients by re-evaluating as many subjects as possible from the original study and evaluating new subjects. A pediatric group (N=13) was composed of six Caucasian subjects (4 male and 2 female, ages …

Implant Success In Distracted Bone Versus Autogenous Bone-Grafted Sites, Jeffrey Allan Elo Sep 2006

Implant Success In Distracted Bone Versus Autogenous Bone-Grafted Sites, Jeffrey Allan Elo

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Endosseous implants are the treatment of choice for restoring function and reconstructing edentulous areas of the maxilla and mandible. Alveolar defects can be reconstructed by either distraction osteogenesis or autogenous bone grafting. After alveolar reconstruction, endosseous implants are used to support and retain the prosthesis for restoration of form and function. We retrospectively analyzed the success rates of endosseous implant placement in distracted versus autogenous bone graft reconstruction sites in our patient population at Loma Linda University Medical Center, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. 82 consecutive patients requiring alveolar augmentation prior to implant placement were evaluated. All patients were …

Distraction Osteogenesis In Edentulous Alveolar Bone With Rhbmp-2 Enhancement, Liviu F. Eftimie

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Distraction osteogenesis, a unique system of affecting rapid bone healing in fractures, realigning malformed bones, and lengthening congenitally short and traumatically shortened bones has become an increasingly utilized technique for the maxillofacial region. The use of distraction osteogenesis has been described for increasing the height of edentulous mandibular alveolar ridges while concurrently forming new bone within the ridge to allow for adequate reconstruction. A standard protocol for performing distraction osteogenesis in the maxillofacial region has been well documented in the literature. Standard distraction osteogenesis requires an initial surgery to place the distraction osteogenesis device and mobilize the segment to be …

Evaluation Of Trismus Associated With Mandibular Fractures As It Relates To The Need For Direct Laryngoscopy And Intubation : A Prospective Study, Stephen T. Goei

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Trismus associated with mandibular fractures is thought to increase the risks of general anesthesia. Nasotracheal intubation is necessary since the dental arches will be occluded at the end of the procedure. To establish an airway, an awake nasal intubation or fiberoptic endoscopy is required if direct laryngoscopy cannot be performed due to trismus. A prospective analysis of fifty-one patients with various types of mandibular fractures indicated that trismus was for the most part due to two factors, pain induced guarding and infection. In this series, direct laryngoscopy was easily performed after induction and paralyzation in cases without infection. Direct laryngoscopy …

The methods employed included the following: 1) Each animal had one treatment quadrant and one control quadrant per arch; 2) Pre-op and post-op study models were made; 3) All 2nd premolars, 2nd molars, and 3rd molars were banded; 4) A full-thickness flap …

Histologic Host Response To Polyoxymethylene Prosthesis As A Temporomandibular Joint Condylar Replacement, Frederick R. Mathews May 1987

Histologic Host Response To Polyoxymethylene Prosthesis As A Temporomandibular Joint Condylar Replacement, Frederick R. Mathews

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Polyoxyinethylene (Delrin) is a polyacetyl homopolymer which has been used successfully in many orthopedic joint replacements. To determine histologic host response to Delrin as a temporomandibular joint condylar replacement condyles were removed from ten fully mature macaca fasicularis monkeys. The condyles were replaced with a total prosthetic Delrin condyle attached to a titanium mesh. Specimens obtained at one, two, and six months indicated total acceptance of the Delrin, remodeling of the glenoid fossa and formation of bone between the middle cranial fossa and the roof of the glenoid fossa. These findings would indicate Delrin is a viable option for condylar …

The Use Of Dura Mater As A Meniscus Replacement In Tmj Surgery, Kim J. Dipasquale Aug 1986

The Use Of Dura Mater As A Meniscus Replacement In Tmj Surgery, Kim J. Dipasquale

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Internal derangement of the temporomandibular joint is recognized as a problem of significant magnitude in both medical and dental circles. The last decade has seen a steady progression in the knowledge and sophistication of not only the anatomy and physiology of the temporomandibular joint, but also in the techniques of non-surgical and surgical management of internal derangements. Surgical correction of the unrepairable disc has typically been addressed by performing a menisectomy followed by placement of a non-physiologic implant material.

The animal study reported here was performed in order to evaluate the histologic fate and biological compatibility of freeze-dried dura when …
