The purpose of this study was to assess the education that dental hygiene students receive in practicing within schools and public health settings. The settings assessed were outside the classroom, student clinic and student rotation sites. Data were gathered by a survey/questionnaire created by Red Cap, through the University of New Mexico. The survey/questionnaire was available to participants for ten days and contained a total of 13 questions. The survey was sent to dental hygiene program directors within Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) accredited dental hygiene programs throughout the United States. Purpose: Childhood caries represents a public health issue especially for the Head Start population due to many disadvantages. Behavioral risk factors such as locus of health control (LoC) could act as indirect casual agents in the development of dental disease, but has not been fully studied. Persons living with HIV have an increased risk of complications and manifestations that may include the oral cavity. They are also more susceptible to dental implications such as dental decay and periodontal disease. Their oral health management is dependent on capable dental providers that understand and comprehend their specific needs. Those providers must also demonstrate ethical and clinical competence in order to provide comprehensive care.
