Dear Editor, We thank Rentoft and colleagues for commenting on our paper “Transcriptional profiling of oral squamous cell carcinoma using formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded samples”, and agreeing that formalin-fixed paraffin embedded (FFPE) tissue specimens can be used for gene expression studies using microarrays, to identify genes that are significantly involved in oral carcinogenesis. The similarities and high concordance between the study by Rentoft et al. [1] and ours [2] is comforting and clearly supports the use of FFPE tissues in such experiments. Objectives: This study was done to investigate the role of single nucleotide polymorphisms(SNPs) within genes of phase I (CYP1A1) and phase II (GSTM1, GSTT1,GSTP1) of the xenobiotic metabolism and its association with oral cancer risk.Methods: An unmatched case-control study was conducted using 207 newly diagnosed oral cancer patients and 117 non-cancer subjects selected from the OCRCC database. Peripheral blood was obtained from consented individuals and the CYP1A1, GSTM1, GSTT1 and GSTP1 genotypes were determined using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and restriction enzyme digestion (RFLP). Objectives: To characterize differential gene expression between oral cancerous tissues and the normal mucosal tissues of oral cancer patients and oral mucosal tissues of cancer free patients using second generation sequencing. Methods: Five fresh frozen oral cancer tissue samples from smoking patients, with 2 samples of proximal normal were included in this study. An additional 8 samples consisting of normal oral mucosal tissues from the alveolar mucosa of non-cancer patients who had their wisdom tooth removed where 4 were smokers and another 4 were non-smokers was also included. AIM: The aim of this investigation is to determine the prevalence of maxillary altered passive eruption in a dental school population. METHODS: 100 subjects were examined clinically and had models fabricated of their maxilla. Demographic, periodontal, cast measurements were recorded for each subject. Demographic variables recorded included age, gender, and ethnicity, history of orthodontic treatment, presence of incisal /occlusal wear, appearance of gingival excess, and presence of gingival asymmetry. Measurements made on cast included clinical crown length, clinical crown width, papillary height, and distance from the lateral gingival zenith to the gingival aesthetic line. Three-hydroxy-3-methyl-glutaryl-CoA (HMG-CoA) reductase competitive inhibitors, also known as statins, are widely used agents for lowering cholesterol and reducing the risk for a heart attack. Recent data suggest that statins influence bone metabolic activity by stimulating new bone formation both in vivo and in vitro. Bone resorption in periodontitis, an inflammatory disease, is orchestrated by the interaction of various cytokines in the inflamed tissue, produced by immune cells and also by resident cells such as human gingival fibroblasts (HGF) and periodontal ligament (PDL) cells. Despite the advances in cancer treatment, the 5-year survival rate for oral cancer has not changed significantly for the past 40 years and still remains among the worst of all anatomic sites. Gene expression microarrays have been used successfully in the identification of genetic alterations in cancer development, however, these have hitherto been limited by the need for specimens with good quality intact RNA. Taster and non-taster mice strains have been used extensively in animal taste research. Inbred mouse strains C57 and FVB have been proposed to be tasters, where as strains 129 and Balb/C are classified as non-tasters. Therefore, evaluating the peripheral taste system in these mice is of great importance to determine if there are morphological differences that might explain the physiological classification. Air polishing has been available for four decades, however, the concept is based on a technology invented by Dr. Robert Black in 1945. Dr. Black invented the Air Dent, a device that used compressed air, water, and a highly abrasive powder to eliminate pain from cavity preparation, making anesthesia unnecessary. The Air Dent had numerous problems that could not be overcome, but Dr. Black never gave up on his idea. The technology he invented became the basis of air polishing and was first marketed in 1976. By the late 1970s, air polishing was readily available.

When esthetic dental restorations are encountered during charting, they should be included in the treatment plan for the specific polishing procedures that are required. If the brand and type of esthetic restoration are known through the patient chart, the polishing procedures and products used should be those recommended by the manufacturer. If not possible, alternative polishing procedures should be used. A cleaning agent containing feldspar and rubber polishing cup can be used on all esthetic restorative materials with no chance of damage to the surface characterization.
The principles for polishing esthetic restorations are the same as for natural teeth. If …

The incidence of oral cancer is high in Malaysia especially for those of Indian ethnic origin. In this research, an oral cancer prognosis prediction model will be developed by using Bootstrap-ANFIS techniques. The aim of this research is to improve the prediction of oral cancer survival and to identify the key clinical and genomic markers for the survival prediction of oral cancer. The proposed model is designed to handle small medical dataset with limitations in terms of time, cost and tissue samples.

Introduction: Lately, several new stem cell sources and their effective isolation have been reported that claim to have potential for therapeutic applications. However, it is not yet clear which type of stem cell sources are most potent and best for targeted therapy.
