Caring For Individuals Who Are Experiencing Homelessness: An Audiologist’S Toolkit, Jenna Marie Sparacio
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
National-level counts for individuals experiencing homelessness have been steadily on the rise. People experiencing homelessness face extraordinary barriers and challenges in accessing health care services, including hearing healthcare. Additionally, there is a high prevalence of self- reported hearing difficulties and hearing handicap among people experiencing homelessness. Hearing loss status and management is often not prioritized in healthcare settings, and treatment plans are not typically modified to best address the hearing needs of individuals who are homeless. This evidence-based toolbox for audiologists was developed to help understand and mediate healthcare barriers that people experiencing homelessness face, as well as to help …

User Preferences For Hearing Aid Features: Outcomes, Concepts, And Test Construction, Hasan Saleh
User Preferences For Hearing Aid Features: Outcomes, Concepts, And Test Construction, Hasan Saleh
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Modern hearing aids can vary in both digital signal processing (DSP) and non-signal processing (non-DSP) features. The complexity and availability of these features can differ at opposite ends of the technology spectrum, potentially influencing aided benefit and preference. Furthermore, the amount of feature choices in modern hearing aids has led to increasing complexity in the selection process.
The first aim of this dissertation was to investigate the aided benefit and preference differences between premium and entry-level hearing aids, and to investigate the drivers of any preference differences. No significant differences were found between the entry-level and premium hearing aids in …

Background: The population of individuals 65 years old is increasing and falls are one of the most prevalent causes of disabilities among this population. Recent studies have found association between neural hearing losses and increased risk of falls, suggesting that hearing is an important input that assist visual, proprioceptive and vestibular inputs in maintaining balance. Hearing aids are known to be beneficial to improve access to sound; however, it is very limited the research regarding the effects of amplification on balance and risk of falls.
Objectives: This systematic review intends to gather and analyze all the research available regarding the …
The Effects Of Cochlear Implants And Hearing Aids On Reading Comprehension In Children: A Literature Review, Shelby Callahan
The Effects Of Cochlear Implants And Hearing Aids On Reading Comprehension In Children: A Literature Review, Shelby Callahan
2021 SLP Posters
A cochlear implant, or CI, is a device surgically implanted by a specialist. The CI has a wire, which contains electrodes, that is lead through the cochlea. The electrodes stimulate the auditory nerve, which provides the perception of sound for the brain, for those who are deaf or severely hard of hearing. Hearing aids, by contrast, are removable devices that are used to amplify sound for people who have residual hearing. Much like the earpiece of a CI, hearing aids are hooked around the back of the ear but are taken in and out of the ear canal by the …

Subjective Differences Between Premium And Mid-Level Digital Hearing Aids, Dakota Sharp
Dissertations, 2014-2019
This study compared perceptual differences between premium and mid-level hearing aids from a major manufacturer in normal hearing listeners. Limited literature currently exists comparing perceptual differences between premium and mid-level digital hearing aids. This information is highly important in decision-making for clinicians and patients alike. Barry et al. (2018) evaluated four major hearing aid models’ noise reduction properties and determined that one manufacturer’s premium and mid-level devices demonstrated significant differences in noise reduction gain in frequencies associated with human speech. We programmed this device for a mild sloping to moderately-severe SNHL using the manufacturer’s proprietary fitting formula and noise reduction …
Understanding Hearing Aid Sound Quality For Music-Listening, Jonathan Matthew Vaisberg
Understanding Hearing Aid Sound Quality For Music-Listening, Jonathan Matthew Vaisberg
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
To improve speech intelligibility for individuals with hearing loss, hearing aids amplify speech using gains derived from evidence-based prescriptive methods, in addition to other advanced signal processing mechanisms. While the evidence supports the use of hearing aid signal processing for speech intelligibility, these signal processing adjustments can also be detrimental to hearing aid sound quality, with poor hearing aid sound quality cited as a barrier to device adoption. Poor sound quality is also of concern for music-listening, in which intelligibility is likely not a consideration. A series of electroacoustic and behavioural studies were conducted to study sound quality issues in …
Assistive Devices For Communication Use With The Elderly, Corrine Koepsell, Antony Joseph
Assistive Devices For Communication Use With The Elderly, Corrine Koepsell, Antony Joseph
AuD Capstone Projects - Communication Sciences and Disorders
Hearing loss is one of the prevalent medical conditions in older adults. Although it has been documented that hearing loss is associated with various aspects of social and physical health, hearing assistive technologies and audiologic rehabilitation have been infrequently tapped clinical solutions. Cost and user problems in background noise are two common reasons why hearing aids are underutilized by seniors, and by younger age groups as well. Alternative tools, such as assistive listening devices, may be helpful for older listeners, even though they are used less frequently than hearing aids. To identify if assistive listening devices are satisfactory, a pilot …
Attitudes And Barriers Affecting Hearing Aid Use In Hispanics Living In The U.S. Borderland Region, Loren Renee Sotelo
Attitudes And Barriers Affecting Hearing Aid Use In Hispanics Living In The U.S. Borderland Region, Loren Renee Sotelo
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
Hearing loss can affect a person's overall quality of life, and has been linked to depression and dementia in older adults (Brewster, Ciarleglio, Brown, Chen, Kim, Roose, Golub & Rutherford, 2018; Ciorba, Bianchini, Pelucchi, & Pastore, 2012). In the largest study to date of hearing loss among Hispanic adults residing in the U.S., researchers found that nearly 1 in 7 has hearing loss, which is close to the overall national average (National Institutes of Health, 2015). Currently, hearing aids are the primary/most effective treatment for an age-related hearing loss; Unfortunately, the adult uptake rates are low (Chien & Lin, 2012; …
Objective Differences Between Premium And Mid-Level Digital Hearing Aids, Chelsea C. Barry
Objective Differences Between Premium And Mid-Level Digital Hearing Aids, Chelsea C. Barry
Dissertations, 2014-2019
This ongoing study compared premium and mid-level hearing aids from major manufacturers on noise reduction and general electroacoustic characteristics. The findings of this study will contribute to the scarce independent literature evaluating currently available hearing aid technology. Measuring the overall gain reduction in response to a steady state noise can objectively test noise reduction. However, such a method does not specifically test a hearing aid’s ability to reduce speech in specific narrow frequency bands. Hanline & Rout (2008) developed a set of stimuli to evaluate multichannel noise reduction algorithms more precisely. We used these stimuli to test noise reduction abilities …
Development Of A Questionnaire To Assess Attitudes Toward Hearing Aids, Corinne O'Shaughnessy
Development Of A Questionnaire To Assess Attitudes Toward Hearing Aids, Corinne O'Shaughnessy
Dissertations, 2014-2019
Many reasons have been postulated as to why persons with hearing loss are reluctant to engage in the hearing rehabilitation process. While not the only determinant, an individual's attitudes toward hearing loss and hearing aids have been shown to affect adoption of amplification adversely and eventual outcomes of hearing aid use. Several attempts have been made to develop test instruments for attitudes toward hearing loss, but nothing specific to attitudes toward hearing aids or hearing aid technology. The primary objective of this study was to develop a questionnaire to assess attitudes toward hearing aids using the ABC model of attitude …
The Effect Of Hearing Aid Use On Cognition In Older Adults With Adult Onset Hearing Loss: A Systematic Review, Jona Cano
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The goal of this paper was to systematically review literature in order to investigate whether the use of amplification in the form of hearing aids by older adults positively impacts cognitive status. If the results of this review uncover a positive association between hearing-aid use and cognition, then hearing aids can be recommended as an intervention method for the mitigation of cognitive decline. The eight studies included in this paper were reviewed based on the research design and the cognitive outcome measures employed. Additionally, the secondary measures of health utilized by study investigators were also evaluated. Of the eight studies …

Bone Conduction Transmission And Head‐Shadow Effects For Unilateral Hearing Losses Fit With Transcranial Cic Hearing Aids, Marc A. Fagelson, Colleen Noe, Jennifer Blevins, Owen Murnane
Bone Conduction Transmission And Head‐Shadow Effects For Unilateral Hearing Losses Fit With Transcranial Cic Hearing Aids, Marc A. Fagelson, Colleen Noe, Jennifer Blevins, Owen Murnane
Owen D. Murnane
Bone conduction transmission and head‐shadow effects were determined with transcranial completely‐in‐the‐canal (TCCIC) CROS hearing aids. Five subjects with documented profound unilateral hearing loss and experience with traditional CROS/BICROS fittings (TCROS) were tested with a CIC hearing aid placed in their poorer ear. Peak SPL was measured at the tympanic membrane and ranged from 105–115 dB SPL at 2000 Hz. Pure‐tone crossover thresholds and functional gain tested at frequencies from 250–8000 Hz varied considerably more than the SPL measures. The pure‐tone results indicated that sensitivity in the better ear was moderately associated with functional gain across frequency. Speech recognition was then …

The Impact Of Different Levels Of Instruction On The Outcomes Of Using A Personal Sound Amplifier Product, Shannon Willingham
The Impact Of Different Levels Of Instruction On The Outcomes Of Using A Personal Sound Amplifier Product, Shannon Willingham
AuD Capstone Projects - Communication Sciences and Disorders
Personal sound amplifiers (PSAPs) provide accessible and affordable healthcare to hearing impaired individuals that would otherwise not seek treatment. Like a self-fitting hearing aid, PSAPs do not involve an audiology service. The current pilot study investigated the impact different levels of instruction have on the effectiveness of using a personal sound amplifier product for four participants with mild to moderate sensorineural hearing loss. Basic written instruction and premium audiology services were utilized to teach participants how to use the device. Preliminary data suggested that the acquired knowledge, skills, and outcomes of using the PSAPs were similar between two levels of …
Predictors Of Language Outcome For Children In The Ontario Infant Hearing Program, Olivia M. Daub
Predictors Of Language Outcome For Children In The Ontario Infant Hearing Program, Olivia M. Daub
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The Ontario Infant Hearing Program (OIHP) provides early interventions (i.e., hearing aids) to children who are hard of hearing (CHH) because research consistently demonstrates their benefit to language outcomes. The impact of pre-fitting language abilities on these outcomes are not well understood.
This retrospective cohort analysis examined the performance of OIHP children on the Preschool Language Scale-4 at the time of (n=47), and after (n=19), initial hearing aid intervention. Regression analyses revealed that, before amplification, hearing loss severity predicted language abilities. However, after amplification, severity of hearing loss did not uniquely predict language achievement, but rather …

Hearing Aid Use And Cognitive Function: A Systematic Review, Hershel Korngut
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This systematic review analyzed the research relating the use of hearing aids to cognitive function. Hearing aid use was examined to see if wearing hearing aids improves cognitive function, if the length of time hearing aids are worn impacts cognitive ability, if the type of hearing aid used has any impact on cognitive function, and if hearing aid use slows down cognitive decline. Ten studies met the criteria for this review. An analysis of the research revealed some evidence to support wearing hearing aids improves cognitive function, however, there is substantial evidence that shows no impact between wearing hearing aids …
A Case Study Of Cochlear Implants And Complications, Carly E. Amurao
A Case Study Of Cochlear Implants And Complications, Carly E. Amurao
Senior Honors Projects
A cochlear implant is an electronic medical device that replaces the function of the damaged inner ear, allowing the individual access to sound. In recent years, there has been tremendous progress in developing technology in the area of cochlear implants to aid those with severe/profound hearing loss. Specifically, there has been a movement towards bilateral implantation. Each cochlear implant candidate has a unique hearing loss, and must reach required bench marks in order to be considered a viable candidate for a cochlear implant. This process includes: meeting the required level of hearing loss, a required trial with hearing aids that …
The Effect Of Grief On Bonding With A Deaf Child, Gabriela Cardona
The Effect Of Grief On Bonding With A Deaf Child, Gabriela Cardona
Senior Honors Projects
Since hearing screenings for children happen after birth, there is no way for
parents to prepare themselves for having a child with hearing loss and any
lifestyle changes that will follow. Many parents have trouble coping with and
accepting the news of having a deaf or hard-of-hearing child. This diagnosis also
often brings along with it the stress of additional necessary appointments and
decisions. The parent’s idea of a “perfect and ideal” child is gone. Parents need
to grieve the loss of this idea while also tending to their child and giving their
child the opportunities and support needed for …
