Health literacy is a constantly evolving concept that requires similarly evolving adaptation and specialization of health care to increase the quality of life for all. One demographic that is largely ignored when it comes to research in health literacy, specifically in the traditional South, is the d/Deaf and hard of hearing/Hard of Hearing (DHH) population. How does the use of telepractice during speech language therapy affect the communicative function and communicative diversity of provider, deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) pediatric patient, and caregiver speech? This study examined communicative functions and diversity in the provider, DHH children with cochlear implants (n = 7, mean age = 4.9 years, range = 3.5-6.75 years), and caregiver utterances during one 30-minute in-person and one sequential tele session, order counterbalanced. To measure communicative function, each utterance was classified into 16 mutually exclusive categories for the child and into 15 categories for the adults. Many children and adults with communication disorders, who live in Maine, do not receive speech therapy. Rural geography, a shortage of qualified speech-language pathologists, inadequate/costly transportation and inclement weather create significant challenges in reaching people in need of services. In response to this problem, an innovative graduate level telepractice training program in speech-language pathology has been developed at the University of Maine, Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD). The training program has three learning components: (1) Intensive Training, (2) Clinical Practicum, (3) Discussion Groups.
