Prevalence And Risk Factors Of Low Back Pain And Disability Index Among Operating Room Nurses, Anita Kiruba Jeyakumar, Florence Segaran

Journal of Perioperative Nursing

Introduction

Work related low back pain (LBP) has a clear impact on productivity at work. The aim of the study was to assess the prevalence and risk factors of LBP among operating room (OR) nurses. It also aimed to identify the disability index among those OR nurses diagnosed with LBP.

Method

This cross-sectional survey was conducted among the OR nurses working at a 2500-bed tertiary care centre with 37 operating rooms. OR nurses with a minimum of one year experience were included. A validated self- structured questionnaire was administered to them. Statistical analysis was done using Chi square test, and …

Private Pain – Identifying Gaps In The Management Of Chronic Pain Patients In Private Hospitals: A Case Study, Johanna Gale Sep 2018

Private Pain – Identifying Gaps In The Management Of Chronic Pain Patients In Private Hospitals: A Case Study, Johanna Gale

Journal of Perioperative Nursing

This is a case study of a patient who experiences chronic pain and was admitted for an acute surgical procedure in a private hospital. It illustrates how communication and teamwork can be overlooked within the multidisciplinary focus when jointly caring for this group of patients within the public and private sectors. This case study offers a nurse-led approach to improving individualised health care for chronic pain patients while preventing gaps in health care.

Establishing A New Cardiac Surgery Service In An Australian University Hospital: Pitfalls And Lessons Learned, Claudia Ciobanu, Sharon Latimer, Brigid M. Gillespie

Journal of Perioperative Nursing

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death among Australians. Creating and delivering a world-class cardiac surgery service in a cost-effective way is the principle goal of health care organisations and managers. Establishing a new health care service is a unique opportunity and requires detailed planning and implementation. Managing change is pivotal to establishing a new patient-focused health care service, and should be coupled with effective communication and teamwork among all stakeholders. There are foreseen and unforeseen challenges associated with any project so sharing the lessons learned is an important way for others in a similar situation to avoid potential …

Bone Graft Donor Site Infection With A Rare Organism, Aeromonas Hydrophila: A Typical Location, Presentation And Organism With 2 Years Follow-Up: Case Report, Obada Hasan, Wajiha Khan, Muneeba Jessar, Aly Zaheer Pathan, Riaz Hussain Lakdawala

Section of Orthopaedic Surgery

Introduction: Aeromonas are Gram-negative bacilli often causing necrotizing fasciitis or sepsis in immunocompromised patients. Aeromonas Hydrophila is most often found in immunocompromised patients or those with burns or aquatic trauma. When patients present with a discharge and infection on bone graft donor site and progressive sepsis, an Aeromonas hydrophila infection should be considered in the differential diagnosis.
Presentation of Case: We report here a rare case of Aeromonas hydrophila with surgical site sep- sis/infection in an immunocompromised 69 years old female, with several comorbids. Here we are reporting infection on donor surgical graft site, sparing major surgical site with the …

Surgery And Conservative Treatment Of The Acl-Mcl Injured Knee, Mason Mcmanimon-Myers Apr 2018

Surgery And Conservative Treatment Of The Acl-Mcl Injured Knee, Mason Mcmanimon-Myers

Undergraduate Research Celebration 2018

There is a clinical need to evaluate the effectiveness of nonoperative versus operative treatment of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)-medial collateral ligament (MCL) combined knee injury. The incidence of these injuries is frequent in athletic populations and requires the best treatment for optimal patient outcomes and function in day-to-day life as well as athletics. The appraisal focuses on whether or not to pair ACL reconstruction with MCL reconstruction or ACL reconstruction with MCL bracing. Focused Clinical Question: What is the effect on patients with a combined ACL-MCL injury of the knee with conservative treatment compared to surgery on patient reported …

Seasonal Influence On Postoperative Complications After Total Knee Arthroplasty, Azeem Tariq Malik, Muhammad Shahid Khan, Arif Ali M, Syed Hamza Mufarrih, Shahryar Noordin

Section of Orthopaedic Surgery

Purpose: This study is aimed at investigating whether inpatient complications and surgical site infections (SSIs) occurred more commonly in patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA) during the summer season.
Materials and Methods: A total of 725 patients who underwent unilateral or bilateral TKA were included in this study. A total of 241 patients (33.2%) underwent TKA between May and August. Our outcomes of interest were the incidence of postoperative complications and length of stay.
Result: May-August surgeries were associated with a higher risk of postoperative inpatient complications (p=0.003). May-August surgeries (odds ratio [OR], 2.13; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.18 …
