Clinical Effectiveness Evaluation Of Laser Therapy And Dry Needling In Treatment Of Patients With Myofascial Pain In Masseter Muscle, Diego A. Oliveira, Rafael De Almeida Spinelli Pinto, Larissa De Oliveira Reis, Isabela Maddalena Dias, Isabel Cristina Goncalves Leite, Fabiola Pessoa Pereira Leite

International Journal of Orofacial Myology and Myofunctional Therapy

Myofascial pain is considered a type of muscular TMD, being common in patients with musculoskeletal pain associated with active or latent trigger points. Among the therapeutic options, there are low-intensity laser therapy and dry needling. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of these two therapies in the masseter muscles of patients with myofascial pain. Ten patients diagnosed with myofascial pain, with or without limitation of mouth opening, were randomly divided into two groups for treatment with low intensity laser therapy (G1) (n = 5) or dry needling (G2) (n = 5). The pain symptomatology and the …

Juvenile Dermatomyositis - A Case Report With Review On Oral Manifestations And Oral Health Considerations, Pritesh Ruparelia, Oshin Verma, Vrutti Shah, Krishna Shah Nov 2018

Juvenile Dermatomyositis - A Case Report With Review On Oral Manifestations And Oral Health Considerations, Pritesh Ruparelia, Oshin Verma, Vrutti Shah, Krishna Shah

International Journal of Orofacial Myology and Myofunctional Therapy

Juvenile Dermatomyositis is the most common inflammatory myositis in children, distinguished by proximal muscle weakness, a characteristic rash and Gottron’s papules. The oral lesions most commonly manifest as diffuse stomatitis and pharyngitis with halitosis. We report a case of an 8 year old male with proximal muscle weakness of all four limbs, rash, Gottron’s papules and oral manifestations. Oral health professionals must be aware of the extraoral and intraoral findings of this rare, but potentially life threatening autoimmune disease of childhood, for early diagnosis, treatment, prevention of long-term complications and to improve the prognosis and hence, the quality of life …

Methadone For Analgesia In Children With Life-Limiting Illness: Experience From A Tertiary Children's Health Service., Christine Mott, Amrita Sarpal, Krista Moss, Anthony Herbert

Paediatrics Publications

Methadone has the potential to assist in the management of pain in children with life-limiting illness, but its use is limited by its complex pharmacokinetic profile and limited research on its use in children. This is a retrospective review of the use of methadone as an analgesic in 16 children with life-limiting illness. Efficacy, dosing and side effect profile were analysed. Fifteen (94%) patients had improvements in their analgesia with minimal observed adverse effects. Patients were either rapidly converted from a prior opioid in one change or received methadone as an adjunct medication. Conversions were calculated using ratios frequently in …

Survey Of Sensory Diet Use Among California Occupational Therapy Practitioners, Morganne Peterson, Allison Hunt, Emily White

Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects

The purpose of this study was to examine the use of sensory diets in the field of occupational therapy. This study investigated the use of sensory diets among California occupational therapy practitioners. A mixed-methods design was used to collect data through an online survey. The survey was sent out to members of the Occupational Therapy Association of California (OTAC) and received 98 respondents within one month. Participants worked among various clinical settings and implemented sensory diets with various client populations. Practitioners reported using terms such as “sensory strategies,” “sensory tools,” and “sensory supports” which indicates an overall misunderstanding associated with …

Accurate, real-time identification and display of critical anatomic structures, such as the nerve and vasculature structures, are critical for reducing complications and improving surgical outcomes. Human vision is frequently limited in clearly distinguishing and contrasting these structures. We present a novel imaging system, which enables noninvasive visualization of critical anatomic structures during surgical dissection. Peripheral nerves are visualized by a snapshot polarimetry that calculates the anisotropic optical properties. Vascular structures, both venous and arterial, are identified and monitored in real-time using a near-infrared laser-speckle-contrast imaging. We evaluate the system by performing in vivo animal studies with qualitative comparison by contrast-agent-aided …
