Sensor-Monitored Compliance Following Rcr And Effects On Postoperative Prognosis, Phillip Westbrook Mar 2023

Sensor-Monitored Compliance Following Rcr And Effects On Postoperative Prognosis, Phillip Westbrook

Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses

Rehabilitation in the immediate postoperative period after surgical rotator cuff repair is critical for long-term patient outcomes. This rehabilitation typically consists of six weeks of immobilization with a sling following surgery to optimize tendon-to-bone healing, but the benefit of this has been debated in recent years. The optimal immobilization period is difficult to determine because patient compliance with immobilization protocols varies. Subjective measures from patients regarding compliance are often unreliable, suggesting a need for a more objective approach. In this prospective cohort study, we will use temperature sensors to monitor sling wearing times and assess the effect of patient compliance …

A Bittersweet Balance: Adjunct Therapy For Hyperglycemia In Critically Ill Patients, Caroline Argyros Aug 2017

A Bittersweet Balance: Adjunct Therapy For Hyperglycemia In Critically Ill Patients, Caroline Argyros

Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses

Stress-induced hyperglycemia in critically ill patients negatively affects their recovery. Providers have struggled to balance the treatment of hyperglycemia with aggressive insulin therapy with the risk of hypoglycemia as an adverse effect. Both immobilization and continuous enteral nutrition are common in a critical care setting and have implications as contributors for further hyperglycemia due to decreased peripheral glucose uptake and worsening insulin resistance. We propose to determine if an aggressive early mobilization protocol and nutrition protocol in the form of bolus feeds will decrease the amount of insulin units needed to treat hyperglycemia in critically ill patients. To do so, …

The Effect Of Pregabalin In Patients With Phantom Limb Pain: A Randomized Controlled Trial, Brandon Beattie Jul 2015

The Effect Of Pregabalin In Patients With Phantom Limb Pain: A Randomized Controlled Trial, Brandon Beattie

Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses

Phantom Limb Pain is perceived pain in a region of the body that has been removed through amputation. It is a devastating syndrome affecting up to 80% of all post-amputation patients, however, no reliable treatment option currently exists. Pregabalin is proven to be effective in the treatment of similar symptoms of a diabetic neuropathic origin. We propose a double-blinded, randomized controlled trial to evaluate the effect of pregabalin in patients who experience Phantom Limb Pain. We expect the pregabalin treatment to produce a statistically significant change in mean pain from baseline as well as an improvement in quality of life …

Clinical And Radiographic Assessment Of Lumbar Spine Total Disc Replacement In Athletes With Two Year Follow Up, Mark H. Mcrae Jan 2008

Clinical And Radiographic Assessment Of Lumbar Spine Total Disc Replacement In Athletes With Two Year Follow Up, Mark H. Mcrae

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The purpose of the study was to evaluate the consequences of athletic activity on the clinical and radiographic outcomes of lumbar spine total disc replacement (TDR) patients. The data for this study is drawn secondarily from a prospective randomized study evaluating the Prodisc prosthesis at Yale New Haven Hospital. Athletic activities prior to the onset of spinal injury, after the onset of spinal injury, and post lumbar spine total disc replacement (TDR) surgery were assessed. Athletic activity was classified into three groups. These were contact/vigorous, moderate, and light, based on effect on the involved spinal segments. Outcomes were assessed both …
