Supporting Children With Disabilities At School: Implications For The Advocate Role In Professional Practice And Education, Stella Ng Phd
Stella Ng PhD
Purpose: School settings are a common practice context for rehabilitation professionals; health advocacy is a common and challenging practice role for professionals in this context. This study explored how pediatric practitioners advocate for children with disabilities at school. Specifically, we examined everyday advocacy in the context of school-based support for children with disabilities.
Method: Our theoretical framework and methodological approach were informed by institutional ethnography, which maps and makes visible hidden social coordinators of work processes with a view to improving processes and outcomes. We included families, educators, and health/rehabilitation practitioners from Ontario. Of the 37 consented informants, 27 were …

Pirandello’S Analogy: A Source For A Better Understanding Of The Social Impact Of Stroke, M.A.C. Van Haaren, Maggie Lawrence, P.H. Goossens, B. Van Den Bossche, M.J.H. Wermer, A.A. Kaptein
Dr. Maggie Lawrence
Background: Suffering a stroke has major implications for the patient. To understand human suffering, one should understand society. Pirandello described society as a higher entity than the individual, thereby justifying human adaptability to society. We explore a qualitative finding that suggests that social trends may influence how stroke patients prioritize aspects of their rehabilitation. Methods: We compare a contemporary patient’s experience of stroke recovery with that of a fictional character from the works of Luigi Pirandello. Both patients had two main residual symptoms: hemiparesis and aphasia. Results: The rehabilitation priorities of the two patients differed, and appeared to reflect the …

Social Networks Enabled Coordination Model For Cost Management Of Patient Hospital Admissions, Shahadat Uddin, Liaquat Hossain
Shahadat Uddin
In this study, we introduce a social networks enabled coordination model for exploring the effect of network position of “patient,” “physician,” and “hospital” actors in a patient-centered care network that evolves during patient hospitalization period on the total cost of coordination. An actor is a node, which represents an entity such as individual and organization in a social network. In our analysis of actor networks and coordination in the healthcare literature, we identified that there is significant gap where a number of promising hospital coordination model have been developed (e.g., Guided Care Model, Chronic Care Model) for the current healthcare …
Meniere’S Disease Second Edition Incorporating Recent Advances, Balasubramanian Thiagarajan
Meniere’S Disease Second Edition Incorporating Recent Advances, Balasubramanian Thiagarajan
Balasubramanian Thiagarajan
In late 19th century Prosper Meniere described a condition characterized by ear block, tinnitus, and vertigo. He even correctly identified the site of lesion to be labyrinth. It wont be a understatement to say that precious little has been added to the knowledge and understanding of the disorder since then. Prosper Meniere infact lived far ahead of his time. He was born in 1799 in France. In 1848 he began to translate the text book on hearing loss authored by Kramer. The book was written in German. This kindled his interest in otology.

Isolation And Characterization Of Acanthamoeba Spp. From Air-Conditioners In Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Init Ithoi
Init Ithoi
During a study on the quality of the indoor environment, Acanthamoeba spp. were detected in 20 out of 87 dust samples collected from air-conditioners installed in a four-story campus building located in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Twenty-one cloned Acanthamoeba isolates designated as IMU1 to IMU21 were established from the positive primary cultures. Five species were identified from the 16 isolates according to the morphological criteria of Pussard and Pons; i.e. A. castellanii, A. culbertsoni, A. griffini, A. hatchetti and A. polyphaga. Species identities for the remaining five isolates (IMU4, IMU5, IMU15, IMU20 and IMU21), however, could not be determined morphologically. At …

What Is The Evidence For Using Family Based Interventions To Prevent Stroke Recurrence?, Maggie Lawrence, Caroline Mcvey, Susan M. Kerr
Dr. Maggie Lawrence
Stroke has a devastating impact on individuals and families. Risk factors for recurrence include lifestyle behaviours such as smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, an unhealthy diet and physical inactivity. This article describes a programme of research that aims to gather and synthesise the evidence required to inform the development and evaluation of a family centred, behavioural intervention designed to address lifestyle risk factors for recurrent stroke. We present an overview of the research undertaken to develop the evidence base. This included a survey of stroke nurse practice, a focus group study with people who had had a stroke as well as …

Young Adults’ Experience Of Stroke: A Qualitative Review Of The Literature, Maggie Lawrence
Dr. Maggie Lawrence
Stroke is a life-threatening event that has a devastating impact on young adults and their families. The author conducted a systematic review of the qualitative literature to explore the experience of stroke from the perspective of young adults. Four primary research 'papers' were analyzed using the Qualitative Assessment and Review Instrument; 60 findings were extracted from the papers and merged into 13 categories, from which three synthesized findings were developed - disorientation, disrupted sense of self, and roles and relationships.

An Ethnographic Study Of The Media Consumption Habits Of Registered Nurses In The Chicago Designated Market Area (Dma), Sherri L. Ter Molen
Sherri L. Ter Molen
Because there has been a nursing shortage for the past decade and because the competition between employers for experienced registered nurses is fierce, I utilized archival quantitative data from a syndicated advertising database known as The Media Audit, quantitative data I collected from 100 surveys, qualitative data that I collected from 15 interviews, and qualitative data that I collected during 20 hours of observations in hospital cafeterias and nearby restaurants to discover how RNs use media, whether or not they share these media as an occupational co-culture, & their attitudes toward recruitment advertising in these media. This study draws upon …

Central Northern Adelaide Health Service Annual Report 2007-2008, The Queen Elizabeth Hospital
The Queen Elizabeth Hospital
The Central Northern Adelaide Health Service is the largest of South Australia’s health regions, employing more than 16,000 staff* across around 200 separate health units and services* (*figures as at December 2008). The region brings together four major acute hospitals (Royal Adelaide, Lyell McEwin, The Queen Elizabeth and Modbury Hospitals), along with the Hampstead and St Margaret’s Rehabilitation Hospitals and a significant number of mental health and primary health care services. The region also delivers two major, state-wide health services – BreastScreen SA and the SA Dental Service – and has an annual operating budget in excess of $1.5 billion.

Informal Carers’ Experience Of Caring For Stroke Survivors, Lorraine M. Smith, Maggie Lawrence, Susan M. Kerr, Peter Langhorne, Kennedy R. Lees
Dr. Maggie Lawrence
Stroke is the third most common cause of death in industrialized countries and a major cause of adult disability. However, the burden of caring for stroke survivors usually rests with family members who have neither chosen nor volunteered for the role of ‘carer’. This paper reports on a study which aimed to describe the experience of caring for a stroke survivor at one year after stroke in Scotland.

In 1994 I was invited to write the ‘Modes of Care’ chapter for the Chiropractors’ Association of Australia’s ‘Clinical Parameters for Australian Practice’ clinical guidelines document. This took over a year of work and the final document I submitted was of 21,285 words and 497 references. It's purpose was to describe and rate procedures commonly used by Australian chiropractors in the care of their patients.
