BACKGROUND: The Affordable Care Act expanded Medicaid coverage for people with low income in the United States. Expanded insurance coverage could promote more timely access to cancer treatment, which could improve overall survival (OS), yet the long-term effects of Medicaid expansion (ME) remain unknown. We evaluated whether ME was associated with improved timely treatment initiation (TTI) and 3-year OS among patients with breast, cervical, colon, and lung cancers who were affected by the policy.

METHODS: Medicaid-insured or uninsured patients aged 40-64 with stage I-III breast, cervical, colon, or non-small cell lung cancer within the National Cancer Database (NCDB). A difference-in-differences …

INTRODUCTION: Eosinophils contribute to the pathogenesis of allergic diseases, including asthma, allergic rhinitis, and atopic dermatitis. We previously reported that human tissue eosinophils have high CD69 expression compared to blood eosinophils, and its expression is correlated with disease severity and the number of infiltrated eosinophils. However, biological CD69 signaling activity in eosinophils remains unclear.

METHODS: CD69 expression on lung tissue eosinophils obtained from mice with ovalbumin-induced asthma was measured using flow cytometry. CD69 crosslinking was performed on eosinophils purified from the spleen of IL-5 transgenic mice to investigate CD69 signaling and its function in eosinophils. Then, qPCR, Western blot, enzyme-linked …

High grade epithelial ovarian carcinoma is an aggressive tumor. Treatment includes platinum therapy, however it recurs in most patients due to therapy resistance. In this project, we study the immunohistochemical (IHC) expression of five potential biomarkers/prognostic markers in high grade epithelial ovarian carcinoma: EGFR, HLA-G, CD70, c-MET, and NY-ESO1. A cohort of 274 patients is used. We compare the IHC expression with age, stage, ascites status, family history of cancer, disease free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS). EGFR expression is significantly correlated with family history and worse OS. HLA-G is associated with worse OS. To confirm the results of …

Data Science Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) is known to modulate the immune system and contribute to the generation of anti-tumor T cells and stimulate T cell infiltration into tumors. Radiation-induced immune suppression (RIIS) is a side effect of radiation therapy that can decrease immunological function by killing naive T cells as well as SBRT-induced newly created effector T cells, suppressing the immune response to tumors and increasing susceptibility to infections.

PURPOSE: RIIS varies substantially among patients and it is currently unclear what drives this variability. Models that can accurately predict RIIS in near real time based on treatment plan characteristics …

To assess the expression of Lin28, MUC1, and Lipocalin2 by immunohistochemistry in breast carcinoma and to investigate their correlation with clinicopathological features and patient survival.

Methods

This cross-sectional study was performed on 60formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue blocks of breast carcinoma cases. Expression patterns of Lin28, MUC1, and Lipocalin2 in breast carcinoma were investigated regarding their relation with patients̕5-year survival rate.

Results

Lin28, MUC1, and Lipocalin2 expressions were found in 55, 75, and 45% of cases, respectively. Lin28 was located in the cytoplasm, MUC1 showed membranous expression,whereas Lipocalin2 …

The New Ropanasuri Journal of Surgery

Introduction. The strategy for treating limb soft tissue sarcoma (STS) is challenging due to delayed diagnosis and the non-specific clinical picture, leading to the mortality of nearly 50% of newly diagnosed patients. Various therapeutic modalities have been applied to increase the survival of patients with extremity soft tissue sarcoma. However, clinicopathological factors can influence the survival rate and thus affect the effectiveness of therapy. This study aims to determine the numbers and factors influencing overall survival five years after treatment for patients with soft tissue sarcoma of the extremities at Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital (CMGH) in 2011-2015.
