This article is a nexus of research, personal journaling reflections, and mandala creation from the authors own journals and focuses on the use of Mandalas as part of a reflective practice journaling process. This project aims to improve patient satisfaction for vulnerable population patients while in hospital, namely transgender and gender non-conforming people. A major roadblock for this population in seeking medical care is their fear of discrimination when accessing healthcare, resulting in a delay, or avoidance of medical care. The research presented in this thesis explores the impact of interprofessional education on undergraduate nursing and speech-language pathology students with an overall goal of improving the interprofessional relationship between the two fields. Utilizing quantitative and qualitative methods in the form of a pre-test, educational materials, live guided observation, and post-tests, the researchers found an increase in the nursing students ’ ability to identify the role of the speech-language pathologist in a medical setting (knowledge). There was also an increase in the speech-language pathology students’ ability to understand how and when to communicate with nurses in a medical setting (knowledge).

The use of simulation-based activities is a growing trend in nursing pedagogy and requires evaluation to assess and improve outcomes. This project completed a review of multiple research studies and reviews to evaluate the effects of simulation and simulation methods on students’ sense of self-efficacy and confidence. The findings support the use of simulation and found that simulation does increase students’ perception of confidence and self-efficacy. The data collected included both qualitative and quantitative data. A few studies lacked generalizability due to small sample size and scenario selection. In order to provide effective care, individuals must understand their own attitudes towards poverty. The purpose of this study was to evaluate for changes in Practical Nursing students’ attitudes towards poverty with the use of a poverty simulation based upon the Experiential Learning Theory. The purpose of this literature review is to discover the effect that a mentor relationship can have on novice pre-licensed undergraduate nursing students and provide recommendations for future mentor programs. The studies reviewed had to meet specific criteria including: found in scholarly peer reviewed journals, original research studies or systematic reviews, and current literature, completed within or near five years. There were ten pieces of evidence reviewed which included one randomized-controlled trial, four quasi-experimental studies, four qualitative studies and one integrative review. A mass casualty exercise was performed to investigate triage and decontamination of patients exposed to an irritant gas. Nursing students participated in two groups: emergency department triage (ED) and decontamination (DECON). While participants felt overall that the experience was valuable, DECON participants had a greater interest in emergency response and were more likely to volunteer again.
