Purpose/Background

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a common, chronic disease that increases the risk of coronary artery disease and stroke fourfold, which makes protecting cardiac function a priority. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) and American Heart Association (AHA) recommend the prescription of statins to reduce cardiovascular complications. Unfortunately, provider and patient adherence to this recommendation is poor.This study aimed to determine if shared-decision making and patient follow-up within a 6 month period of being newly diagnosed with T2D has an effect on the initiation rate of statin therapy.

Background. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and individuals who identify as transgender and queer (LGBTQ) often experience negative healthcare encounters (Parameshwaran et al., 2017). According to the Williams Institute of Law (2022), there are 1.3 million adults who self-identify as transgender. This education project utilized a pre/post-test design to explore attitudes, practices, and knowledge of primary care providers when interfacing with individuals who identify as transgender in primary health care settings.

Education recommendations for heart failure are given by the American Heart Association (AHA) and the American College of Cardiology (ACC). Mothers of infants admitted into the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) are at risk for developing anxiety, depression, and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) related to their child’s hospitalization which impedes the mother-infant bonding and attachment process. Research shows that children of mothers suffering from these issues are more likely to develop their own behavioral, emotional and cognitive problems later in life. Project participants completed a pre-education questionnaire prior to the project leader providing intimate partner violence educational materials and a presentation entitled Recognizing and Responding to Victims of Intimate Partner Violence in the Emergency Room. Background: The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) provides accreditation to hospitals, including “heart certification.” The facility was successful at meeting the four measures previously assigned to them. As a result, they were given four new measures. One of these standards is providing discharge education based on “heart scores.”. Only 35% of patients are receiving discharge/follow-up education at discharge from the emergency department (ED).

Background: Quality improvement efforts from an urban facility have observed a need for staff education on the central line maintenance bundle and consistent surveillance with the Central Line Maintenance Evaluation Tool (CLMET).

Purpose: To address the practice gap of central line maintenance bundle usage at the bedside by utilizing the CLMET consistently.

Methods: A voluntary didactic program offered to staff and encouraging daily utilization of the CLMET that included real-time feedback by the supervisors.

Ensuring students meet health requirements to enter Kindergarten is a time-consuming process. By improving education to parents to help them discern differences between PreK and Kindergarten requirements, the health of students can be optimized and the time burden for administrators and school nurses can be reduced. There is evidence that parents/guardians better respond to non-written material delivered through push notification or email. A 5-minute video presentation was distributed to 24 parents/guardians of PreK students. Oral chemotherapy and intravenous (IV) chemotherapy share many of the same side effects. However, at community General Hospital Medical Center oral chemotherapy patients were not receiving equitable monitoring and education like their IV chemotherapy counterparts. To bridge the gap, a quality improvement (QI) initiative to improve education, documentation and follow-up between visits was proposed to increase compliance and understanding. Problem: A rural community hospital located in the Eastern U.S. experienced an increase in hospital acquired pressure injuries (HAPIs), predominantly in the intensive care unit (ICU). In 2018, 17.4% of HAPIs occurred in the ICU.

Human trafficking is a form of modern-day slavery; sex trafficking is one form of human trafficking. Previous research has demonstrated that most trafficking victims encounter the healthcare system at some point during their trafficking experience. Patients who have been sex trafficked may experience profound psychological and physical trauma. Healthcare personnel are in key positions to screen for trafficking and to provide appropriate referrals; if an awareness of the problem exists. Evidenced-based research has identified that routine HIV testing and education is pivotal in identifying new infections, providing access to treatment, and decreasing the rates of transmission. In 2006, the CDC implemented new guidelines recommending that all persons aged 13-64 years be tested yearly for HIV regardless of risk factors. Despite these recommendations, the CDC estimated that less than 37% of people were tested in 2017 and in the years prior.
