Morena has two children and a husband, and she is currently pregnant. Her life in Afghanistan felt normal, and she was able to study there until she had to flee. Her father in law was a truck driver for an American company and he had to surrender several vehicles to the Taliban. They robbed his vehicle and threatened violence. Because of this danger, Morena and her family fled. Their eight-month journey included rejection in Turkey and Iran multiple times and many struggles with smugglers and police. They eventually made it to a camp in Greece.

The literature shows an inverse association between exercise and mental disorders. The aim of this study is to further elaborate on this association with regards to exercise and its relationship with anxiety and depression in a college sample. The subject group focused on seniors in the Spit for Science data set which incorporated a total of 821 students. Physical activity was assessed using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) to estimate the overall metabolic equivalents (MET’s) each student spent in walking, moderate, or vigorous activity levels in the previous week. It is estimated that 2.6 million adolescents suffer from major depressive episodes each year. Research has noted that symptoms in youth have become indicators of mental health complications later in life. Studies reveal that low income is a risk factor for depression and that socioeconomically-disadvantaged teenagers are more than twice as likely to develop mental illnesses. Only roughly 25% of children with mental illnesses receive adequate help and 80% of these resources come from schools. LGBTQ adolescents are at much greater risk of committing suicide as compared to their straight and cisgender peers. This project focused on connecting various community organizations working on teen suicide and compiling a list of resources so that primary care providers might play a more pivotal role in providing mental health support to the Upper Valley’s LGBTQ teens.

Depression among the elderly is significantly under-diagnosed and inadequately treated. With Vermont's rapidly aging population, particularly in Addison County, increased diagnosis and treatment, whether behavioral or pharmacological, will lead to increased quality of life for aging individuals and their caretakers. This study aimed to increase patient education about the signs of depression as well as available community resources available to help this patient population.
