Perceptual Analysis Of Children's Adaptation To An Electropalatography Sensor, Kasey Marie Duffield
Perceptual Analysis Of Children's Adaptation To An Electropalatography Sensor, Kasey Marie Duffield
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to observe childrens adaptation to an electropalatographic (EPG) sensor. Sound recordings of six children between the ages of 7;0 and 9;11 sampled at 30-minute intervals over a two-hour period of wearing an EPG sensor were perceptually evaluated to quantify the children's adaptation over time. Twenty native speakers of American English evaluated the pronunciation of a series of words with embedded stops and fricatives produced with and without an EPG sensor in place. When collapsed over speaker and stimulus type, listener ratings decreased significantly after inserting the EPG sensor. Ratings then increased significantly after the …

Factors Associated With Unmet Respite Care Needs In Families Of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Kim E. Whitmore
Factors Associated With Unmet Respite Care Needs In Families Of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Kim E. Whitmore
Theses and Dissertations
Background. One in sixty-eight children have Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). To optimize outcomes to families through use of respite care, we examined the prevalence of unmet respite care needs and associated factors in families of children with ASD, compared to families of children with special healthcare needs (CSHCN) without ASD.
Design. An exploratory secondary analysis of the 2009-2010 National Survey of Children with Special Healthcare Needs (NS-CSHCN) was conducted using a non-experimental, descriptive, correlational design. The NS-CSHCN is a national cross-sectional telephone survey of 40,242 US households. The final sample included parents of children age 2-18 years old with ASD …

Early Life Factors And Health Outcomes In Children And Mothers, Olubunmi Olufunke Orekoya
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation focused on early life exposures and their impact on children and mothers’ health. It consists of three distinct studies with an overarching goal of understanding how early life factors influence health outcomes among children and mothers. The broad aims are: 1) to examine the association between maternal gestational weight gain and offspring weight at 1 year, while assessing the mediating role of birth weight; 2) to determine the association between breastfeeding practices and development of allergic conditions (eczema/skin allergy, hay fever/respiratory allergy, and asthma); and 3) to examine the association between breastfeeding and postpartum weight retention at 12 …
