Exploring The Longitudinal Associations Between Diet And Heart Failure With Preserved Ejection Fraction Among Middle-Aged Adults In The Cardia Study, Meaghan Osborne, Dragana Komnenov

Medical Student Research Symposium

There is currently limited evidence for the use of pharmacotherapies for heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). Given that diet is a key health behavior, the purpose of this study was to explore dietary predictors of HFpEF among middle-aged adults. All data were obtained from the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults study, a longitudinal cohort study. We analyzed the data from males and females (n= 2505) who had (1) completed the diet questionnaire at year(Y) 20 of follow-up and (2) undergone Doppler scan at Y30. We then classified participants as having HFpEF or not using three separate …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Heart failure (HF) leads to debilitating skeletal muscle dysfunction and atrophy, with exercise tolerance (ET) remaining a crucial indicator of clinical, practical, and mortality-based outcomes. To simulate these comorbidities, monocrotaline (MCT) is a pharmacological agent typically used to aid in replicating experimental models of right ventricle HF. PURPOSE: To investigate the viability of moderate-intensity aerobic training to preserve skeletal muscle function and ameliorate muscle atrophy in MCT-induced HF. METHODS: Thirty 8-week-old male Wistar rats were randomly divided into sedentary (SED) or trained groups (EX; 30min/day treadmill running sessions, 5 days/wk, for 4 weeks) at 60% intensity determined by a maximal …

Preventing Diabetes Through Prediabetes Screening And Treatment In Primary Care, Dewona Beal Dec 2023

Preventing Diabetes Through Prediabetes Screening And Treatment In Primary Care, Dewona Beal

Doctoral Projects

Diabetes is an epidemic in the United States. There are three types of diabetes: type 1, 2, and gestational diabetes. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is the most common type of diabetes. This type of diabetes can be prevented or delayed. In persons with T2DM, the body cannot use insulin well to keep blood glucose within normal limits. Several factors, including genetics, lifestyle such as poor diet and physical inactivity, obesity, insulin resistance, hormones, and certain medications, can cause it. A precursor to T2DM is prediabetes. Prediabetes is when blood sugar levels are elevated but not elevated enough to be …

Thomas, Lewan Parker, Andrew Maiorana, Michelle A. Keske, David Scott, Jennifer L. Reed, Jessica Tieng, Daniel Hackett, Tess Hawkins, Christopher Latella, Rachael Cordina, Derek L. Tran

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The integration of resistance training for cardiac patients leads to important health outcomes that are not optimally obtained with aerobic exercise; these include an increase in muscle mass, maintenance of bone mineral density, and improvements in muscular fitness parameters. Despite the proliferation of evidence supporting resistance exercise in recent decades, the implementation of resistance training is underutilised, and prescription is often sub-optimal in cardiac patients. This is frequently associated with safety concerns and inadequate methods of practical exercise prescription. This review discusses the potential application of cluster sets to prescribe interval resistance training in cardiac populations. The addition of planned, …

Journal of the Saudi Heart Association

Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) is a cornerstone in the secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Comprehensive cardiac rehabilitation has obtained the highest class of recommendation and the level of evidence for the treatment of patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction, after myocardial revascularization, with chronic coronary syndromes, and in patients with heart failure (HF). Comprehensive cardiac rehabilitation should be implemented as soon as possible, be multi-phasic, and adjusted to the individual needs of the patient. CR is still suboptimally used, and many cardiac centers do not have such services (2). The provision of CR services should be based on standards and …

Nanoparticle Approaches For The Renin-Angiotensin System, Sajini D. Hettiarachchi, Young M. Kwon, Yadollah Omidi, Robert C. Speth

HPD Articles

The renin-angiotensin system (RAS) is a hormonal cascade that contributes to several disorders: systemic hypertension, heart failure, kidney disease, and neurodegenerative disease. Activation of the RAS can promote inflammation and fibrosis. Drugs that target the RAS can be classified into 3 categories, AT1 angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs), angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, and renin inhibitors. The therapeutic efficacy of current RAS-inhibiting drugs is limited by poor penetration across the blood-brain barrier, low bioavailability, and to some extent, short half-lives. Nanoparticle-mediated drug delivery systems (DDSs) are possible emerging alternatives to overcome such limitations. Nanoparticles are ideally 1-100 nm in size and are …

How Can Consuming A Plant-Based Diet Reduce The Risk Of Cardiovascular Disease In Postmenopausal Women?, Rebecca Stack Apr 2023

How Can Consuming A Plant-Based Diet Reduce The Risk Of Cardiovascular Disease In Postmenopausal Women?, Rebecca Stack

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Despite the fact that women suffer higher rates of cardiovascular events after menopause, there exists a significant underrepresentation of women—especially postmenopausal women—in cardiovascular clinical trials to date. Fortunately, current evidence reveals that cardiovascular events in the general population are largely preventable through modifiable lifestyle factors, with dietary intervention being one of the most important (Amiri et al., 2022). As the impact of whole-diet interventions on cardiovascular risk factors is further explored, it has been determined that a plant-based dietary pattern may favorably influence the prevention of cardiovascular events in postmenopausal women (Barańska et al., 2021). Evidence also reveals that certain …

New Egfr Equations: Implications For Cardiologists And Racial Inequities, Nali Gillespie, Rajesh Mohandas Mar 2023

New Egfr Equations: Implications For Cardiologists And Racial Inequities, Nali Gillespie, Rajesh Mohandas

School of Medicine Faculty Publications

Recently, a new equation to predict estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) that does not include a variable for race has been endorsed by professional organizations and increasingly adopted by clinical laboratories. We discuss the reasoning behind the development of the new equation, implications for cardiologists, and how the new eGFR equation could impact disparities in the cardiovascular care of these patients. Race, a social construct, is a poor proxy for biological variability. Clinical trials which recruit underrepresented minorities and advances in genomic medicine could accelerate the development of personalized medicine and help decrease inequalities in clinical outcomes.
