Co-Distribution Of Ambient Light At Night And Incidence Of Human Cancers And Covid-19, Yidan Meng Jan 2021

Co-Distribution Of Ambient Light At Night And Incidence Of Human Cancers And Covid-19, Yidan Meng

Public Health Theses

Introduction and BackgroundThere are increasing concerns about the effects of artificial lights on human health, including hormone-related disease and immune functions. In January 2020, the outbreak of COVID-19 disrupted everyone’s life, and people who infected have various severity. Thus, we want to analyze whether people exposed to different ambient light at night (LAN) levels make them more susceptible to COVID-19 for our summer research. Besides the effects of LAN on immune functions, we also discussed the association of LAN and multiple cancers in seven states of Northeastern U.S. We used similar statistical and geographic analysis methods and separate them into …

Impact Of A 6-Month Exercise Intervention On Cognitive Function Among Ovarian Cancer Survivors: The Women’S Activity And Lifestyle Study In Connecticut (Walc), Jonica Yu Kao Jan 2020

Impact Of A 6-Month Exercise Intervention On Cognitive Function Among Ovarian Cancer Survivors: The Women’S Activity And Lifestyle Study In Connecticut (Walc), Jonica Yu Kao

Public Health Theses

Purpose: Cancer survivors often exhibit symptoms of impaired cognitive abilities after chemotherapy treatment. Physical activity has been shown to be promising in improving cognitive function among survivors for various types of cancer. However, very few studies have addressed this concern among the ovarian cancer patient population specifically.

Methods: The study randomized 111 physically-inactive ovarian cancer survivors into a 6-month exercise intervention (n=59) or an attention-control group (n=52). The FACT-Cog scale was self-reported to understand survivor perceptions of cognitive abilities at baseline and at 6 months. Generalized linear models (GLMs) were executed to examine the effect of the intervention versus attention-control …

Nut And Peanut Butter Consumption And Risk Of Prostate Cancer In The Nih-Aarp Diet And Health Study, Mimi (Trucmai) Nu Ton Jan 2019

Nut And Peanut Butter Consumption And Risk Of Prostate Cancer In The Nih-Aarp Diet And Health Study, Mimi (Trucmai) Nu Ton

Public Health Theses

Background: While nuts and their related nutrients have been inversely associated with some cancers, the association between nut consumption and prostate cancer has been inconsistent.

Methods: We conducted an analysis of the association between nut and peanut butter consumption and risk of incident prostate cancer among 173,243 men in the prospective NIH-AARP Diet and Health Study. There was a total of 18,619 incident prostate cancer cases during the 16 years of follow-up. We calculated hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) using Cox proportional hazards regression for intake of nuts, peanut butter, and total nuts (nuts plus peanut butter), …

Steps To Evaluate The Emory Breast Center Cancer Education Class, Jillian B. Ogden Dec 2011

Steps To Evaluate The Emory Breast Center Cancer Education Class, Jillian B. Ogden

Public Health Theses

Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) data estimates that 207,090 women will be diagnosed with and 39,840 women will die of cancer of the breast in 2011. Cancer can be a very intimidating illness and cause a great deal of anxiety. This anxiety can sometimes progress into a very serious medical problem. Interpersonal relationships, such as that between a patient and provider can influence health behavior. Communication functions of patient-provider communication such as, information exchange, uncertainty management, can improve health outcomes both directly and indirectly. For example, cancer education can help ease anxiety by familiarizing the patient with their particular …

Urban Versus Rural Patterns Of Mammography Use: An Analysis Of Two Southeastern States, Valerie Miranda Bycott Oct 2007

Urban Versus Rural Patterns Of Mammography Use: An Analysis Of Two Southeastern States, Valerie Miranda Bycott

Public Health Theses

Mammography is widely recognized as the best method to detect breast cancer. This study examined the screening rate differences among women who live in urban and rural counties in Georgia and North Carolina. Data on the mammography screening rates was obtained from the Behavior Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) for 2002 and 2004. To assess the availability of mammography facilities, data was obtained from the Mammography Facility Database provided by the FDA. Multivariate logistic regression showed that having a usual source of care in urban counties was a positive predictor of women 40-59 years of age getting screened in both …
