Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are noncoding RNA molecules with a heterogeneous structure consisting of 200 or more nucleotides. Because these noncoding RNAs are transcribed by RNA polymerase II, they have properties similar to messenger RNA (mRNA). Contrary to popular belief, the term "ncRNA" originated before the discovery of microRNAs. LncRNA genes are more numerous than protein-coding genes. Background/aim: Posttraumatic growth (PTG) is defined as positive psychological changes following a challenging or traumatic life event. The purpose of this study is to define the predictors of PTG and death anxiety (DAN) in caregivers of cancer patients and evaluate the impact of DAN on PTG.Materials and methods: The caregivers of cancer patients were evaluated using structured questionnaires, including a validated PTG scale and Templer death anxiety scale.Results: In 3 different cancer centers, 426 participants were evaluated. Background/aim: This study aimed to investigate the effect of chemoradiotherapy (CRT) on interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), which are critical markers of the clinical radiation response of patients with locally advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). Materials and methods: Thirty patients who were treated with CRT and 20 healthy controls were prospectively evaluated. Circulating levels of cytokines were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay procedure. Post-CRT and pre-CRT levels were compared. Background/aim: Cancer patients frequently need intensive care support due to respiratory failure. We aimed to evaluate the predictors of mortality in cancer patients who were admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). Materials and methods: This study was performed in the ICUs of two centers between 1 January 2008 and 31 December 2015. Demographic data, cancer type, causes of respiratory failure, comorbidities, APACHE II scores, treatments, and mortality rates were recorded. In this prospective study, we aimed to assess the perioperative use of enteral immunonutrition in patients undergoing radical gastrointestinal surgery for malignancy. Background/aim: To determine the prevalence of malignancy in thyroid incidentalomas (TIs) detected by fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT). Materials and methods: 18F-FDG PET/CT images were evaluated prospectively for the presence of thyroid uptake. The patients with a TI were evaluated by an endocrinologist according to the predefined diagnostic algorithm. The final diagnosis was obtained clinically and/or by pathology. Results: TI was detected in 4.2% of 4204 patients. A malignant thyroid nodule was diagnosed in 29% and 33% of the focal and diffuse-focal uptake groups, respectively. Background/aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the antiproliferative and cytotoxic effects of a newly synthesized molecule named paracetamol acetohydroxamic acid (PaCaHa) on human neoplastic cell lines. Materials and methods: A549, CRL 2923, HeLa, and ARPE were treated with various concentrations of PaCaHa and DMSO (vehicle control). The cytotoxic/cytostatic effects of PaCaHa were determined after a 24-h incubation period and compared to the DMSO control. Oxaliplatin is an effective and widely used chemotherapeutic agent in the treatment of many solid tumors. The most common side effects are peripheral neuropathy, gastrointestinal toxicity, and neutropenia. There have been some case reports about ototoxicity with oxaliplatin, but no clinical trials. In this trial, we explored whether or not oxaliplatin has ototoxic effects.
