Teaching And Assessment Of Clinical Diagnostic Reasoning In Medical Students, Lucy Gilkes, Narelle Kealley, Jacqueline Frayne
Medical Papers and Journal Articles
Background: Teaching diagnostic reasoning and giving feedback has an important role in medical education. Clinicians who teach may recognise errors, but be unfamiliar with the terminology used to describe them, leading to a lack of consistent and useful student feedback.
Objective: This prospective project evaluation study aimed to develop an examiner training package regarding errors in diagnostic reasoning, utilising consistent language and feedback tool, and report on diagnostic reasoning errors in second year medical students over the transition from preclinical to early clinical training at objective structured clinical exams (OSCEs).
Results: Likert questionnaire regarding examining, assessment and feedback pre- and …

Exploring Assessment Of Medical Students' Competencies In Pain Medicine - A Review, Elspeth Shipton, Carole Steketee, Frank Bate, Eric J. Visser
Medical Papers and Journal Articles
Introduction: Considering the continuing high prevalence and public health burden of pain, it is critical that medical students are equipped with competencies in the field of pain medicine. Robust assessment of student expertise is integral for effective implementation of competency-based medical education.
Objective: The aim of this review was to describe the literature regarding methods for assessing pain medicine competencies in medical students.
Method: PubMed, Medline, EMBASE, ERIC, and Google Scholar, and BEME data bases were searched for empirical studies primarily focusing on assessment of any domain of pain medicine competencies in medical students published between January 1997 and December …

Background: Standard setting of assessment is critical in quality assurance of medical programs. The aims of this study were to identify and compare the impact of methods used to establish the passing standard by the 13 medical schools who participated in the 2014 Australian Medical Schools Assessment Collaboration (AMSAC).
Methods: A survey was conducted to identify the standard setting procedures used by participating schools. Schools standard setting data was collated for the 49 multiple choice items used for benchmarking by AMSAC in 2014. Analyses were conducted for nine schools by their method of standard setting and key characteristics of 28 …
Using The Script Concordance Test To Assess Clinical Reasoning Skills In Undergraduate And Postgraduate Medicine, Michael Wan
Using The Script Concordance Test To Assess Clinical Reasoning Skills In Undergraduate And Postgraduate Medicine, Michael Wan
Medical Papers and Journal Articles
The script concordance test is a relatively new format of written assessment that is used to assess higher order clinical reasoning and data interpretation skills in medicine. Candidates are presented with a clinical scenario, followed by the reveal of a new piece of information. The candidates are then asked to assess whether this additional information increases or decreases the probability or likelihood of a particular diagnostic, investigative, or management decision. To score these questions, the candidate’s decision in each question is compared with that of a reference panel of expert clinicians. This review focuses on the development of quality script …

Improving Allied Health Professionals' Research Implementation Behaviours For Children With Cerebral Palsy: Protocol For A Before-After Study, Christine Imms, Iona Novak, Claire Kerr, Nora Shields, Melinda Randall, Adrienne Harvey, H Kerr Graham, Dinah Reddihough
Medical Papers and Journal Articles
Background: Cerebral palsy is a permanent disorder of posture and movement caused by disturbances in the developing brain. It affects approximately 1 in every 500 children in developed countries and is the most common form of childhood physical disability. People with cerebral palsy may also have problems with speech, vision and hearing, intellectual difficulties and epilepsy. Health and therapy services are frequently required throughout life, and this care should be effective and evidence informed; however, accessing and adopting new research findings into day-to-day clinical practice is often delayed.
Methods/Design: This 3-year study employs a before and after design to evaluate …

Rating General Practitioner Consultation Performance In Cancer Care: Does The Specialty Of Assessors Matter? A Simulated Patient Study, M Jiwa, G Halkett, X Meng, M Berg
Medical Papers and Journal Articles
Background: Patients treated for prostate cancer may present to general practitioners (GPs) for treatment follow up, but may be reticent to have their consultations recorded. Therefore the use of simulated patients allows practitioner consultations to be rated. The aim of this study was to determine whether the speciality of the assessor has an impact on how GP consultation performance is rated.
Methods: Six pairs of scenarios were developed for professional actors in two series of consultations by GPs. The scenarios included: chronic radiation proctitis, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) ‘bounce’, recurrence of cancer, urethral stricture, erectile dysfunction and depression or anxiety. …
